Mike Kinsella's work over the years with his various musical endeavors has been nothing short of foundational, from early days with Cap'n Jazz right up until recently with American Football's unforeseen and excellent second act. Even with his long list of contributions to course-setting bands, Kinsella never reveals more of his internal world than he does with the softly drawn songs of his long running solo project Owen. With new album The Avalanche, he delivers a set of Owen songs that are the most straightforward and unguarded the project has ever been.
To record The Avalanche, Kinsella reunited with producer Sean Carey (Bon Iver, Peter Gabriel) and engineer Zach Hanson (The Tallest Man On Earth, Waxahatchee) and decamped to snow-covered Hive Studio in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, just far enough away from the routines and distractions of daily life to really focus on the process. Echoes of the lo-fi bedroom balladry that defined early Owen come through on the heart-crushing "I Should Have Known," familiar open-tuned acoustic guitars and weary vocals supported by glowing string arrangements. "On With The Show" is bounding and upbeat, with a jangly instrumental standing in stark contrast to lyrics about crushing failure. KC Dalager from Now, Now contributes guest vocals to several songs, most notably the glacially paced album centerpiece "Mom and Dead."
Easily the most intense Owen album, The Avalanche is also the most beautifully crafted. Kinsella goes deeper than ever before, with self-reflection so painfully blunt it's sometimes difficult to look at head on. It's a guided walk through one of life's more difficult chapters, resulting in nine of the best Owen songs ever penned and an album that's as heartbreaking as it is magnificent.

"Have my cake and fuck it too" caught me off guard
This is without a doubt the saddest, most painful, most raw, and most emotional album I’ve ever heard in my life. It’s clear and obvious that these songs come from real-life experiences. And yet, simultaneously, this is a piece of art that speaks to me. That touches my very soul. I feel the creativity, the honesty, the emotion, and the feeling of these songs like nothing else. It’s stunning and beautiful. For those of us who respect and admire music like this, this album is a gift. To the uninitiated one might dismiss it as simply morose, boring, or uninteresting. Which is a sad thought. Thank you, Mike, for releasing this collection of songs to the world and bringing us all into the journey of your life, even if for a moment.

It's not often I see a new album and immediately think "I was here when this came out," knowing that it will, if nothing else, eventually be the soundtrack to a portion of my life.
I feel you
Pairing Mike with Sean Carey to produce this was the best thing that could've happened for Owen's sound. The richness of the production is like bon iver's second album but with Owen's usual written wit
Sean was also involved with The King of Whys, in case you weren't aware. But yes agreed, a great pair of musicians to be working together.
I like when Owen songs get a big "production" because it's a nice contrast to the stripped-down roots of the songs, but I always found his self-produced stuff to be really endearing in it's DIYness.

I think THIS Is the magnum opus of MIKE Kinsella. Brilliant!;, and, I actually am a legit mathematician. american football | [ LP1] is tremendous; and, The Avalanche is right up there as one of the best artistic records that Mike has been involved in the creation of. Of which, Owen, his solo project -- this is is the pinnacle of Owen.
Thank you Mike, you have brought meaning to my life again... i have been listening to your music (AF as well) for almost more than 14 years now. Every song brings me back to very specific memories through out my life. Thank you for transporting me to those events in my life and make me re-live them, even for a few seconds. Looking forward to a new chapter in my life with my wife who will be giving birth in July. Can’t wait to have my daughter listen to your music. :)
Been almost 3.5 years, and yet the feels are still so strong. I think mid 2020 has left its mark on everyone, and this was my soundtrack to that summer. Thanks Mike!

My favorite part of this gorgeous record is just after the 42-minute mark when the layered acoustic loop strongly recalls Track 01 “That Which Wasn’t Said” from Owen’s first LP. Then those lyrics come, “Cheers to the bottle, the dried blood on the floor...” which more than any other final Owen track is soaked in devastating completion. The whole journey in context makes me cry on every earnest listen - it’s a terribly tragic record but pierces to the bone. Cheers to all the mates and Owen fans and how his music does wonders for marking the seasons.
I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who heard "That Which Wasn't Said"
Oh hey, other people who noticed the similarity. At first, I thought this was going to be the final Owen album, so I thought that similarity between the ending of "I Go, Ego" and "That Which Wasn't Said" was a beautiful way to bring the Owen albums full circle. It still is, but I also get the impression from Mike on social media that more Owen albums are coming, so at least this won't be the last of them. But it's a beautiful way to end The Avalanche.
The final track on At home with Owen is One of these days , and it too always brings tears to my eyes the starkness of the piano gets me every time its in my top 3 favorite Owen songs.
Beautiful album...I've listened to all of his albums to death and have certain memories attached to each one, so a new addition like this always feels like a big deal (his music really captures the passing of time). I'm on my second listen and loving it! I thought his last album was one of his best he's done, but this may even top it. At times reminds me of I do Perceive (one of my fave Owen albums) but with a more modern production and extra shoegaze influence.
Totally reminds me of I Do Perceive too, couldn’t agree more it’s like a modern version - marking the seasons for us fans yet again - circular but not quite the same. Cheers mate.

Met Mike Kinsella in Philly when American football performed. i cant believe this album came out of the pandemic! Mike is a vocal Beast and so real its just a sigh of relief to hear some genuine good music.Mike is my spirit animal :)
One person doesn't know what a masterpiece is
Oh man. "I Go, Ego" sounds like a beautiful song that would be written and composed for the ending of a great movie. But that aside, it's a beautiful way to end the album, on a melancholic but also hopeful note, giving the album thematic closure. Incredible album. One of his best, and probably the one with the strongest thematic throughline.
Putting this on while cleaning my wife’s and my room getting ready to work on my new clothing brand , thank you Owen for making real honest music. You’re beautiful melodies have been with me ever since I was 19, being 25 now and having to go through crappy jobs here and there. Now trying to build a dream so I don’t have to anymore, I hope life goes better for you man. Going through bouts of depression myself your music is really something I can truly relate to when you explain those feelings no one else understands.
God bless you Owen, you’ve helped me out a lot. And I hope you know, you deserve goodness too.

It's not often an album makes me cry on first listen. This is just what I needed.
There's something so hard cutting about women vocalists overlayed with Owen's vocals. It gets me every time. Another one is Everyone's Asleep In The House But Me.

Yes! Conor Oberst commonly pairs his voice with a very "tropical
/ heated/ sensual" sounding female voice ... very breathy/ sexy .... It works wonders. Soo happy Mike caught onto that. Maybe he will start doing it regularly with her.

Mike Kinsella has made yet another amazing album. Sonically I just love the way this one sounds, especially the way he's incorporate the clean ethereal guitars. Reverb was essential for this. :-)

I don't know if this hits the highs of L'ami de Peuple, but for my money this is the most solid full length Mike has been a part of.
Really did you like L'ami de peuple that much? It wasn't my favourite by long stretch he's one of my favorite artists but I like New Leaves the best
@@louisyoung4991 Yeah a lot of prople find it forgettable which is so weird to me. I Got High, Love Is Not Enough, Coffin Companions, Who Cares, Where Do I Begin, and Vivid Dreams are some of his best songs. I think I like it because the lyrics are a bit more mundane than his earlier stuff and I was already boring by the time I got around to Owen.
The bass in "On With The Show" reminds me of "Alma Matters". F*ck.

I’d also assume Dead For Days, Wanting And Willing, and I Go, Ego are all DADF#AD or some variation of it. Maybe DADGAD or something. I haven’t been playing guitar for long so I might be way off, but it sounds accurate and based on his track record of tunings under Owen it’s not unlikely.
