    Wow, this video must have beeen a labour of love! Fascinating to learn the history of Japanese poetry and find out just how many of these trainer devices exist. I own the relatively simple Suiko ST-20, which sounds incredible through a reverb guitar pedal. It's an instrument I can happily mess around with for hours.

    I had a random memory pop up and googled "Japanese poetry practice synth" and this is the first thing that popped up. Not only are these EXACTLY, what I meant, but I get essentially a feature length documentary about them! I can not tell you how JUICED I am to watch this!

      @@zecchouband Trying to come up with more constructive feedback... I think there are some improvements that can be made to the audio quality. There's a lot of background hiss that could be addressed with physical isolation and/or gates and lo-pass eq. Then, with less noise, you can turn up your preamp gain to get more vocal presence, possibly adding mild compression. Another trick I've found helpful is to place a stuffed animal or other object on the desk and speak to their face as if it's an audience, "rubber ducking". This can help the vocals to have more "place" IMO even with mono recording. HTH

    This is the most esoteric/strange/weird vid I have watched on TH-cam in many years... and I am totally fine with that! I am fairly new to synths (playing with) though partial to non western scales ie tuvan throat singing etc. These machines and the culture around them was unknown to me.
    A lot of these, to my ears, sound less than optimal, warped 8 bit chip tune, doorbell simulator, Casio on acid... BUT the ST20, ST50 and a few others, yep I get it.
    The cost of these is eye watering and the language barrier is offputting, though I am glad you put this together. 😊👍🖖

    Awesome video :) I've spent a bunch of time in the last 48 hours watching this in various pieces and purchased my first "conductor" (waiting for it to arrive) as I keep googling I find myself having a question.... I see there are different "scales" on different units - but short of buying 10 different koto synths I'm wondering about musical scale by synth/poetry type? So relative to tonic note on various "conductor" or "Suiko" key layout "types" - what notes do the buttons represent? Do any of them play the "Black Key" / "Yo" scale.... or have bottom row as a yo scale? (I'm listening waiting for it to click but can't "hear" scales yet watching the video.). I'm trying to figure out if I can use it to improvise with a limited note vocabulary "in tune" relative to musical keys...Great work - much appreciated :)

    • @zecchouband
      @zecchouband  ปีที่แล้ว

      Tough to answer in a comment, but as a starting place, check out 01:02:45 for the hougaku conductor. Those lines from button to button are showcasing the scale path, but you'll see there are differing scales. You will also see there is a switch on the left side to switch between scale layouts. Short answer is yes you can, but a long answer would take a video on explaining japanese music theory as it relates to western. I'll put it on the todo list :) Thanks For being interested.

    • @RayKempf
      @RayKempf ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zecchouband Wow - thanks. I figured it was a long answer - and I know there are different Japanese Scales... My curiosity is if any of the Japanese Scales are (say in "key" of C) some reduced combination of notes from the western chromatic scale and if so which ones... it seems many of them are (say the YO scale which is the black keys or in "C") is C,D,F,G,A or root, second, fourth, fifth and sixth scale tones - which means it would be really handy to solo in C (or A minor) with no "wrong" notes :). Would be super interested to hear - and to create a "key" for which poetry synths are in which scale (relative to Western Chromaticism). Love, love, LOVED your video - coolest thing I've seen in quite some time and I think I know what my next 3-4 purchases now need to be :). Thanks again - RK

      Agreed. These are not necessarily crazy configurable pieces. A couple analog ones and some sample based. Their magic lies in the scales to me. Throw a Japanese instrument on top of the scales it was designed to use, and it's a new way of thinking.

    I jumped to the "What is a poetry synthesizer" section at 5:58 and I still don't know what it is because you showed an example of something that isn't one and now until i have the time to watch a movie-length doc on what they are I simply shall never know ha!! Ah well! I skimmed through and it seems like obscure bleep-bloop gadgets so I'll just assume they're some sort of synthesizer + meaningful Japanese notion / purpose attached to them and perhaps consult the goog :P

      At the end of that 2 minute section you started aka 07:50, there is a pretty nice summary. It's a device that follows the classic poetry scales and has enough buttons to easily play them.
