This takes me back to when I was a little girl in the late fifties early sixties. Then little girls and women wore Pixie hoods and little boys and men wore balaclavas . Look for old patterns. I’ve got some from the thirties , forties and fifties. I bless my mum and grandma for keeping their patterns love watching your videos ❤
Hi Tayler 😊 "balaclava" is the name of this type of hood here in Norway, it was very popular between the young girls during winter, usually the yarn used is the chunky and squichy type, with thick needles. I think of a balaclava as just more tight/form fitting than a hood. It hugs the head and face rather than being more slouchy. I also agree that a balaclava could provide more covering on the face, for example only showing the top half of the face or just the eyes - a ski mask if you will.
It is quite normal in Scandinavia (I'm Danish) for kids to have hoods - often the part that sits around your neck is ribbed, so it keeps the wind out. Esp. in kindergarden it isn't allowed to have ties on hats, but also, having the hat and the cowl together means that dropping/loosing etc. hats is less likely - and it has fewer gaps between garments (without the bulk of a sweater). It makes layering easier. And mind you Denmark is the warmest of the Scandinavian coutries.
Oh also - my son (17yo) has a hood, in fleece - that he bought years ago: It is *actually a cowl with a hood sown onto it - so there is basicaly a cowl underneath the hood the he can pull up overh is nose (with a drawstring), while not drawing the hood closed. I really like the way it looks.
I'd just like to chime in as someone who loves history.... When you first said snood I immediately thought of snoods that women used in history to keep their hair tidy 🤣
Last year, I Tunisian crocheted a "hooded viking cowl" from an Etsy pattern. I get so many compliments! It's more hefty than this type. I definitely recommend making something like this. It keeps you much warmer, works with most hair styles, and looks classy.
You really give so much inspiration! I never would have thought about knitting a hood, but I see the use of it. Good for neck warming, but also putting over your head to protect from wind and cold without developing "hat head". Thanks for sharing these great pattern ideas! I can't wait to see how yours comes out.

Are you my fairy-"knit" mother???? This is the third time you have created a video after I've shown interest in a certain project or technique! first it was German short rows, then socks, now it's hoods! I think you know what's best for me in terms of knitting at this point 😂
Really enjoyed this video. I made the Flashback Hoodie for my daughter for Christmas and it turned out great. The neck/cowl part is done (almost) last so you can adjust the length (or probably gauge too with slightly larger kneedles to make a looser 1x1 rib). I used worsted Woolfolk Far combined with a strand of lace alpaca for extra softness and the fabric it made was divine. I am planning to make another one for myself in the fall!
I love hoods. I don't have winter coat anymore (and I live in Maine). I have very thick poncho with a separate hood that has a cowl to cover anything showing from neckline of the poncho when it's really cold. It's my favorite way to dress for the cold weather.
I just recently did the same search. Planning to knit a hood for travel to the Faroe islands where its can be cold, rainy, and windy. I love using scarfs as improvised hoods when traveling but I think this trip merits one specifically!
I've made the Friends of the Forrest hood and absolutely love it! I made it in a wool/alpaca/silk blend because I live in Michigan and need as much warm as I can get in the Winter. It worked almost too well because I often have to pull the hood back before I get to the bus stop 3 blocks away.
These last two posts are so well-timed. I was just talking with a friend about how I don't really like hats on me and she asked why don't I knit up a hood? I had truly never thought about it. It sounded great and then you pop up with this!! 😂😂😂😂 This post really helped me to consolidate what I was really wanting. Thanks so much!!
I have just started the LENU hood with just SS instead of the ribbed neck portion. I had what I needed and want it for Spring College Softball and Football games in the late Fall. Always windy so this will be great even while wearing a baseball cap :)

I went through this years ago when I tried to replicate a commercial hood/scarf combo I loved. I wore it ALL THE TIME when I lived in the Bay Area. I was unsuccessful mostly because I didn’t find a lightweight enough yarn that also allowed the hood to also stand up on its own. 🥹. I Enjoyed hearing your thoughts on this less common accessory. FYI A few years ago I made the Newbury Cowl (really a hood) from Third Piece which is lovely, and I recently added some fingerless knits out of the same chunky yarn. It’s way too heavy for NV, doesn’t meet your criteria, but I do recommend it for those who want a really stellar “third piece” accessory.
I went through this exact rabbit hole last year. I still haven't knit it 😂 In my research I narrow my taste to a long cowl with minimum shaping (if any) for the hood and with a split on one side for good fitting. No actual hood visible, I'd rather had a long tube that has the option to become a hood. I don't usually like cowls because I feel like I'm wearing an orthopedic collar that makes my neck toasty but doesn't cover my chest. With one slit I'll ease the gathering in the neck and transfer some of the fabric to the chest. I also imagined a loose and flowy fabric that can be worn comfortably all on the neck (and some on the chest) or to lift it up and have a hood as well. I discarded the actual hood hanging in the back because in that area of my body I get very hot very easily, specially during my commutes in winter. So I'm going to knit a long tube with a side slit in a lightweight but cozy fabric 😅 I'm still searching for the perfect yarn. In that note, I'm knitting a scarf WITH A HOOD ATTACHED for my bf. I'm all over the hood matter! This video has arrived at the perfect time for me!

So when I do this, what I see is not a hood, but rather a ski mask with a small opening for the nose, eyes, and mouth. Not my idea of a hood. However this is just one perspective. I’m realizing that hoods (like the ones I’m sharing here) are referred to as balaclavas is some countries. Just not in America, as far as I know.

Still looking for the perfect hood for myself, I like the drapey light ones. But also ride a bike every day and want to have it stay on my head and protect me from some light rain. I have long curly hair and like to have a hat most of the time throughout winter. I then like to wear something on my head in the summer as I am in the sun quite a bit. My problem is hat head! I am now wondering if this might be a good solution. I like the one you purchase for its' simplicity and drape. I feel like it looks feminine and graceful and not hair crushing. I am just not sure about its' warmth as it is not close to the head. I guess that is the compromise if I do not want to crush my curls and have a flat head.
I suffer from hat-head too! With regard to your comment re “not close fitting”, my experience is that it creates a layer of warm air around the body, much like how a long, voluminous skirt traps body heat, and is warmer than tight fitting trousers. Anyway, just try it out and see what works for you. 👍🦋

About twenty years ago when i didn't know better i washed a large wool hood that was meant to be felted and it felted in patches for God knows why. I still don't know what to do with it.
SOOOOO I can completely see this happening, however the one I'm wearing here doesn't do that fortunately. I feel like this will really depend on the overall weight and particularly why I want my hand-knit hood to be lightweight. Great question!

Yes. A snood is not a hood. I mention this here in the video when I share the distinctions between a hood, a snood, and a hooded scarf. However, the snood, similar to the balaclava, has evolved in its use and design. What we may consider a large cowl is now considered a snood in many circles.
It’s interesting bc I knit the Harris hood and it wasn’t nearly as big for me as the pictures and I was on gauge. I had to rework the pattern for size and shaping for the head to get it to look how I wanted. 🧶

It’s interesting bc I knit the Harris hood and it wasn’t nearly as big for me as the pictures and I was on gauge. I had to rework the pattern for size and shaping for the head to get it to look how I wanted. 🧶
