  • What does the music of social change sound like today? Highly lyrical and steeped in a tradition of addressing tough issues, rap and hip hop music gives a powerful platform to the voices of those with something to say. As a genre that has particular appeal among young people - a group whose influence will only continue to grow - rap and hip hop has the power to foster a more empathetic culture and be a force for positive change. So why not listen?
Acclaimed hip Hop artist Mathas dives into one of the most influential cultural forces today. Here he performs his hit song “Stone Cold Sober”. Perth rapper Mathas is a multi-faceted artist, difficult to pin down with any rigid genre boundaries. The themes woven into his music challenge status quo politics and business-as-usual, revealing a keen social conscience. A ferociously talented songwriter, producer, poet and performer, he was the first rap or electronic artist to win the WA Music Industry’s coveted Song of the Year award and is also a three-time winner of WAM Urban Act of the Year. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
