  • Hey everyone!
    This is how I built the miter saw wings for my DWX726 Dewalt Stand out of 3/4" thick plywood. I saw a lot of different miter saw wings when I was a superintendent in residential construction. However, after seeing the one's Spencer has over on Insider Carpentry I knew I needed some myself. I came across a video by the Homecraft Solutions TH-cam channel about his wings for the same stand that was an awesome build! Mine is very similar to his.
    Here's a link to his video that I saw:

    Now, what I'm showing here is specific to the DWX726. But! The concepts of this are pretty generic and you could easily apply them to whatever stand you have.
    I've love having these wings when I've been working. They've been a huge game changer!
    If you're interested in getting the same saw stand I have in the video here is a link to where you can buy it. I'm affiliated with Amazon, so if you buy it from here I do get a small commission at no extra cost to you, which is pretty cool if you ask me.

    Also, just in case you are looking for a good book series I thought I'd recommend my favorite! The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan/Brandon Sanderson is an incredible fantasy series spanning 15 books. It's a hum dinger of a read, but it was so much fun to discover! I feel like this book makes you have to go and tell other people about it, so, here's an innocent little link to the first three books of the series in case you want to read them!

    I'm not a professional, but I've done quite a bit of remodeling in the field on rental units I've purchased. I've wanted to make a good set of wings like this for a while, but everyone's build seemed over complicated. Yours is so straightforward and understandable. Thanks. I'm going to use your design. I've liked and subscribed.

      Thank you! I’m glad to have you as a subscriber! Have fun with the wings. The simplicity is what drew them to me as well when I first saw someone else with them.

    I like your idea incorporating the mitre stand with wheels. So much easier on the back. At the end of a long day, last thing I like doing is lifting the saw so this will help. I got everything ordered to deck out the wings and I’m stoked!

      Exactly why I’m watching this video. I’ve been having a lot of back pain to the point I’m seeing a chiropractor. I have a dewalt 12” slider and is the heaviest tool I have to lift daily. This set up solves my back problems.

    Nice work. 👌🏼 One suggestion. Take a hacksaw or grinder to the harbor freight legs at the bottom on either side. Pop the rubber caps off and trim an inch or so on both sides so they tuck up inside when storing. Great stand!

      That’s a great idea! Thanks for the tip!

      Instead of shortening the metal stand support foot, if the side supports (frame) supporting the plywood wings are tall enough you might consider notching the side supports for the metal foot to fit flush. IMHO a longer support foot is better for stability. While watching you're video I thought about that and making the wings out 1/2" plywood for weight.
      Your video gave me an idea of how to mofify the/your design and use the clamps on my workmate to support the wings. I'll add stop blocks to the wings as well.
      Great Video, thxs for posting.

    Nice build, and definetly will use your idea, but probably add a piece of flat bar stock to triangulate and lock the roller stand leg in the open position. Not trying to be an a-hole but....You really over thunk the pivot points for the roller stand legs, use shorter bolts, then a few washers stacked up to fill the gap, then through the stand and add a washer and finally take a nut and install to just slightly tighten down on the roller stand to give it a little friction and then thread another nut on, hold first nut and tighten second nut down against first nut to lock them in place, no need for a washer between the nuts like you had in the video. Also will add a back fence with a T slot track and tape measure to provide a moveable stop block for repetitive cuts. Thanks for the great idea!

      @berlinbuilds  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! You're totally right about the over thinking the whole attachment of the roller leg stands! I like your idea a lot better. I've been thinking about adding a fence and tape measure on mine as well.

    I made a similar set of miter saw wings for the DWX 726 stand and made a video of it over 3 years ago. I made mine to the proper dimension of the roller stand so I didn't need any washers. Not a bad . Keep trying.

      Yes you did! I don’t know if you noticed but at the beginning of my video I mentioned you specifically as a major inspiration for my set of wings (and in the video description). Yours are a lot cooler than mine! Thanks for commenting!

      I went back and watched the beginning again and realize I must have missed you mentioning mine and Spenser's videos. Thanks for doing that. I like the way you made yours out of unfinished plywood and then finished them. I have another video out called "miter saw wings the details". I ended up cutting off 3" from the back side of the steel stand T bars so I could slide my wings to line up with my fence on the saw. I may add T track on the back side to use a stop block. I'm semi retired now so not sure if I will get it done or not. I got that Idea from Spencer at Inside Carpentry. If you end up making another set some day you could drill your front and back boards stacked together so the legs will attach exactly across from each other. When cutting crown molding its pretty important to have it all level front to back as well as lengthwise. Anyway, good job. Good quality video too.

    Good video: Miter-saw wings demystified. Ive been a bit intimidated by building a pair w/stop blocks and a crown jig but I suppose that stuff can be added or improved on in the future. I think I’ll make a pair of these to start.

    • @berlinbuilds
      @berlinbuilds  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! I was kind of in the same spot. I was wanting to make a fence with a tape measure/stop block built in, but I think something like this can have that added in after the fact. I figured I just had to jump in and start to get the benefits of the wings on the job site and figure out the rest later 😅

    Why do the wings go further back then the saw fence

    • @berlinbuilds
      @berlinbuilds  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. I stage materials on the backside of the wings behind where the piece I am cutting needs to be. I can place smaller pieces of base there for smaller cuts I’ll do later, or I’ve staged a bunch of casing legs on them so I don’t have to walk far to get them. Hope that makes sense 👍

    I'm concerned for your safety. If say the left hand wing leg is knocked while you are cutting a long length of timber, it's going to cause a seesaw action, whereby you'll instinctively try to hold your timber down, but your hand will be forced up towards the blade.
    I really hope you don't take offence, but I saw a guy morticing a cill which was over 12' long without an outboard tressle and yep that cill counterlevered on the bed with him trying to stop it. He lost a thumb to the auger and chisel.

    • @berlinbuilds
      @berlinbuilds  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your concern! I've tested these and stacked some pretty heavy material on them without any issue. I'm pretty meticulous setting them up to make sure the leg is in a good position. And most of the time my hand is nowhere closer than 12" from the blade (not always, but almost always). So, hopefully it's all good moving forward! Sorry to hear about your acquaintance.
