Armagnac is made from grapes. It is a distilled white wine from Gascony, heated in an "Armagnac still", then aged in oak barrels. From the vine to wine and from wine to Armagnac, parentage is crucial. Express the best of the terroir, ensure its most perfect expression, preserve the typicity of its nuances: The quality of the distilled wine determines the quality of Armagnac.
What does the Armagnac AOC appellation cover?
Recognized AOC since 1936, it extends over the department of Gers, Est des Landes and the South of Lot-et-Garonne. The diversity of its soils is at the origin of a subdivision into three terroirs with a distinct identity, three sub-regions of production established by the Fallières decree in 1909.
To the east, Haut Armagnac, or "Armagnac Blanc", a landscape of limestone hills that reflect light. Slightly at altitude, this region is the most extensive of the three, but the least planted. The vines are sparse there, the producers are rare, which makes it the most confidential region of production. The soil is hard to work. Composed of clay and limestone (peyrusquet), it produces a light brandy with a lively floral flavor. A rough diamond!
In the center, the Ténarèze, crossed by a crest path attributed to Julius Caesar. Its soil of silt (boulbène), clay and limestone (terrefort) gives a rich and full-bodied brandy which reaches its maturity after a prolonged aging.
To the west, Bas Armagnac, or "Armagnac Noir", a landscape of hills covered with forests of small oaks. It is the most planted region, and the best known, because its vines survived the ravages of phylloxera at the turn of the 20th century. Its poor and acidic soil composed of clay, silica and ferruginous elements, called "tawny sands", produces a light and fruity brandy.
The simple designation "Armagnac" refers to a blend of two or three Armagnac sub-regions, a designation characteristic of traders.
    Chateau Arton
It took daring to reintroduce the vines to Haut Armagnac, reinvent this little-known appellation and give it its own identity. Dedicated to his land, Patrick de Montal was rewarded in 2017 when the Armagnacs Château Arton received the Prix d'Excellence in the Eau-de-Vie category at the Concours Général Agricole de Paris, a distinction priceless, all the more priceless since it is granted for the first time to an Armagnac.
Owner harvesting the Domaine d 'Arton, Patrick de Montal cultivates with great care his vines, raises his wines, distills them to elaborate in his cellars a range of Armagnacs with roundness and unpublished velvety. Voluptuous, very aromatic, they redefine the taste territories of Armagnac. Their uniqueness imposes Haut Armagnac as a land of innovation.
Château Arton is made from white Ugni, a distillation grape par excellence, and Colombard, a more confidential local grape. The white Ugni gives acid, low alcoholic wines, which produce, after distillation, a fine brandy. The Colombard, very popular in the vinification of Côtes de Gascogne wines, is distinguished, after distillation, by its fruity, lemon and spicy aromas which sublimate the blends.

Je ne savais pas que l'Armagnac était conçu ainsi. Bien que cette vidéo soit brève, elle nous enseigne bien des choses.
