like the features, setup was difficult for some of my devices (August Door lock, th-cam.com/users/postUgkxhB5YOMNj04GuoAosExygP4cH-dKeb4aB Bose speaker)... but all switches and outlets (5), thermostat, tankless water heater. Unfortunately all I can do is turn on/off Bose. It doesn't support volume or changing channels, but I believe that is due to the particular speaker I have.... Worth getting if you already have other devices to use it with... I don't sit around and ask Alexa questions much so that doesn't really matter to me....

Funny thing about that. I was talking about automating things and my wife said, "Could you get the hose to shut off after two hours when I'm watering plants?" and "Could you get it so no matter which switch in the kitchen I switch on all the lights come on?"
I did both (and a few other of her ideas). I won't say she never kids me about my hobby, but I'd venture to say it's a lot less than some get.
I'll heartily agree with what Paul said in another video that you have to find a way that acts like the standard hardware because my wife also doesn't like "talking to the machine."

As another member of STA (Shiny Things Anonymous) I feel you missed one environment HomeKit.
Personally, I use it as my every daily driver as a front end to the Home Assistant back end. This allows me to control all the devices even if they are not HomeKit certified. The native iOS app give me access to information not available in the Amazon or Google apps. And when you find limitations of the Home App you will discover other free commercially developed apps like the Eve App which greatly extends the core functionality.

Hello Mr Hibbert, I personally think Samsung won't introduce a subsciption service. I could be wrong, so as a work arround connect your devices to Smartthing then install HA on a Rasperry Pi then add the Smartthing intergration to HA to import the devices from Smartthings, once imported then you can add the Remote Control and Voice assistants for free after
watching a few videos on You Tube

A minor point about Home Assistant, you were fair but I think I disadvantage is also a potential advantage. When something breaks after an update, and I agree it will, you will in almost all cases be able to fix it. This doesn't apply to the off the shelf solutions. If they decide to change something you are stuck.

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Homey is a prime example of that! They broke one of my integrations days after receiving the device and their answer was that not enough people use the brand they broke so they have no intention of fixing it!

I agree with many things that you are saying about home assistant, but if you use home assistant only for input (sensors, switches, etc) and output (lights, sockets, etc) and use Node-Red as the brains, everybody can change and maintain the rules of the system. Even my girlfriend understands node-red, and she doesn't understand technology.. But she loves the smart home devices even more than I am. But it can be a bit addictive, because once you get the hang of it, you constantly want to improve the scenes.. I'm a developer myself, so for me it was either OpenHab or Home Assistant as I want to be in control of everything. Everything should also keep working when there is no internet or the cloud service is offline (eWeLink). Controlling my lights remotely when I'm not home is not something that is high on my list.. So if the home assistent cloud goes down, I only loose the remote control part. In the house if have several wall mounted 7" tablets that allow me control the house.
Doing a little research before you buy a 'smart' device will tell you whether the device is supported or not. If it has no native support, you might want to look for an alternative device and spent a few dollars extra to avoid spending a few days figuring out how to get it working..

Hi Paul, thank you for the update. Your tag-line should be, "I do all the suffering so you don't have to!", because those of us who have seriously attempted home automation know you have suffered greatly, lol! Seriously though, thank you. When Samsung sort of abandoned the smart home market I freaked and froze. I'm almost on the cusp of pulling the plug and going back to a dumb house because I don't want to go through all the moving stuff over again to a new controller, figuring out routines, and what will or won't work.
Currently I use the Smartthings hub to connect low bandwidth devices such as switches, lights and outlets with Zwave and Zigbee, and then run the app on Alexa to tie the Smartthing hub in. I avoid ANY type of Wifi outlets, switches or control devices if possible, because wifi is reserved for high bandwidth devices such as cameras, streaming boxes, computers, and one old thermostat that only supports Wifi so I was stuck putting it on that network. Lastly, I rarely use or have need for the the console screen since the whole purpose of a smart home is to be smart and automated, right? So I really don't understand why the emphasis on having "one screen to rule them all!" outside of troubleshooting and testing the setups.

Samsung have not left the smart things market. They have passed the hardware manufacture over to Aeotec under license and they are concentrating on the software and integration. Obviously they are involved in the new bigger standards coming down the line so I have no doubt they are looking at that as the future and then Smart things might die off but I would expect that to be a couple of years away at least and I can't imagine they won't create some sort of link to add ST into their new system even if its a cloud based link.

Using Raspberry Pi will just give you more issues since the SD card will be dead after a certain amount of write cycles. Suggest to use a virtual software on a regular computer instead.
For wife acceptance factor, instal the shopping list app on the dashboard and have a tab in the kitchen and there will never be any nagging on why you spend time working on the server. :)

It's amazing how things have changed in two months. Google has basically teamed up with SmartThings now. I know it's not the same, but the SmartThings integration into Android Auto is awesome. Aeotec have taken on the main hardware (and jacked the price up a lot), but Samsung are sticking to updating the software. So far, touch wood, no subscription. In fact, looks like Samsung are making a lot more of it local control.

You’re right about Home Assistant Paul. The bulk of my devices are HomeKit, Alexa and Google Home compatible. Some older devices start to get flakier software updates over time. I’ve used Home Assistant to fill in support for devices that are generally unreliable from a vendor update perspective like Koogeek. I’ve used HA as a hub for hubless wifi devices like that. That being said, using HA to solve for manufacturer integration deficiencies requires a level of technical know-how and patience that is not for casual users, but workarounds are often possible with the platform.

  • @ALaModePi

Thanks for including Home Assistant. I know it's a trade off, giving you nearly complete customizability (is that a word?) at the cost of having to learn how to do some of the more obscure things. (Your kilometerage may vary, but I didn't "have" to flash any firmware, but I did spend a couple of days fooling around with the UI to get my buttons just the way I wanted.)
The thing is, I've got the controls for all of my varied brand gadgets in incredibly customizable UI.

I have the whole house full of Hue lights, exsensive - sure , but they actually tend to work, with scenes and animations, while leaving me some spare time to actually live my life. I use a separate app for the thermostat, yell the occasional command at Alexa and Google, may set up a routine if I am really bored - COVID sais hi!
Spending a week to hook up this cheap switch to that cheap lamp, in order to save 10.- as well as 3 seconds by not having to actually have to stand up to flip a switch... no thanks!
