After over 10 years of painting (mostly struggling on my own without a teacher) I never have done this, as I didn’t have any idea what those pieces were for. I know I should have asked someone, but today it was YOU who taught me. Thank you! 😃
I never knew ehat to fo with these so I used to collect them then use them to make "white fences" for my small house-like projects 😂 Thank you for the perfect and straight to the point explanation.
Just applied for a school art exhibition. They gave me the same canvas and acrylics. I've never drawn with acrylics and when I saw those Keys, I kept wondering what I have to do with them. Thank you so much for clearing out a lot of questions! :)
Thanks for this. While using some too-thin keys today I discovered that a section of an emery board for filing nails works well in providing the necessary additional wedge.
Almost 4 years of Acrylic and Oil painting on canvas (both stretched and non-stretched canvas board) and I'm embarrassed to confess that I always threw these away, even though I knew they are for tightening the canvas. I just failed to understand how it's done. This video was just what I needed!!! Thank you so much for sharing! ❤️
You don't want a corner staple crossing the joint as it connects the two stretcher bars so the staple stops the keys from actually pushing the stretcher bars apart as intended.
Oh boi... You saved my time to understand about these canvas board wooden keys...I was confused when I got the canvas board for my wife... Curiosity made me to watch TH-cam and I found your video in few seconds of search... Thanks a lot... From 🇮🇳 cheers
thank you. i'm starting paint and i didn't know nothing about canvas, and you are really help with your Training and explanations. So thank you soo much.
Thank you for showing how to fit them so clearly. I was wondering why the ones I had kept falling out, now I know to look for those with a tighter fit.
I have lot of those keys when I buy canvas panel, and I don't know where to use it. Now that I learned it from your channel, what I will do now to collect all those keys and put it on my panel. I hope I still have it my stuff. Thanks a lot for sharing this info.
Perfect explanation for someone like me, never knew how and why they were there or how you put them there, you also had a reasoning why you should put them there :)
So do you need to re tap them into place after you finish painting the canvas as well? Sure the painting on the canvas. Loosens it again, or should you just not use them until after the painting is complete?
Light Dawns!! Supidly I didn't realise to leave them in while I did the painting - ah well, shows you are never too old to learn something new, thank you so much Clive for posting this video. xx
I’ve always used the keys the way you do with the long sides flush against the stretcher bars. I just watched a video put out by Richmond Art where the presenter says to do it the opposite way. They all look quite untidy at the end! Hopefully it doesn’t matter which way it’s done. 😊
Thanks for the video - very clear and detailed! Can you please clear something up for me, I've noticed that when I put them in longside down, the pointy bit then pokes the canvas out on the corners, is this correct and it leaves pointy dimples in the canvas, is this correct?
Hi can i stick printed canvas directly on wood? N if yes thn wch glue do i need? I dnt want to fold canvas on side edges .. i just want in front cut n stick on wood or mdf
Thank you bro! It pisses me off that they dont leave any instructions for this, ive bought 20+ canvases and always threw away the damn things lol. Btw. I´ve seen that one of my paintings have started to warp. I havent done anything to it but its bent out of shape. Will the keys prevent this or is it another cause?

Thanks Clive! Can one put those keys into a finished painting?
What to do if i already bought a canvas and the ends poke out but i have have to start the pianting and i dont have enough tine to buy a better one?
It's funny how so many ppl don't know what the keys are but would never do a little research
I would argue that the canvas suppliers should provide instructions.
Hi can i stick printed canvas directly on wood? N if yes thn wch glue do i need? I dnt want to fold canvas on side edges .. i just want in front cut n stick on wood or mdf
