    According to Rubinstein's autobiography, he stopped playing this in public and became quite paranoid about the piece as people close to him died when he played it...

    What exactly was "infamous" about it ? OK, he had a bad memory lapse in the second movement, but he worked his way out of it. I once saw Claudio Arrau in Carnegie Hall have just as bad a memory lapse in the Chopin Third Ballade, but he vamped through it and found his place in the score again. Rubinstein's live recitals, wrong notes included, were much more spontaneous and musically rewarding than most of his recordings. I know because I saw him live many times. And I think the way he played the last movement here was outstanding, technically and musically.

      I’ve noticed more and more people using the word “infamous” as if it were an amplification of “famous” and not “famous because of something bad.” Perhaps that’s what happened here?
