The rarest Japanese synthesizer? | Suiko ST-50

  • In which I demo and make music with an obscure synthesizer made for the Japanese traditional music market, the Suiko ST-50. Created to accompany poetry, the ST-50 is a beautiful and strangely timeless instrument. Its haunting sound and unusual playing style set it apart from many other instruments.

    For those interested in these types of sounds that can't track down a Suiko, I recommend looking into a Roland JV-1080/2080 loaded with the Asia expansion card. It was manufactured in the early 90's as well and is great for cinematic stuff

    I believe the bottom notes of the synth are in the Hira-joshi scale; one of the minor pentatonic scales used in Japanese music. This is the most common scale used for tuning the Koto, which is the stringed instrument this synth is supposed to sound like.

    • @Axel_Stewart
      @Axel_Stewart 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@user-lt2rw5nr9s It is not just possible but easy to use elements of music traditions in offensive ways, whether that be just by making a crude pastiche or removing religious music from a religious context. Reductive representations of music cultures are at their best annoying and their worst offensive. This isn't to say that it can't be an exchange of ideas because it absolutely can. It's just not always harmless.

    • @user-lt2rw5nr9s
      @user-lt2rw5nr9s 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@Axel_Stewart Well who decides if it's offensive? Can't I call everyone outside Europe offensive for using Western music scales? Can't I call everyone who makes Jazz music in Japan offensive? What about Nazi Germany declaring Jewish composers offensive? Or during China's cultural revolution when they oulawed Western music? Or the time the Church banned the tritone? Let all music exist, and those who want to consume it, consume it. Those who don't, don't have to.
      Is removing religion any different than taking the lush chords of Gospel and putting it into RnB, outside their religious context? Who cares anyway? If you don't like it, don't listen to it, moral authoritarian.
      Annoying to whom? To you? Isn't there going to be at least one person who finds your music annoying? Just because it's annoying someone or offending someone are you going to stop? They can just stop listening.
      Way too often people speak on behalf of other people to call things offensive. If it doesn't offend you personally, don't bother bringing it up. If it does, I probably couldn't care less. Just stop listening.

    • @Axel_Stewart
      @Axel_Stewart 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@user-lt2rw5nr9s Continuing the argument to absurdity or comparing me to authoritarians isn't useful. Music has great cultural power and that power must be wielded with care. However convenient it is to believe that you are not responsible for the effects of your actions it is ultimately an act of willful ignorance. Generally the people who "get to decide if it's offensive" are the people whose musical culture is being referenced, and you don't get to decide that they are not offended because it's a personal response. The only ethical way to conduct yourself is to attempt to minimize harm.

    About the notes on the keyboard, they are labeled in Solfege. It looks like the top row repeats {Fa-#, Sol, Ti-b (flat), Do-#, Re} 3 times from left to right. The bottom row repeats {Mi, Fa, La, Ti, Do} 3 times from left to right. I guess that would make the top row {F#, G, Bb, C#, D}x3 and the bottom row {E, F, A, B, C}x3. By the way, not sure if you already knew this, but the button you used to turn on the "beautifully weird chorus" is labelled "Vibrato" and the two sliders next to the display are Vibrato Speed (top) and Vibrato Depth (bottom).

      Even a piano has the exact notes this synth is tuned to. It's just fun to play on something that can play *only* one scale, as you can't really go wrong. If you have a DAW that can auto-correct to a particular scale you can do the same thing on your computer. It's really fun to bash the keys and play something in Japanese, Arabic, Pentatonic scales even with very little musical knowledge.

    Strange key layout. Luckily they printed the European note names (do, re, mi, fa etc) instead of the more traditional i, ro, ha, ni, ho, he, to (iroha) system, making it a bit easier - once you learn how to read the characters. Funny story: the iroha system is based on a 1000 year old Japanese poem that uses each syllabic character only once, and thus it also became the order of the "alphabet" for listing purposes.
    In Japanese, when you want to tell someone to learn their ABC's, you say learn their "iroha", which can thus also translate as "the basics".

    I took one look at the thumbnail and thought "eugh, this is gonna sound cheesy" and no it doesn't at all. I love its clean sound of those traditional japanese taiko drums and their other instruments, plus the strings are gorgeous.
    It sounds far better than it looks.
    What's the polyphony of it?

    • @Starthief
      @Starthief 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I performed with a taiko group for a couple of years, so I have a more critical ear where it comes to taiko samples. I would categorize this one as "not terrible, considering" -- good for reverby ambient/cinematic booms, but I probably wouldn't try to use it for taiko pieces as such.

    • @Decoy303
      @Decoy303 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Taiko drums are killer but some of the synth tones are so very Detroit while sounding so Japanese. Would love a clone version or just a complete sample pack for this in say a Volca sample library.

      It's the Hira-joshi scale, which is one of the pentatonic scales in Japanese music. The bottom keys of this synth are supposed to sound like a Koto tuned to that scale.

      I LOVE your 'avatar' pic, GNU_Ninja. I wouldn't dare to imagine the sound that dumbbell handle would make as it's dragged across her teeth!? I still haven't found the sequel to that one, BodyHammer!? I'll always be on the lookout though. The third one has something about it that I found a little reminiscent of the old HBO series "Freddy's Nightmares", or the "Tales From The Crypt" show. Good to know there's folks out there who appreciate edgy sci fi horror! Chu Ishikawa's sound track is inseparable from the film, I'm sad he passed on a lot sooner than I would have liked to imagine but he has left a pretty substantial mark that won't be erased.
