  • BlaxlandAlex ( / @blaxlandridge3 ) was in need of help with his Arbour kits and asked if I could do something, so I decided to take on the challenge! For this video we're looking at the Brooks 2-6-0 and Sierra 4-6-0. The engineering of these never ceases to amaze me.

    What have I bestowed upon you oh my god!
    I knew the Sierra was bad but not THAT bad - I'll admit I was laughing at how absolutely terrible some of these castings are. You have really polished a turd. Excellent work, thank you so much!

    I really appreciate you tackling the Sierra #3. It nice to know they can be built into a running model. Now we know what adjustments have to be made. Thank you very much.

    Great video as always. What I deeply enjoyed is how you were able to intergrate new parts you hand made! I look foward to seeing your next installment, and thank you for sharing.

    Great video! Fun to see old Arbour kits be assembled. I built and got my Brooks mogul running pretty decent some years ago. But the siderods metal is quite soft so after some running the siderod bearings got worn out with binding as a result. I have now rebuilt it with new drivers and photo etched siderods that hopefully will hold up longer.

    Thanks. I may drag out my well buried NKP Berkshire kit to continue. The last thing I remember from years ago was the resistance soldering unit cranked up and the cab side evaporating. I also didn’t understand that kits sometimes need creative adjustments.

      Yeah, these take more creativity to finish than the better fitting kits from Bowser, Mantua/Tyco and MDC/Roundhouse. I think the melting point of the Arbour metal is about 675F, so the iron needs to be no more than 650F to work with it.

    Engineering or You mean Lack There Of...and the machining department (the technicians making the parts as directed by the engineers) left a bit to be desired, too...

    The 4-6-0 makes the 2-8-4 seem great.

  • @Steamerthesteamtrain

    Man this is the size and material the Tyco 3 should've been.

    • @DarthSantaFe
      @DarthSantaFe  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, they made theirs oversized to (barely) fit the motor. Considering how popular the General 4-4-0 was, I think a tender drive would’ve been forgiven.

  • @eddierools
    @eddierools ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Huh, learn something new every day, I never knew about the Sierra 4-6-0 kit until this video, I always thought that the Tyco/Mantua model was the only example of Sierra Railway #3 available in HO scale (though I'd say it's more in scale for OO). Though, you're probably way better off with the oversized Tyco than tearing your hair out trying to work with these awful kits. Not to mention the motor is actually in the locomotive shell on the Tyco, so you won't have an unsightly drive shaft between the locomotive and the tender (thinking about it, that was probably WHY the Tyco model was oversized to begin with).

    • @DarthSantaFe
      @DarthSantaFe  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the 4-8-0 version of the Tyco. It's a bit lighter, oversized for HO and does have the motor sticking all the way into the back, but I think I still prefer it for the durability and ease of maintenance.

      @@DarthSantaFe Mine's the 4-6-0, but modified to have a more modern and more compact Bachmann motor (allowed my buddy and I to cut down the boiler back head and detail the interior of the cab), but I may see about looking into an even better motor in the future.

    I have one of those 2-6-0 kits in the box! Havn't started it yet. Maybe your video will inspire me. I wonder if you have had experience with The Locomotive Company kits?

      I do have a TLC kit new in the boxes. Haven’t started it yet, but it looks like it’ll be a tough one!

      @@DarthSantaFe I wonder about the quality of the castings. Are they white metal like Arbour? Or more like Zamac?

    • @DarthSantaFe
      @DarthSantaFe  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jimlowther2453 They seem more like the white metal used by Arbour. Zinc and Zamak castings require steel dies and machinery to make properly, but white metal can be cast in cheaper low-temperature molds, so that's why it's usually the metal of choice for small manufacturers.

    Hello
    I have an Arbor Models 4-4-0 that I bought on eBay. Then found out it was way beyond my skill level. What would you charge if you have time to assemble and paint.
    Thanks Ben

      I think I can help with that. If you send an e-mail to darthsantafe@gmail.com then we can see about working something out.

    Hey Darth, love the videos! Out of curiosity do you think you may be able to help me get a “newer” rivarossi light heavy pacific going again? I bought it “New in box” but the engine has some wear on the drivers.
