    11:18 after emperess dowager says the schemer will take Ruyis' punishment instead, Ruyi looks to her servant. As she turns her face back forward, there is the slightest smile. She got a kick out of showing that snake her power! Ruyi is so graceful!

    I actually began to like the empress dowager after this. She cud have played along and punished Ruyi. I think she started to respect Ruyi during the first episode wen she made her choose between her aunt and herself. She saw the way Ruyi handled the entire situation of her aunt’s death and was secretly impressed too. I believe after Ruyi saved her she developed an even higher level of respect for Ruyi She’s actually a complex character. Her development as the show went on was quite interesting too.

    How Imperial Concubine Ji "helped" Ruyi by intentionally saying that if it wasnt for Ruyi that she'd (Emp.Dow) would be dead by her knife right now thus helping Ruyi get in the good graces of the Empress Dowager & closer to getting out the cold palace

      Right! This woman has only served you loyally for decades in many trivial and major ways. Fujia literally used all her strength to block a knife attack and throw Dowager Imperial Concubine Ji away, but can’t even get a nod of acknowledgment or thanks. She only gets another chore to ensure punishment is carried out. What does a servant got to do to get a “thank you” from the Royal Family!?

    For any who are going "huh? but.... they burn paper..."
    I found the rules on burning paper a bit odd and contradictory on my first viewing of this series. It was actually this scene that it made sense and looking up burning paper money ritual helped.
    Paper money is burned for the soul they are praying for, to help ease their journey in the afterlife.
    Prayers and sutras are copied and burned, the smoke carrying the prayers to heaven.
    In the 1700's many countries had elaborate burial rituals and were very superstitious.

We purchased a home, cars, furniture and stuff for a home and burned it all, along with enough gold & silver paper folded into ingots for our folks to have everything they could possibly want in the next life. • @opheliamaples
      @opheliamaples 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      It's because the Empress Fuca Langhua feels inferior to Ruyi and her insecurities makes her dislike Ruyi and be wary of her. At Hongli's bridal-selection ceremony, he chose Ruyi to be his main wife. Before Ruyi showed up, he was being pressured to choose Fuca Langhua and was obviously reluctant to do so. She almost had the sceptre (I think it's called a ruyi) in her hands when Hongli snatched it away to give to Ruyi when she arrived. She knew that Ruyi was Hongli's personal choice for main wife and that she got the position only because he was pressured to settle on her when his choice of Ruyi was objected to by his father. Then Hongli still wanted Ruyi so much that he pleaded with his father to have Ruyi as his second wife.
      So Fuca Langhua feels insecure in her position knowing that her husband really wanted Ruyi and not her. She tries to be his perfect empress in order to please her husband and validate herself but remains feeling like she's only playing second fiddle to Ruyi because of the emperor's fickle and aloof nature. That's why she gives Consort Hui and Ruyi those infertility-causing bracelets because their children will be the biggest threats to hers - Consort Hui's because of her family's power and Ruyi's because of the emperor's affections.

      @@opheliamaples She also fears constantly that Ruyi is scheming against her to take her position and harm her since she knows the Emperor truly has love for her and only sees herself as basically a trophy wife. Her insecurities and duty to her clan over all else forced her to constantly be on the offensive against Ruyi because she could not afford any losses, that's why when they did occur, she blamed Ruyi for everything that happened in her life, such as the deaths of her children which she was not involved in whatsoever.

      I think a lot of it also has to do with her, Ruyi, being related to the last Empress, Ula Nara Clan. So glad I wasn't alive then, I believe I would have run AMOK!!!

Many will say as long you're wearing it as part of a cultural exploration or education, you shouldnt have to be hesitant.. Whereas some will say, you simply shouldn't wear them because they're sacred, imperial clothing.. I'm just going to tell you that if you insist... to proceed with caution. Have a wonderful day.
