IMO, American Country Music in the 70's, 80's, and 90's is the best of all times! Lucky ones, like me, who could listen to such precious songs! As long as I live I'll never get enough of it! Those are REAL music not today's crap!
The song writer is Mick Hanly, a brilliant Irish singer/songwriter. Here is Hal Ketchum with Mick Hanly, singing in a pub here in Ireland . th-cam.com/video/3kxOBrJQxS4/w-d-xo.html
I think this song has changed my life. I've listened to it continiously for several days now. I'm 33 years old, and never liked country music before. But this song resonates with me in a way I've never experienced before.
Country had a huge revival in the late 80’s and early 90’s from artists like Hal Ketchum, Restless Heart, Rodney Crowell, etc. that hit the charts hot on American Country Countdown for brief periods of time before another took hold, usually within a week or two. These artists didn’t get half the recognition they deserve, especially this tune... and artist. One of the most haunting beloved country classics that will play on for years.
174 thumbs down on one of the most well written & sung songs out there, produced by Allen Reynolds. Maybe you should listen to what YOU like, & turn that thumb up & sit on it!
I saw hal ketchum live this past summer (08) and to tell the truth, i don't think this version does him justice. He is frickin AMAZING live. I am not kidding. this was his first song, he started with the steel guitar, it was awesome. Most 13 year olds, have never heard of him. But I begged my dad to let me go to his show. And the best part is i got to meet him. Me and my sister just went up to him and he shook our hand and talked to us, he is so nice and down to earth, I seriously almost died
I couln't have put it any better, this is what youtube is really good for is hearing these classics of my childhood, all of my favorites are classics like this!
Was on my way home yesterday when i heard this song, that i hadnt heard in many years.brought me to tears.Had to google to find out who sang it.Is now 4 ever being played in my music.some broken hearts...never mend
I don't listen to country in general, but I listen to this and a handful of others from my childhood. Funny how they stay with you forever. Late 80s and most of the 90s was such a crucial time for various genres. It wasn't about pop, but rather something much deeper. I'm glad I was growing up during that time and experienced it.
One HELL of a GOOD song ---great rhythm , strong beat , awesome lyrics ! WHY can't these " country - ? - LITE stations up here play this GOOD stuff like I remember not so Very long ago ? Hal Ketchum ROCKS !!
Reminds me of living in south Georgia in 1991-96. We used to drive them dirt roads on Saturday nights and drink beer and listen to this stuff all night long. What a great time in life.
The first time I heard this was on the car radio on my way to work. I didn't know who was singing, but I was so taken with it, I called the radio station to ask!
This is really a great song. I can remember when it first came out. I thought at the time that Hal would become a real star. I don't know what happened but this man had real talent.
He had a lot of health problems. 1998 Hal was diagnosed with a neurological disorder and had to relearn basic tasks like walking and playing guitar. Then he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, a disease which took his mother's life.
Yeah, I love this song. The part "Is no word form you at all the best that you can do"---that is really jarring to me. Guess because we can all relate.
Back in the day when this song came out I used to leave the reel to reel running, recording off the radio then would transfer the songs I liked to cassette editing out the commercials. I recorded a cassette with only this song playing over and over and over. I still have it. Love the song.
This was actually written by Irishman Mick Hanly, a great guy. Very talented writer and Hal is a very talented singer and guitarist! Great combination on this song.
haha I know right? However, I was 2 or 3 when this came out in 91/92. I can't stop listening to it now. SO much better than the garbage that passes as "country" today. Glad I was alive when it was new but I was a little toddler and barely remember. >_> I actually remember hearing Small Town Saturday Night when it was a hit around the same time.

As one who also writes and appreciates the trade, to me this song was very well written and professionally assembled, both in lyrics and instruments. It clearly wasn't put on paper and studio recorded in fifteen minutes like a lot of the garbage being passed off today as art.

We all seem to like this song. Some don't know why - they don't 'normally' like country. Here's the reason: it is perfection.
