    The development of this game is too wild for this to actually work, if S&Box doesn't get its main influx of users who will generate the content then no one is going to play this.
    Most people don't even understand what this "GAME" really is and that's terrifying because this game NEEDS good quality user generated content in the first month or so at least. Most people won't buy something they don't understand, it will likely take years of content being piled up for this game to achieve the draw that Garry's Mod did.

    What a bizarre choice to make the successor to Gmod a games marketplace instead of a sandbox game. Not like that's the NAME of the project or something.
    I was excited to hear about what I thought was a new Gmod but I guess I'll be passing on this since it'll just be a bunch of zero effort games made by kids and asset flippers

      I was around back when S&Box was going to be on the Unreal Engine and it looked a lot more like Gmod back then.
      But yeah, my problem with it is that they keep calling it a "SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR TO GARRY'S MOD" to this day without it really having anything to do with Gmod. That and the FUCKING DEFAULT PLAYER MODELS. Also, they keep acting like it's soooo much better than Gmod because "you can create games on it!", WHAT THE FUCK WAS TROUBLE IN TERRORIST TOWN THEN?! OR BETTER YET JAZZTRONAUTS?!
      There is some things to like (like not having to pay for a licence to make games on it), but with all the bullshit surrounding it ("HEY DO YOU LIKE GARRY'S MOD? THIS GAME IS THE SEQUEL TO GARRY'S MOD! "How's it like Garry's Mod?" "DON'T BE SO JUDGEMENTAL IT'S NOTHING LIKE GARRY'S MOD IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE GARRY'S MOD!!!!1!!11!!!1!"!!!1........... HEY DO YOU LIKE GARRY'S MOD? WE MADE A SEQUEL TO GARRY'S MOD!" "FOR FUCK SAKE!") it becomes increasingly hard to give a shit.
      Oh and there's fuck all engine documentation right now, so good luck figuring out how to make mods for it.

    Reading the comments show that people dont understand what s&box is... Garry always seemed to favoured gamemodes over standalone addons, thats why they had the gamemode jam in gmod ( birth place of TTT ), and why the most complicated things are usually reserved for gamemodes. S&box puts the focus entirely in the gamemodes part of gmod, from the ground up built to be modular and freeform. That's my vision on why he calls a succesor to gmod, in the eyes of garry, gmod was the TTT, DarkRP, Murder, it was Ruin, Jazztronauts and all that.

    I really hope S&box takes a few more years to develop before actually being released. It's still in a very rough state and if it wants to compete it needs to feel like a somewhat finished thing.

    My thoughts? It feels utterly unfocused.
    The game calls itself the spiritual successor to Garry's Mod (when not saying "it's nothing like Garry's Mod" to deflect any and all criticism despite going so far as to put it on Source 2 to make it more like Garry's Mod), yet there's little, if anything, of what made Garry's Mod good. As a game, it kinda fucking sucks. But as a game engine, it still sucks, Unity and GODOT already exist, actually work and have far more possibilities due to being ACTUAL game engines.
    The game is clearly meant for modders and developers, yet the default player models look like they're meant for toddlers and even then they're terrible, being off-brand Minions with weirdly realistic skin textures that don't fit the cartoony look of the model. Worse still, since that's the default player model that's what 99% of all modding content is going to be based around, those fucking abominations that, not content with being at the bottom of the uncanny valley, or even the uncanny ocean, go all the way down to the uncanny core of the fucking uncanny planet.
    Garry says it's going to have so many alternate player models available through modding it won't matter, but since copyrighted content isn't allowed that means there's even less reason to believe him since you can't even port models that aren't fucking disgusting over. It sounds petty now but you have to put up with those fucking abominations for 99% of the game at best. It isn't even that it'll be my player model, MY player model isn't the one I'll have to see when in first person. Facepunch say "THE MODDERS WILL FIX IT!" but there's FUCK ALL documentation of the engine, so obviously that's a fucking lie.
    On the subject of copyrighted content, not allowing it is fine, but you have to have replace it with something good and what little assets S&Box has are FUCKING HIDEOUS. If it's a good incentive to make my own assets it's a FUCKING AMAZING INCENTIVE TO JUST USE AN ACTUAL FUCKING GAME ENGINE. I HAVE TO DO THE PROGRAMMING, I HAVE TO DO THE MODELLING, I HAVE TO DO PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING, SO I MIGHT AS WELL JUST MAKE A FUCKING STANDALONE GAME WITHOUT HAVING TO GO THROUGH GARY. I'm not expecting full replacements for everything in Half-Life 2 AND it's episodes AND Counter-Strike, but maybe some non-painful to look at default playermodels and maybe enough for a decent small town map would be nice, like maybe enough to be on-par with the first The Sims game with some additional stuff for shops and offices (with no expansions). Maybe even just half of The Sims 1 if it still has a lot of assets since I haven't played The Sims 1, I just picked it because it would logically have the smallest budget and therefore have the least assets to start with. Facepunch want to call it a spiritual successor to Garry's Mod, alright, let's have some decent assets WITHOUT having to mod them in, enough for a basic RP map.
    As for a release in 2024? That's just straight up fucking delusional. S&Box needs a lot more polish to maybe be suitable for early access.
    There was a time I wanted this game to be good and succeed, but that was long ago. Imagine a true spiritual successor to Garry's Mod, with decent player models right from the start, a character creator for both player models and ragdolls for machinima and their version of Source Filmmaker, with the versitility to make anything from a manly man so muscular Kratos looks like Astolfo to a dainty femboy so girly Astolfo looks like Kratos, the basic game modes, sandbox, roleplay, etc.
    And then three unrelated games: a basic Resident Evil Mercenaries mode style action game with an anime art style, a cute, non-violent platform game about a puppy, and the one Condemned ripoff they made for the game jam. All to convince people of S&Box's potential as a game platform and available from the main menu so the audience can see them. THAT'S what I want to see, not a buggy roblox ripoff with an okay at best game engine, but a complete core around which the possibilities of modding are an enhancement and not a crutch.

      I want to expand on this more, but I feel the main post is long enough so I'm putting this as a reply. When I talk about Gmod, I'm mostly talking about the three things Gmod is most well known for, the "pillars" of Gmod so to speak. Sandbox, Machinima and Roleplay. I was keeping up with S&Box news when it was supposed to come out on the Unreal engine, mainly because it looked more like it was actually looking to expand on what made Gmod great, even including a system for mounting games (albeit much more awkwardly, as it was to be done through importers).
      Then they made what was known back then as "Tub Guy" the default player models, and I didn't realize it but that was the first warning sign. I figured they would use a realistic model, or a more cartoony one as the main default player model and keep "Tub Guy" as an example of an alternate player model and so over time I kept getting more and more reasons to not care, from the FUCKING CREEPY default player models to going from Unreal to Source 2 seemingly solely to make the game more like Gmod to the game becoming more and more like a ROBLOX clone while those FUCKING CREEPY player models became more prominent.
      To paraphrase a quote @thatcipher down in the comments: "S&Box felt like an awesome hybrid of GMod and games like Roblox. Now it just feels like another Unity just with a quick game browser implemented."
      I WANT TO LIKE S&BOX, but I just keep getting reasons not to care. I even came up with my own game idea to make assets for since Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike content could no longer be used. It would take some of my old OCs (since I never used them anyway), have a "cyberpunk in space" setting (mainly so I have use an excuse to have a level on another planet and not strictly adhere to realism), gameplay that takes inspiration from Half-Life 2 and modern shooters where appropriate, and monster designs inspired by Resident Evil, all tied together with a dark anime artstyle (mainly because the alternative is realism I can't do that, and anime seemed like it would be the 2nd most wanted artstyle after realism) and part of me wants to make it, but realistically, well...
      What's the fucking point? To create a core for people to build upon that should have been there in the first place? To create an anime style character creator because the creepy default player models should have had not just an alternative but an outright replacement in the first place and realism was looking a lot harder for me, some fucking guy without a dev team to help? Monumental effort to add a bunch of shit that realistically, should have been there? The concept is absurd! I was basically trying to compensate for the fact that ultimately Garry and Facepunch just expected to succeed by divine right, why the fuck should I be expected to compensate for his failings when I have basically fuck all experience in game development?! Let alone people who actually know what they're doing be expected to compensate for his failings?!
      Don't get me wrong, I DESPERATELY want S&Box to have a counterpart to Gmod's Half-Life 2 content. Give me a big dev team who are will to work for free or give me a big dev team and money to pay them and I WILL go out of my way to make it reality. Give me programmers and I will give you basic gameplay, give me modellers and I will give you levels to mess around shoot baddies in, give me artists and I will give you enemy and weapon designs, give me programmers AND modellers and I will give you a character creator to make your own OCs, but more importantly to use as a template to add your own content, whether they be morally ambiguous cyberpunk mercenaries, mighty fantasy heroes in knightly armour or just modern day ordinary dudes.
      Ultimately, I came to the conclusion: I was doing this because there was a time when this looked fun, when it's rallying cry was "the modders will make it better" not "THE MODDERS WILL NOT ONLY FIX IT BUT MAKE THE FUCKING GAME FOR US!". And it clearly is marketing itself as a game and not just a game engine since it calls it's marketing blurb on the webside is "Our spiritual successor to Garry's Mod" to this day, "Our spiritual successor to Garry's Mod, this is a game creation platform built on the Source 2 engine.", "s&box is a spiritual successor to Garry’s Mod and a love letter to Source 2." SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR TO GARRY'S MOD! SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR TO GARRY'S MOD! SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR TO FUCKING GARRY'S MOD!
      Yes they say "IT'S NOT GARRY'S MOD!" to deflect criticism but they have "SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR TO GARRY'S MOD" all over their fucking marketing so I will judge it by the standard they've gone out of their way to set and while I was not expecting an exact copy of Garry's Mod, I was at least expecting something more than FUCKING "UNITY AT HOME".
      One last thing: One draft of the opening to my hypothetical game would have one of the two main characters, two clone super soldier siblings on the run from their creators who will stop at nothing to hunt down the "defective products", be implied to want to stop running because it was getting to the point that they had been on the run so long he was thinking about committing incest. Yes it could be off-putting, that was the point, it was off-putting for said character and to show that they truly had no choice to run anymore. It was make a stand and find a way to get off their creators radar or otherwise force their creators to stop hunting them, or start voice training southern US accents because the newly founded New Alabama was going to have a fucking population explosion and hope the evil corporate mercenaries die from emotional damage and they chose to make a stand.
      When I look at the default player models for S&Box, the impression I get is that it's the result of THE DEVELOPERS committing incest.

    I'm sad that I never got to test s&box, I'm a C# programmer that really enjoys Garry's Mod from time to time. I suppose I'll get my chance once I buy it some day.

    Thanks for the vid, I'll give you my opinion.
    For all my love for s&box, yes god I'm even watching this video right now on a break from creating a course on s&box, I moderate a community of 10k people every day who are waiting for this platform, we've made a custom FAQ, we're writing guides, socializing, finding potential investors and doing great work.
    But I really dislike that FP treat their brainchild like a regular pet project. They have that right, and I'm not judging them, I'm saying "I don't like it".
    Seriously, they have the potential to have such a strong bomb that could tear through the entire gaming industry and make it a lot easier to make games, to rethink the approach in general. But for that to happen, you need business support. And that's where I'll smoothly move into monetization.
    I don't know what Garry is thinking, but why reinvent the wheel?
    1 - Make normal multiplayer and block server code for clients. Guarantee commercial secrets, and put the responsibility on us.
    2 - Make an official s&box store, hire moderators, since FP has so much money that they don't even want to take commission from us.
    3 - Don't prevent others from creating their own stores and donation aggregators
    That's all, people want it, it works for a thousand years and everyone is happy. It's the way it is in Garry's Mod, it's the way it is in GTA 5 RP, it's the way it is in Rust, it's the way it is everywhere. Ok, you can still analogize "buy me coffee", paid invites, selling the game and a lot of other things.
    Even we are ready to do it already. We are looking for sponsors for about 4-6k$ to realize a huge stack of services and systems. Including free and useful for the whole community. We cooperate with everyone, English speaking, French and Russian. All of them. We are developing the s&box ecosystem, adding assets, guides, with full understanding that tomorrow it could break, and it's not a fact that the game will be released at all.
    Seriously, we take risks and we love this game. But I don't understand why we can't be a little more serious about a project that tens of thousands of people around the world are waiting for?
    I'll say it again, I'm not judging FP, it's their project = their business. And we are ready to pay them commissions, I don't understand the strange "we don't need the money" either, Rust won't always feed the studio, or will the story of Garry's Mod from 2006 be repeated again?
    So please, I don't communicate well in English and obviously won't be able to "just" get my thoughts across to the developers. Tell them that we love the project and are waiting, but don't make it complicated, invent a wheel and can take it a little more seriously. Making games together, earning everything. Nobody hurts anybody.

    What made Garry's MOD SO good was the evolution of it's player base and the game, I'm sorry to garry but making the game unplayable to hundreds of thousands of people that could be making mods, starting communities, and populating the game leading to them finding and fixing bugs and adding content that REAL players want just seems like wasted potential.
    I do understand why he did for so long, making the game playable, getting content out there before any sort of launch, and polish. But, there's been months where I saw updates that made me cringe, like the one where they added gloss to the dumb ass bean characters eye, like, really? That's what needed focus? Something that's not gonna be notice by most players and could be modded in and out of the game.
    Before I get that childish "game development takes time" let me remind you that while s&box is trying to be an open source gaming making platform, the majority of the community is coming from GMOD, and the majority of the community will most likely partake in Sandbox, RP, and all the silly gmod like gamemodes, not these fully made games
    (not saying people won't play them, as they showed off not too long ago, they can make really awesome looking games in s&box).
    But that's enough of my rant, I hope the best for the team and I'm really hype for the game. Garry knows best so I have no doubt this game will be fun when it comes out

    i wonder if s&box will be cross platform including consoles. i dont see the addons or game creator tools being in the console versions but i can imagine it including all the games made on s&box and also the sandbox mode.

    I'm actually really sad about the change to the scene system
    I feel like the original entity system provided by valve is way more developer friendly imo
    Right now creating custom content for a certain game is not possible as far as I know as for before you could easily do custom content.
    A Custom Map? No problem - just download the Entities into Hammer and create an own Map.
    Custom Game object? Create a Custom Entity compatible with the existing one and voila there you go.
    S&Box felt like an awesome hybrid of GMod and games like Roblox. It felt like you could create your own Games but also allow easy expansion from other devs for the most costumization possible.
    Right now it just feels like another Unity just with a quick game browser implemented.

    im gonna be honest im all for s&box being a roblox-like engine. i hate using roblox because they have really questionable practices but i also want to make games casually without the nightmare of networking. also its nice being able to try out games without downloading the entire thing
