  • Enjoy the sights & sounds of Jet2's oldest operating Boeing 757. G-LSAI, operating a full flight back to Manchester from Lanzarote, departing on Runway 03 to the North. This was one of the more spectacular departures I have experienced, as near full power was required. A full aircraft, combined with a tailwind, temperatures in the mid 20's and a relatively short runway with high terrain on the climbout certainly made for some excitement. Many aircraft had to depart via Runway 21 for performance and obstacle clearance limitations however our RB211 powered 757 piloted by an experienced Jet2 crew made light work of the situation.
One very interesting thing to note is that when takeoff thrust was commanded, the amount of air being sucked in by the engines was enough to slightly change the shape of the skin on the engine cowlings, if you look very carefully during the spool up, it is possible to see this happening in real time along with the cowlings returning to their original shape when climb thrust is selected.
G-LSAI is currently 36.6 Years old making it both the oldest 757 & oldest aircraft in the Jet2 fleet and infact one of the oldest Boeing 757's still flying today. The aircraft is number 150 to be produced and was originally delivered to China Southern Airlines as B-2803 in 1987. The aircraft was delivered to Jet2 in November 2006 where it has operated without notable incident ever since with the exception of a tailstrike in Alicante in 2017 that nearly resulted in the aircraft being written off. At the time of this video's recording just over a year ago, the aircraft was 35.6 years old.

Looked like the engine cowling was getting sucked in at first

It did slightly as a result of increased air intake

Don’t know if I’m happy about 36 year old plane still flying

I would much rather fly this as a pilot or passenger over a much younger aircraft operated by an airline that doesn't invest as much time, effort and money into fleet maintenance

None of that poncy fly-by-wire, flexy wing, serrated cowiling garbage here. Just a brute force Rolls Royce-powered rocket ship. Do one!
