It's kind of amazing Queen Mary is still around today. There's obviously some problems right now, but considering it won't be too long before she reaches 100 years old, it's still impressive to me a ship as large and as old as her is still in relatively good shape for the time being.

A grand lady indeed. If I said it before, then bear with me, but you did her justice in this 2-part film. I cannot say anything more. 👏
Even though people today unfortunately cannot tell any ship from Titanic ("UGH"), Mary's fame has not wavered in any way I think. She's become a film star, a popular hotel that still sees big names and events to this day, and may even become a full on tourist attraction if Long Island's Queen Mary Island project comes to fruition. However, the ship herself has seen better days. Millions of dollars are needed to fully repair her; otherwise she could very well sink and later be scrapped. A haunting thought, but ever the optimist and seeing just how far she's come over a near 100 year period, I'm sure she'll survive just as she always had. Long live the Queen.
And now I go to finish cutting out the pages I printed for The Great Liners. A classic book of which I found a pdf online. You should get it if you don't have it already: it's a wonderful read. :)

Hello. Very interested to watch your video. My father was aboard HMS Curaçao when The Queen Mary struck. Stoker Kenneth Clarkson was in the engine room and trapped but as the ship twisted and sank, he found a route out. Covered by a film of oil he was cast adrift in the freezing North Atlantic. Thankfully he was rescued by an Irish fishing vessel but not before he witnessed so many of his crew mates slip quietly into the depths.
Every year l honour his fallen friends by placing painted rocks on memorials around Kent UK where he lived until an old man leaving 5 children and seven grand children.
I loved him, he was my hero

Minor errosr as per the QM tour, The escort and the QM used synchronized clocks to zigzag, the clock on the escort malfunctioned and got out of sync eventually the escort cut in front of the QM due to the clock drift. DUring WWII the QM was used for meetings while in port in Britain since the tech of the time would have made it hard to bug the ship. The QM Gift shop was where the Decision to invade Normandy was Made. The QM did not get Back all of her furnishings after the war, it was updated. The Furnishings were in a warehouse and provided to Long Beach and used to equip the Hotel rooms.

Degaussing neutralizes the magnetic signature of the ship. All steel-hulled ships are basically giant compass needles. Since it takes a few years to build a ship the size of RMS Queen Mary, the ship becomes magnetized from being stationary so long. There are also induced magnetic fields generated by moving through the earth's magnetic field. There are three main types of mine actuation: contact (think of the ones with the spiky things you see in the movies), acoustic (every ship has a sound profile), and magnetic (all steel ships have a magnetic field).
There are ways to mitigate the risk of mine actuation. For contact mines, it's simple: try to avoid them. For acoustic mines, there are ways to make the ship quieter. For magnetic mines, degaussing is the proscribed means.
I don't know if QM ever needed it, but sometimes, warships have to get "depermed" because the magnetic field becomes so permanent that even degaussing coils aren't able to work effectively. Deperming a ship requires a dry-docking and then giant cables are wrapped around the ship and they run current through the cable to demagnetize the ship. QM probably wasn't in troopship service long enough to require deperming, particularly because she was always underway.

My wife and I visited her a few years back on vacation, worth the price of admission, wandering her hallways is truly an experience since, at the time at least, the ship was still partially open as a hotel and it's amazing just how dark the ship is on the inside (vintage lighting) despite those being ostensibly rent-able rooms. The event venue is on the upper decks, and you could take the 'Ghost Tour' which *spoiler alert* includes a stop somewhere near the bow of the ship and has a mini special effects/water jets/strobe lights/random screams segment to commemorate the collision back in WWII.
The Soviet submarine was also open to be toured, and let's just say if you're tall or don't flex very well don't bother going in. They give you hard hats for a reason!

I used to see the QM docked across from the old Pierpoint Landing on Pier F in Long Beach Harbor during the late-1960s. This was before it was turned into a tourist attraction. It was so eerie at night, since the entire thing was pitch black and deserted, but there was always one light on shining from one of her portholes. I was also there with my grandmother on the day she sailed to her current final resting place. We watched her sail in with hundreds of smaller boats around her, and then she very, very, very, slowly came to a stop. At one point, it seemed like she had stopped, but I noticed that one of the portholes was still moving slightly in relation to a pole along the shore. She blew her horn when she finally stopped. I feel so privileged to have seen, literally, the very last yard she ever sailed. I was also on board for a school field trip during the 1970s when a streaker (remember those?) ran naked from bow to stern. When he got to the stern, he dove off and was killed in the fall.

You know, I love learning about this ship, and even though I've been to Long Beach a lot over the course of my life, I don't think I've ever been aboard the Queen Mary. It's wierd because I've seen it a lot, and I even cruised out of the Carnival terminal that shares a dock with the Queen Mary, but I've just never been aboard. I should do that someday because it has a fantastic history.

The ship truly has a aura of energy to it and you can practically feel the history of the ship all around you as you walk her decks. She is a amazing piece of history, and I hope the city of Long Beach always takes care of her.

Growing up, I used to go every weekend. To this day I still visit it from time to time (Well, pre-covid anyways), and it never loses it's appeal. I can't even really explain or describe why it's such an amazing experience, I guess it tugs at both the history buff, the art deco fanatic, and the nautical enthusiast parts of me.
If you can get a room on it, there's literally nothing that compares to a walk around the ship in the dead of night when no one's around, just immersing yourself in it. Plus, the bar is fantastic.

I have lived near the L.A. River most all my life. I can tell you that the lore of the great ship has always been palpable, even 12 miles inland where I grew up in Paramount (home of the Frank Zamboni ice rink machine). The rumor was that the L.A. River "Turns into the ocean" and the Queen Mary is there!" I made my first pilgrimage at the age of 12 on my bicycle, not knowing the journey would never end. I came to work for a company contracted for semiannual services aboard her for about 5 years and married my wife just off site of her. Now I live walking distance from her and see her about once a week on my walks with my wife and 12-year-old daughter. I like asking my kid what the ship's name is just to see if she remembers. They haven't sounded her horn about 2 years now, I wonder why. The other day a younger man and his family stopped and took a look at her at sunset with all her lights on and said in Spanish to his daughter, "Ay sta la Reina Maria" which means "There's the Quean Mary". "Reina Maria" has a nice ring to it.

There were different types of mines. You had to hit a contact mine which was designed to float just below the water surface. A magnetic mine could lie on the seabed and was triggered by the ships magnetic field. No actual contact required. Degassing cancled the field resulting in the ship floating over these mines safely. Contact mines though were still a thing...

There's been much written as of late on the Mary's dire straights in Long Beach. From the pandemic raging across the world leaving her closed for a year, to her lesse operator filing for bankruptcy, to the 200+ million dollar restoration needed to prevent her from deteriorating away, the ship is in dire need of support. I would urge anyone who loves the ship to pressure the city of Long Beach to preserve her, either by coughing up the money to restore her, or by drastically changing her operating model to be more like the Cumbres and Toltec with a nonprofit aiding in restoration and a for profit company handling the day to day operations of the ship. Towards the former, please look into Queen Mary International, since they are the closest to a non profit for the Mary in existance and (as far as I know) the only community group in talks with the city over fundraising and restoration of the old girl.

You forgot to mention that, after the ship became a hotel / university, part of the ship would be transformed into a museum for visitors. They removed all the machinery, boilers and even the original chimneys to make room for a museum. But this whole area that was freed from the machinery never became a museum. In fact, if they left the original equipment, it would have been an excellent museum. They had to compensate for the weight removed with the addition of sand to compensate for the ballast. The 3 chimneys that exist today are replicas.

Hi ! I thought you might like to know how the Queen Mary really got her name. She was supposed to have a name that ended in IA like the other Cunard liners. They were going to name her Queen Victoria. However , Cunard went to the king to rally their cause to get government funding . As the king was popular with parliament. They told the King they wanted to name the ship after Britain’s greatest Queen. To this the king replied without a bit of hesitation, “ My wife will be delighted.” There it is, true story.

This was a great pair of videos about the beautiful Queen Mary.
One correction though. 13:02, I recall that it was a DC-9 that flew over the Queen.
A flyover by a DC-3 had occured earlier during the Queen Mary's career and the Douglas Aircraft Company decided to commemorate that by flying over the Queen with a new at the time Douglas DC-9 when she was about to end her final voyage.

You said you didnt really know how degaussing coils work so here a crash course:
they're a bunch of wire running along the length of the ship supplied with a adjustable electric current, they're basically a giant electromagnet. to understand how they protect ships you need to have a basic understanding of how magnetic mines work, they detonate when they detect a strong enough distortion of the background magnetic field. A large piece of metal will create a large distortion on the background magnetic field, by running the coils you're counter acting the magnetic field distortion created by the metal hull, the conter acting can be adjusted since the BG magnetic field varies based on latitude and down south its "completely inverted". TLDR: You counter act the distortion on the magnetic field created by the ship so the mines wont go kaboom and turn you into smithereens.

Nice videos. However it is a mystery to me why the Queen Elizabeth, the largest ship in the world for many years, and in no way inferior to the Queen Mary and a huge component of the War effort, is so rarely talked about these days. There was little to choose between them in speed but it is true she never held the Blue Ribband as the Cunard chairman asked that the two Queens not compete against each other.
Probably her sad end compared to the Queen Mary' preservation has something to do with it.

Love this so much, it brought tears to my eyes. The story of Queen Mary and Olympic are my fav. So, I saw a video related with the current state of the Mary as an hotel in Cali. It looks like the company filed for bankrupt as many have done due to Covid. What is your opinion on this? Do you see a bright future for the Queen Mary?

Currently the operating company that runs the Queen Mary as a hotel has gone bankrupt, but I do not believe her continued existence is in danger because she is owned by the city of Long Beach, not the aforementioned company.

“She flew a 310ft pennant from her mast, 1ft for every 10 years in service”. That would then be 3ft surely if she sailed for 31 years?! Should it not be 10ft for every year? Other than that, a great video!
