Trying to tie down Trivium to a single genre is impossible. Their first 2 albums were Metalcore, their 3rd was Thrash. 4th (this one) went fairly Melodeath and then 5 and 6 were a lot harder to pin down as they adopted all the best elements of their first 4 albums. 7 was unusual because the singer lost his voice and had to retrain himself to sing, meaning it had zero screaming on it and went fairly light with some nods to classic artists like Dio. And then for album 8, the screams came back and 8,9 and 10 have again been a mix of all their previous works but with a lot of extra influences as it's here that the prog elements really start to shine and for me, I think it's a bit more groovy whilst also being very metalcore, melodeath and thrashy. They are my favourite band of all time but I could not sum them up in a genre. And I think that's part of the reason I love them. They can't really be called generic or boring because they have a little something for everyone.

Even though I think that the latest 3 are the strongest arc they've ever been on. This will always be their Magnum Opus song. It hits every genre they can do, and it aces them all. The momentum and building of it is just pure hype.

This album started a new era from Trivium. They were good as fk before but Alex put something different into this band that lifted them to the top for real. ❤❤❤ This song is how you end an album for sure 😂😂

Edit-I'm really happy you enjoyed this man. It's super crazy that you picked up on the way Matt's screams are "forced" in this song. After this album he actually blew his vocal chords out and had to relearn how to scream. Their newest album "In the court of the dragon" has some monster songs on there as well but you'll definitely be able to tell that Matt's fry screams are done in more of a "correct" way. But the earlier you go on their catalog, the more fast "thrash metal" they become. Most Trivium diehard fans like myself would probably say "Shogun" as an entire album is their best work overall, but after they got their newest drummer (Alex Bent) (Does not play on this album but anything from "The Sin And The Sentence" onward he does) they found their true "Sound" as a band.

that's just because I have done vocals since late 2017 so it sounds similar to what most false chord screams sound like for the first few years! after I hear shogun I'll want to hear some of that thrash leaning stuff from them, that sounds interesting lmao

Trivium is freaking amazing. Their whole catalogue varies so much. They surely have prog elements when you look album to album not so much song to song.
PS - if you think these drums are nice you should hear their new stuff with Alex Bent. Guy is a human metronome and beast all in one

I dunno if you've listened to W.A.S.P but they're certainly good band to listen to. The Crimson Idol album is my top ten, maybe top 5, of all time albums, and I listen to a range of metal genres, albums and artists. If you haven't, there's a video called the Story of Jonathon you should listen to first if you wish to understand the references it makes. It's also a very captivating way of narrating someones (maybe fictional) life. Then the album will make a lot of sense.
I've listened to Trivium since maybe 2005 and played the hell out of Ascendancy. Crusade was a good album but Shogun is one of my top Trivium albums easily, maybe my no. 1.

They do a lot of different styles. If you are a lot into core, you should listen to their early stuff. Ascendancy is amongst the best metalcore albums of all time.
