Turned pages for Mr. Rubinstein, his assistant was sick, I stepped in. I was an usher at Massey Hall. Such a moment to be on stage! I was a viola player trained at Humberside.. wonderfully memory his talent will be forever. DRM
"Chopin is the beloved elder brother of every pianist in the world, he gave us the piano, he knew what piano could do, not that other composers didn't, but chopin dreamt, felt, lived music on the piano, and it becomes magic. I play very often the most divine sonata of beethoven with all my heart, had great success with it, i played something grandiose of schumann who i do adore, you know?. it all sounds very well in public, very succesfull, but suddendly one piece of chopin....a parfume comes out of the piano, you know? you have suddendly an image of god.. something happens too, i don't know what it is.. on the worst piano, it sounds always.. it saves even bad pianos."
@@AlexAlcyone I wouldn't be surprised lol. With all those sad, minor chords played overtime I'm sure he awoke the spiritual worlds. I fear tho that unlike mozart, who channeled high spiritual states, he channeled the lower realms of departed melancholical beings. frietning indeed.
To be able to play the Polonaise Polonaise in A flat with such fervour and energy at venerable age he then was is truly remarkable. I also love his description of Chopin and what that composer means to pianists and the general public.
Une véritable leçon. Document exceptionnel !
THANK YOU for posting this previously unseen treasure featuring this 8th Wonder of the World --- by general consensus the greatest Chopinist in recorded history, and, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest hearts, minds and techniques to ever grace the keyboard. What a rare treat this has been!
Although one always thinks of anti-Semitism in Poland, Rubinstein always identified himself very much as Polish. When he went back finally after some 50 years he still spoke the language perfectly, apparently with what seemed to people old-fashioned grammatical constructions.
To all you camera and video editing people out there: Please understand that we don't need to see a 1 minute closeup of a pianists face, especially not Rubinstein's (because he looks like a painting never changing his expression). Instead, we want to see his playing apparatus, his fingers, his arms, his entire body. And if you want to show his face, simply use a blend mode so we can see both. Really, you guys have a gift to always show a pianist's face during the technically most difficult passages instead of his hands. Please don't. We want to se how the magic is made, so we can learn from it.
the lifeless faces of those music students during the polonaise. i bet they were thinking they chose the wrong major having rubinstein pop off like that lmao
Would a present day photographer have given us a view of the whole perfortmer as in a concert hall? Why all the close ups of 5 rt hand fingers and head and shoulders ?
why is this such a horrible sound here (technically) ?? A.Rubinstein is such a unique artist and singer on his instrument...he doesn´t deserve such bad record-sound-qualitiy
His "diplomacy" toward contemporary music (a classic form of "politically correctness") suddenly unveiled a glimpse beyond the outer curtain (13:55): "hurts his ears, bores him" and "leave me out of it". What a laugh I had... Truth is, about this contemporary music, that while some, very few composers, know what they are doing and despite using an basically unmusical ground they succeed using intelligent musical "processing" - the other part of componistic travail -, keeping things interesting for connoisseurs,... this "unmusical ground" opens wide the gates for entire herds of impostors and incompetents. Nothing different of what happens in society, this "modern times"... What enables this is the removal of classic/universal rules/values, only to replace it with the opposite. To shift it from order to chaos, from consonance to dissonance, from harmonic to disharmonic, from beautiful to ugly, from moral to immoral, from holly to ungodly.

No one played Chopin like Rubinstein

Not to be a nitpick, just clarifying he said "no other composers did", stating that chopin was the only one who knew what the piano could do.
"Not that"other composers didn’t.

One correction: Rubinstein doesn't say "you have suddenly an image of god"; he says "you are suddenly in a magic garden". Very nice quotation.
To be able to play the Polonaise Polonaise in A flat with such fervour and energy at venerable age he then was is truly remarkable. I also love his description of Chopin and what that composer means to pianists and the general public.
The thing that always strikes me about Rubinstein was his honesty. His answer about modern music is a perfect example.
harvardkarbodie you have very right! Very honest answere!
And so humble.
The real maestro! Thank you for your music! Rest in peace, Sir Arthur Rubinstein! Shalom!
I admire this great man..wonderful!

Those young girls are in love with him! :D
Well musicians get laid Hella often.
The women love him; the men are intimidated.
AlexLordAlcyone yes.

Thomas Gunther you don't understand what music is and what art is!
Very disrespectful
Le maître.
"but what can I say about a composition that hurts my ears, that bores me? " lol
one gets the sense that he could other things like a god
the lifeless faces of those music students during the polonaise. i bet they were thinking they chose the wrong major having rubinstein pop off like that lmao
Would a present day photographer have given us a view of the whole perfortmer

Why all the close ups of 5 rt hand fingers and head and shoulders ?
They are in a small room.
The title is very misleading! Shouldn't it state: "Une leçon de musique!" Rubinstein also plays Schumann! xD
la vejez es mental
Polski pianista! I gra POLSKĄ MUZYKĘ!

Great... But it sounds better on the piano that is tuned.
Your criticism is misplaced: it's the recording that's the problem.

Chopin saves even bad recordings.
He explained that the piano he was playing on wasn't up to much.
le main a guache . . . boom trach

In Chopin Rubinstein days everything was agreeable but later Rubinstein complained at young drug addicts, disagreeable
