Lyrics: [Intro] Oh, my baby, baby I love you more than I can tell I don't think I can live without you And I know that I never will Oh, my baby, baby I want you so it scares me to death I can't say anymore than "I love you" Everything else is a waste of breath [Verse 1] I want you You've had your fun, you don't get well no more I want you Your fingernails go dragging down the wall Be careful, darling, you might fall [Verse 2] I want you I woke up, and one of us was crying I want you You said, "young man, I do believe you're dying" I want you If you need a second opinion as you seem to do these days I want you You can look in my eyes and you can count the ways [Verse 3] I want you Did you mean to tell me but seem to forget? I want you Since when were you so generous and inarticulate? I want you It's the stupid details that my heart is breaking for It's the way your shoulders shake and what they're shaking for I want you It's knowing that he knows you now after only guessing It's the thought of him undressing you or you undressing [Verse 4] I want you He tossed some tatty compliment your way I want you And you were fool enough to love it when he said "I want you" [Verse 5] I want you The truth can't hurt you, it's just like the dark It scares you witless, but in time you see things clear and stark I want you Go on and hurt me, then we'll let it drop I want you I'm afraid I won't know where to stop I want you I'm not ashamed to say I cried for you I want you I want to know the things you did that we do too I want you I want to hear he pleases you more than I do I want you I might as well be useless for all it means to you I want you Did you call his name out as he held you down? I want you Oh no, my darling, not with that clown I want you [Verse 6] I want you You've had your fun, you don't get well no more I want you No-one who wants you could want you more [Outro] I want you I want you I want you Every night when I go off to bed and when I wake up I want you I'm going to say it once again till I instil it I know I'm going, going, to feel this way until you kill it I want you I want you I want you
F I N A L L Y in HD!! It's been one of my favourite vocal/delivery performances ever for years. But always in that crappy quality that's been online... I've played it in the studio to many singers I've produced and wanted to throw some inspiration their way. And absolute stunner of performance. A prime example of a singer making a song her own. Elvis who?... :-) :-) Love to you both. He's killing it on the guitar and the band is feeling you perfectly.
When I first heard this song in the 80s it stopped me in my tracks and I had to rewind the tape (damn I’m old) and listen to it 3 more times. I missed the bus to school that day. It really hit all the feels. Haven’t heard it in years and you know what? It still does . And when I wake up…..
This was a terrifying song when Elvis did it. Fiona Apple turns it into a full-length horror film then jams it so tightly into 7 minutes that it screams.
It feels wrong to me when people treat her heartfelt performances as regular entertainment. They cheer when they should be silent, and they clap when they should weep.
Listen to anything she shares live is best n she means is bet your ass cause she's feeling it for the collective and it's got the power of all who feel whatever way she's speaking for me n him n her n us it's power n beautiful. She's been the one my fight my run my cry my intensity she's shared all my stuff with me since I was a teenager n I'm 48
You can see that look on her face when the words end, and then again at the very end, when she's trying to come down again, wiping her eyes, it took something from her. Wow.
Elvis Costello said the same thing - that this was the best version of a song he wrote ever, and that it was difficult for him to hold his crying during this performance.
The real anger, hatred, passion and feeling that Fiona Apple sings this with is absolutely incredible. It's just a perfect performance. I've no idea how many times I've just sat and watched this.
This is one of the most powerful live vocal performances I've ever heard. It's both difficult to watch, and memorizing at the same time. Passion like that comes from a dark place, but holy shit does it make good art.
I find myself asking _'How much more purple/magenta could this show be?'_ and the answer is _"none, none more purple"_ - purple lights, purple stage, purple dress, purple eye shadow...
I’m glad Elvis does such a brilliant job accompanying her on the guitar here, because in general FA tends to make me forget that there are any other musicians, and that’s not good.
They say that when you fall in love with a song, you remember everything about the environment you were in as you first heard it. That holds true with this performance of I Want You. For the previous three months, I've had it on a constant loop. The only time I stepped away was to branch deeper into both Elvis Costello and Fiona Apple. In the last week alone, I have purchased the 45 of Costello's version, discovered Fiona's first two, BRILLIANT, albums, and crossed paths with a few additional Costello songs. I am mesmerized. This song has truly become my home.
On the 3-year anniversary of my discovery of this performance, I'm returning to express gratitude. For a fleeting moment, I could sing with the same raw emotion heard through Fiona. That passion is gone now, but it's okay, as the song has changed my life. It brought me to New York for the greatest vacation of my life, it led me to purchase my very own Jazzmaster, and most importantly it has provided me with closure. It seems I played it too many times to the point in which I hardly feel anymore. The first time I heard this song, I was in my father's Z4, with the top down on a sunny autumn afternoon. I was going to buy my own Z4 a year later, but instead I opted to hear a 13-minute live rendition of Costello playing this song. That was the greatest sacrifice I've ever made. Not a day goes by where I don't daydream of the opportunity to hear him play it again. However, I fear if I do, giving up my dream car would have been worthless. On my way home from work today, I plan to listen to all 7 of my favorite versions of the song. Then, at home I plan to play the 45 on vinyl. It's been lovely reading our shared love for Costello's songwriting. See you next time :)
This is not just the most beautiful and impactful video/song/performance I've ever seen, it's a transcendental experience. The moment at 6:32 always takes my breath away; a dazed Fiona comes back into her body, bringing us back to earth with her.
Nobody else in the universe could play that guitar accompaniment to such a disturbed but brilliant piece sung by the only person in the universe who could truly bring it to such a shocking but fragile form of life.
**a stunning, artistic, emotionally raw, improvisational tour de force, rarely (if ever) equalled** Note at the very end how Costello keeps watching Fiona, softly playing, vainly attempting to coax her into singing that final "I Want You." And... no matter how many times you watch this, she's not going to do it! Fiona's refusal comes as the result of a gut-wrenching performance that finally enables her to exorcise the angry obsession she's had with a lover who cheated. Fiona stands defiantly -- staring straight ahead --she no longer wants him. And though the song has no resolution (all the band can do is play the final chord) Fiona Apple, herself, most certainly finds resolution! And yeah, I know Fiona was only singing Elvis' lyrics, but no one will able to convince me that she hasn't lived that pain at some point in her life.
Elvis Costello is a rock God. And Fiona, well, lets just say I'm a fan. This joint venture with Fiona when she was super popular was a marketing play by VH1 for ratings. No shame in that, they knew who and what was hot at the time, but its always a gamble to put two hot acts together and expect chemistry. Neither artist needed to do this, but the result was an incredible collaboration that resulted in three gut-wrenching, rip your heart out songs that will stand the test of time as some of the best rock ever made. I come back to it from time to time because the passion is unparalleled, not just from Fiona, but from Elvis and his band knowing where to let her go and where to rip.
Take a dream and a nightmare and knit them perfectly together and this is what you get! I've loved this song since '86/'87 and yet I only heard this version today. Such emotional intensity that she looks exhausted at the end and she really gets under my skin 5 times in a row now...
This is an awe inspiring cover indeed. The raw emotion is incredible. If you enjoyed this I highly recommend (from this same set!) watching Elvis Costello sing one of Fiona's songs "I know". I think Fiona is a timeless talent and largely underrated... so it's very satisfying to see a legend like Elvis take one of her songs and point out he's covering it because of how great it is (he says this). He has great reverence for her.
For as long as it lasts (and often a while afterwards) this performance takes from me my ability to breathe in all but the tiniest shuddering snatches. I can't consume it passively, deriving some sufficient level of emotional catharsis and then moving on, as I'm used to doing. I feel something extracted from myself in return. Or so it feels to me sometimes. I can't count how many times I've watched this over the years or how many people I have shown it to and what it has meant to me. Thanks Fiona & co.
this is fiona apple gold! 5:53 the way she sings "and when i wake up" ! i remember when i found this song years ago it was like finding some long lost song i didnt know about and it was and still is the greatest thing. shes so perfect for this song. i wasnt even familiar with the original but i figured she blew it out of the water. and its true.
I never heard this before. What a great collaboration! It is like EC added just enough spice...the kind of spice that pops at the right moment, but doesn't take over...just enough to think, "oh shit" for a split second. Good stuff!!!
I listen to this song over and over and over again at least once a month and just sob from love and sadness and appreciation and grief and oh my god I hope Fiona knows what she means to all of us 🥺♥️😭
Found this video last friday, have been playing it on repeat since. Thank you Fiona for giving your whole soul in this performance but also, in everything you do. Thank you Simon as always for uploading and being a conduit to our favorite artist.
I have watched the fuzzy version of this on another channel so many times, so many. It's the first FA performance I ever heard or watched. I don't feel emotions very much, but this performance helped me feel things I could not before. (And listening to Hot Knife for 48 hours straight helped me hear music, too.) Thanks for getting this on your channel!
My first love, I see her everywhere, and its been so many years... she carries a piece of my heart and soul. She lives in my head, my dreams... She played me this song and meant every word, then I was a clueless neanderthal. Love.
I was deeply in love when I heard this in '87. Because of my impossible behaviour the object of my love (who was briefly also in love with me) never wanted to see me again. For three years it left me in what I now recognise as a state of deep, paralysing depression. This was my soundtrack, and it still chills me to the bone. Beautiful. Horrible.
From a Johnny Uppal to a Fiona Apple - From a whisper to a scream and being a "get happy" in 2022 with a Boy called if tour in Birmingham and meeting Elvis Costello in Nottingham just before his suspected Cancer diagnosis .. and his one day at a time battle with John Barleycorn aka Alcoholism .. Thank You .
Lyrics:
[Intro]
Oh, my baby, baby
I love you more than I can tell
I don't think I can live without you
And I know that I never will
Oh, my baby, baby
I want you so it scares me to death
I can't say anymore than "I love you"
Everything else is a waste of breath
[Verse 1]
I want you
You've had your fun, you don't get well no more
I want you
Your fingernails go dragging down the wall
Be careful, darling, you might fall
[Verse 2]
I want you
I woke up, and one of us was crying
I want you
You said, "young man, I do believe you're dying"
I want you
If you need a second opinion as you seem to do these days
I want you
You can look in my eyes and you can count the ways
[Verse 3]
I want you
Did you mean to tell me but seem to forget?
I want you
Since when were you so generous and inarticulate?
I want you
It's the stupid details that my heart is breaking for
It's the way your shoulders shake and what they're shaking for
I want you
It's knowing that he knows you now after only guessing
It's the thought of him undressing you or you undressing
[Verse 4]
I want you
He tossed some tatty compliment your way
I want you
And you were fool enough to love it when he said
"I want you"
[Verse 5]
I want you
The truth can't hurt you, it's just like the dark
It scares you witless, but in time you see things clear and stark
I want you
Go on and hurt me, then we'll let it drop
I want you
I'm afraid I won't know where to stop
I want you
I'm not ashamed to say I cried for you
I want you
I want to know the things you did that we do too
I want you
I want to hear he pleases you more than I do
I want you
I might as well be useless for all it means to you
I want you
Did you call his name out as he held you down?
I want you
Oh no, my darling, not with that clown
I want you
[Verse 6]
I want you
You've had your fun, you don't get well no more
I want you
No-one who wants you could want you more
[Outro]
I want you
I want you
I want you
Every night when I go off to bed and when I wake up
I want you
I'm going to say it once again till I instil it
I know I'm going, going, to feel this way until you kill it
I want you
I want you
I want you
if only all could be all everywhere and always
*Brilliant.* 🎙️
F I N A L L Y in HD!!
It's been one of my favourite vocal/delivery performances ever for years. But always in that crappy quality that's been online...
I've played it in the studio to many singers I've produced and wanted to throw some inspiration their way.
And absolute stunner of performance.
A prime example of a singer making a song her own. Elvis who?... :-) :-) Love to you both. He's killing it on the guitar and the band is feeling you perfectly.
incredibile e meravigliosa versione
When I first heard this song in the 80s it stopped me in my tracks and I had to rewind the tape (damn I’m old) and listen to it 3 more times. I missed the bus to school that day. It really hit all the feels. Haven’t heard it in years and you know what? It still does . And when I wake up…..

Agreed
Fact. All I could do watching this was wish the audience would stfu and just absorb that moment of brilliance. Too good.
К сожалению мы не можем навязать людям, как правильно чувствовать.
She’s not singing this. She’s FEELING it. There’s a passion bordering on rage. Whoever made her feel like this, may karma have mercy on him.
Paul Thomas Anderson
He he he I s’pose you’re right 😬🤓😬
You can see that look on her face when the words end, and then again at the very end, when she's trying to come down again, wiping her eyes, it took something from her. Wow.
One day, people will say this about me
I think this is the single best cover of any song I have ever heard.
Same here.
I wish I could add more likes every time I come back to this.
This is literally the best live performance of a cover song or live performance in general EVER… IMO. It gives me chills. Just brilliant!
It’s like she’s not “singing” it, but rather that she’s FEELING it, huh?
Fiona plus Elvis Costello isn’t a pairing I thought that I wanted, but afterwards, I realized that it was needed. Two of the GOATs here…
Correct
word
Elvis Costello said the same thing - that this was the best version of a song he wrote ever, and that it was difficult for him to hold his crying during this performance.
The real anger, hatred, passion and feeling that Fiona Apple sings this with is absolutely incredible. It's just a perfect performance. I've no idea how many times I've just sat and watched this.
This performance did not deserve applause. It should have received absolute silence, to let it sink in and time for contemplation. Love this.
I totally agree ……………
I love Elvis Costello... but I don't know if this is even his song anymore... That was incredible!
My favorite terrifying and brilliant vocal performance of all time
This is one of the most powerful live vocal performances I've ever heard. It's both difficult to watch, and memorizing at the same time. Passion like that comes from a dark place, but holy shit does it make good art.
The definitive version of this song for sure
I find myself asking _'How much more purple/magenta could this show be?'_ and the answer is _"none, none more purple"_ - purple lights, purple stage, purple dress, purple eye shadow...
Red red red...
I write songs, love
Your eyes even look purple
Are you Fiona?
no
I’m glad Elvis does such a brilliant job accompanying her on the guitar here, because in general FA tends to make me forget that there are any other musicians, and that’s not good.

Update: heard Costello play this live in New York City on February 22nd, 2023. Best live music experience of my life.
Why wouldn't you buy all her 5 albums? as they are all brilliant
On the 3-year anniversary of my discovery of this performance, I'm returning to express gratitude. For a fleeting moment, I could sing with the same raw emotion heard through Fiona. Feels weird to watch video of this with actual pixels
"Holy shit! She sings this song much better than me!"Thought Elvis Costello.😉
And he admitted at himself
Such a haunting performance. I love the original song, but she adds something else. Perfection 👌
Literally the best performance I’ve ever seen.

Good observation, this is how Elvis typically ends the song: th-cam.com/video/VGZC2h5VVA8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=BVBeXQdbClDDnKms&t=435

I’ve watched this hundreds of times over the years and it gets better every time.
Her eyes have a language of their own
Probably one of the greatest rock live songs of the last century.
I can't describe the feelings I get when I listen to this song.. It's been on the loop for two straight days!
This performance has haunted my soul in the most beautiful of ways for so many years. 🖤
fucking same. I keep coming back to it every so many years.
Take a dream and a nightmare and knit them perfectly together and this is what you get!

talent finds talent.
Wow. You can just feel pure emotion in her voice.
Top 5 covers all time
She is such a unique musician and person. Her passion in her performances is unparalleled
Holy shit, this version of the song is so good!
An iconic performance
yearly comment. This is the best ayone has ever done a cover live ever. This Fucking woman

She is a treasure. I want to give her a hug.
I would have lost it in the crowd. I come back to this performance over and over
This is the best cover iv ever heard of any song... Wow
What a fabulous version of that song and Fiona is so beautiful
Absolute true artist who holds her craft to the highest degree.
God I love this. I saw it when it originally aired, and as a fan of both EC and Fiona, it always stuck with me. I’m so glad to see it again.
@2:06 …… watch Elvis draw her in. Those power chords. The directness of it. It screams ….. lady, let’s GO. Cmon.
THE PASSION
Finally you all made this HD
I love Elvis' version, it's my favorite dark love songs! Her cadence mimics, if not, makes it that much more emotional! Nailed it
So happy to see a high fidelity upload of this! Such an incredible performance.
One of the greatest performances of all time.
I remember watching this live on the tv, was blown away then & blown away now
I 😍😍😍😍 this version of this song.
5:52 - She's literally shaking, this was more than just an emotional performance. This was personal.
this performance is haunting fiona doing it once again
This is easily one of my favorite performances ever. Es tan desgarrador y bonito que no hay manera de no sentir cada una de las palabras que canta
I listen to this song over and over and over again at least once a month and just sob from love and sadness and appreciation and grief and oh my god I hope Fiona knows what she means to all of us 🥺♥️😭
Absolutely incredible! Chills.
Hot Knife is so good!
hey its weird seeing you on a random video (I am subscribed to you)
Wow....... unbelievable. This is fantastic
Two phenomenal artist ❤️ Costello is such a great song writer

Omg I'm here so early. Fiona is simply the best 😌
My first love, I see her everywhere, and its been so many years... she carries a piece of my heart and soul. She lives in my head, my dreams... She played me this song and meant every word, then I was a clueless neanderthal. Love.
Oh yes. I’ve watched the fuzzy one so much. This will be such a treat!!!! Thank you 😊
So great, magnetic, theatrical and mesmerizing performance!!
wow what a performance from everyone
Holy moly. Goodness. Goodness.
I love this so much.
I can’t believe one of my favourite artists is covering one of my favourite songs from one of my favourite artists
I have been waiting for over a decade for a high quality version of this performance. Thank you.
Beautiful. Horrible.
and it was the soundtrack to my own heartache in '21. Funny how music's impact is unchanged over decades
This is gorgeous... everything.
Thank You .
wow! that floored me.
Elvis retreating at 5:13 as if he was to say „well it’s hers now. Fuck my life“
Best cover ever...period
Best video on you tube
Finally in 1080p HQ 😀
Fiona Apple, I have no words. Just brilliant. ❤
Nice singer❤feelings
One of THE greatest performances ever!
Fantastic...once the complete articulation of my life after a heartbreak. Both her and Elvis are stunning
Fiona's intensity is incredible. Check out her version of Paul McCartney's Let Me Roll It from the Jimmy Fallon Show from 2012 or so.
Wish I could have this in FLAC
One of my fav live performances. Grateful for this absolutely amazing cover. We love you, Fiona
