Manufacture and testing of the Sd.Kfz. 2 "Kettenkrad" half-track motorcycle in 1943

- The Sd.Kfz.2 (Sonderkraftfahrzeug 2) is a half-track motorcycle with a single front wheel, better known as the Kleines Kettenkraftrad HK 101 (from German klein 'small', Ketten 'chains/tracks', and Kraftrad 'motorcycle'), shortened to Kettenkrad (pl. Kettenkräder).
It started its life as a light tractor for airborne troops. The vehicle was designed to be delivered by Junkers Ju 52 aircraft, though not by parachute. The vehicle had the advantage of being the only gun tractor small enough to fit inside the hold of the Ju 52, and was the lightest mass-produced German military vehicle to use the complex Schachtellaufwerk overlapped and interleaved road wheels used on almost all German military half-tracked vehicles of World War II.
Steering the Kettenkrad was accomplished by turning the handlebars: Up to a certain point, only the front wheel would steer the vehicle. A motion of the handlebars beyond that point would engage the track brakes to help make turns sharper. It was also possible to run the vehicle without the front wheel installed and this was recommended in extreme off-road conditions where speed would be kept low.
I do this for my own amusement but if you would like to support the channel consider www.buymeacoff...
The Kettenkrad was so useful the factory was kept running several years after the war.... good as a farm hauling vehicle.
Its ZÜNDAPP and it run till the 80s.
Nope...it was nsu@@dr.wilfriedhitzler1885
You are coming up with some amazing war footage. I've never seen this before. Thank you!
I want one for Chritsmas.

Good ol' Chritmas, the holiday for very bad spellers.

Just what is wanted for a small farm of some kind - what you use for hauling supplies to the barn, say.
One of them cost about 150.000 - 180.000 Dollar today
lol for a pile of rust. try again
@@Luftwoller in good condition
That's Gelandewagen expensive!
25 years ago you could find them for 9000$ (15-18.000DM) in the weekend newspaper "Reviermarkt".
By 1998 I also found an "Enigma" machine for 800DM (400$) and I didn't buy it because I was on my motorcycle.
Today, I would throw away the bike and carry the enigma 40km home by hand....
What was the sales price in 1943?
Молодцы немцы головастый народ!!! Собственные разработки и собственные возможности ( не крадут, не воруют, ни копируют все своё) !!!
А то
A heavy duty tow vehicle, I think. They would have some awesome pulling power.
Powered by an 1500cc Opel engine i believe.
They used them for towing Me 262's.
@@j.bradleyheck1589apparently when the fuel shortage became acute used 🫏 instead. Quite a cool buggy though
@@j.bradleyheck1589Not only for towing ME 262s.They made Service the whole Wartime on the German Airfields👍
@@martinjohnson9316Aside from the Carb, it is the same engine as used in the later Opel GT
Fantastic post! Seems that you have a nice stash of unique footage , keep it up!
Watching the production section i think to myself if only those fellows had a production line in the US ie. Willow run, they would quickly see how over the war was for them, and yet held so long....
Forget showing off in a Himalya Defender, i want to drive chic-fil-a in Ketten!
We could do with this vehicle in the UK, judging by the pot holes!
Here in Germany, too, our governments do not like to spend taxpayers money on our own native needs anymore.
True and the rain has led to a woeful state of repair
What you need is a T2 VW Kombi, preferably a splittie, it's fun when the arsehole in the MBW or Audi six inches from your back bumper falls into the huge deep pothole your 15" high profile tyres and torsion bar swing arm with rubber bump stop suspension has just laughed at 😂
After all it was designed for use on roads the UK government had been maintaining with Lancaster bombers and the US 8TH.
@@61diemai same in Italia, but the EU bearaucrats will gladly spend money on random climate acts and immigrants!
I really like this little vehicle.
Thanks for posting this.

They'd still be useful in farming or ranching applications. It would be popular in Sturgis, lol.
Exactly what they where used for after the war, recently one was found with a converted hitch and plow
So advanced technology that’s fantastic
amazing footage ,thanks
Note the Kettenkrad race track in the end ... the precursor to modern-day lawnmower races
Die Dinger sind heute noch hammer-gut
I have seen these in action they are great!
Deberían sacar al mercado estos excelentes vehículos.
Just an awesome vehicle
For this Time was the Kettenkrad a good all Terrain Vehicle
Great video
A superior race makes superior machinery!!

Defeated by chosen race
That’s the mentality that makes it difficult for people like 👍🏼 that who don’t have the ability for self respect and empathy to understand what is wrong and what’s going to change when people don’t know what’s right in their own way to make it better than others who don’t understand what they don’t have and what they can’t control or what they’re supposed to be capable of
The amount of failed German tanks and weird prototypes combined with questionable reliability would like to say otherwise.

Захоплююсь німецькими технічними засобами часів війни. Шкода, що ми так мало знаємо про творців цих технічних див.
A lot of the technicians went to Gulags & most were swept up by "Operation Paperclip" ,e.g. Werner von Braun !
Kettenkrad wurde bei NSU Werken in Neckarsulm gebaut, heute ist es eine Fabrik von Audi. Die letzten originalen NSU 1:45 Hallen wurden 2007 abgerissen. Google Earth: maps.app.goo.gl/Wyt5rqigqFRfY9dC6?g_st=ic
Gulags is - Administration.
@@j.bradleyheck1589, the Gulag was created for political reasons. The Germans were used after the war to rebuild houses, factories, etc. Scientists and engineers were involved in the production process
I saw this at a museum in Norway
NSU werke, aktiengesellschaft, Neckarsulm....same plant that made my 2 NSU prinz cars...i had a 1959 and a 1960....although the engines on the kettenkraftrad were Opel olympia engines, the manufacture overall was by NSU
looks like they are painted dark green or dark grey, but they look awesome!!!
"Girls Last Tour": an anime of 2 girls using a Kettenkrad to wander a world destroyed by war.
That's an absolute Masterpiece Anime
Very cool.
I knew an old guy back in the early 80s that had a yard full of antique motorcycles as well as a museum named Bergan who traded an old Sportster for one of these.I asked him if he would sell it but the $5,000 price tag was too rich for my blood🙄
Great video ,i wish it was longer with more stages of the poduction !
I saw and some women in the start of the video and pushing them in the production line at 0:28 - 0:37 !!
WOW German workers on a production line . Gosh those quality controls levels would have been through the roof back then.
Masters of the Universe!
Даже звука тогда не было. Теперь ты такой это телефона смотришь😮
Just what you need to get to work riding over all the other traffic .
The only halftracks advantage is they are cool.
I want one.🥰
I like the model where it drives like a car but will float on water and is motorized.
What was the sales price in 1943?
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
What a Gang 😂 Fantastic Material 👍
I'd love to have one. Be probably the only German war equipment I could afford, except maybe a kubelwagen
Fun buggy
The Koolest bike ever built😮😂❤❤❤
Um, Why is it reversed Left-To-Right? Or is that Right-To-Left???????
That testing in the latter half looks like a TOUGH job, but, someone HAS to do it. Most excellent footage.
I’m curious, do you ever have a sound track ? It would seem, if any, this film would have had a sound track. Of course, I can make vroom vroom noise while watching.
fur Deutschland !
Is today's ATV better than kettenkrad ?
That would be interesting to see. Obviously, each would have its own strengths and weaknesses. I think current use of ATVs in the military is for their speed and maneuverability, the kettenkrad for its cross country (ie. Russian mud) abilities. Both routinely use trailers as well, so not sure what load limits would be for each.
I’d say the comparison is nonsensical since they both perform really well in their respective, different niches. There’s no competition here.
Kettenrad is much more industrial.
Can a quad tow a multi ton artillery piece and 300 kg of ammo ??
Can a Kettenrad go where a quad can ??
No, not as Kool😮😂
That looks lit and funny af

According to an American military study, it would have been better if the front wheel didn't get on it.
Ugoku, ugoku...
I'd give a kidney to own one.
OVER 8000 pices bueld!
Непонятно зачем ему переднее колесо очевидно что это декоративная функция 🤔
Why the motorcycle front? Pointless addition to an otherwise solid vehicle.
I think it was for fine tune the steering without bothering the track clutch system. The manual of Kettenkrad stated that if the terrain is really rough with large stones or tree stumps, the front wheel should be removed and then drive the vehicle exactly like a full-blown tracked vehicle.
Great machine but why not just build a cheaper side-by-side? That is all the Jeeps were back then.
DAS OPEL
It looks dangerous, like it could turn over and pin the riders under it.
1:12 Oh noes, who could withstand such an assault 😼

Покруче квадриков нынешних...

Why don't China start producing these instead of those stupid electric cars!
And then they came to Russia....
Whats even the point of the front wheel
Change direction. Making turns. Obvious.
I wondered the same thing. Maybe on dry ground it offers more nuanced steering ability. Or also approaching a near vertical incline it may help roll the front end upward before the tracks make contact? Not sure. But it would have to have a differential steering system on the tracks, so the front wheel isn't the prime mover for steering.
For minor changes in direction. For large ones it engage the tracks. Tank Museum has a very nice video about it: th-cam.com/video/o2ZiUihdXf8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=JI6T62fVIQCAJ8hj
The same function with half-track.
Helps to prevent flip over after driving over raised obstacles. You can take it off and the steering works just fine.
Don’t see much slave labour….funny that.
Bravo Germans
