You are an incredible teacher. At 62 , female started strength training after retirement. Lost 100 lbs in a yr. Now 72 with arthritic knees and need to lose weight I put on. You have motivated me so so much. Will start your basic training mastering the 5 out of 6 basic moves. I will watch your videos over any Netflix HANDS down. U are a blessing to young and old who have the sense to listen and learn. God bless .
Whoa wait. Hang on a sec. I struggle with the clean in getting my wrist under it but you're the first person I've seen do it with a supinated grip like that at the bottom and not just a straight overhand or neutral grip. I'm definitely going to give this a shot tomorrow. UPDATE: IT WORKED. I find it a lot more natural this way. I bang my forearm a little bit but as I get more proficient that should go away.
I can't believe how good this guy is. You've taught me how to kettlebell swings two weeks ago. I feel confidant enough to try this today, so I searched for your advice - thank you loads Mark. Hope all is well.
I just got into using kettlebells a few weeks ago, and I really appreciate all your videos. You do a great job explaining the mechanics of the motions. Thank you.
Enjoying your no nonsense, no fluff, no filler, straight to the point lessons mate. Best on YT at the moment. When are you getting some strength and conditioning programs out there mate? Will gladly pay for the privilege. Thanks.
I ordered a 30lb kb and that's what I got. Overnight shipping, totally unexpected for something of this weight. Price was great. It is exactly as described.
So many great tips in one short video = perfect instruction for trainers of all levels. I've used kettlebells for years and I learned where I was compromising my movement quality.
Stumbled across your videos a couple months ago. Been following you ever since. I enjoy your simplicity of explaining techniques, which i need. Thank you. Keep the info and your video coming out.
Thanks for this video. I'm starting my kettlebell journey with a 45 lb kb. I took a long break because I didn't understand the technique on how to properly clean kettlebells, I kept banging up my wrist and arms
Loving these vids, you're really helping me out getting into kettlebells. I have a question for you: I'm a software dev working from home, in cycles of 25 minutes dev work, 5 minutes break. What 16kg kettlebell routine would you recommend for those 14 x 5 minutes throughout the day? M 33yo 70kg. Thanks!
@@MarkWildman Similar situation here. Work from home and work out sporadically throughout the day, mostly KBs, push ups, & pull ups. I'm systematic-ish but would be interested to hear any thoughts on programming.
Try this: 6 one arm swings, then clean it to the rack position and do 4 deep squats. Drop and do pushups, one leg pushups if you can. Then repeat on other side. Should be able to get in a couple of rounds.
so I tried these today, it has been a while since I did them in crossfit, so my technique was a bit lost. The kettlebells kept slamming back on my wrists. I tried the few ways I remembered but couldn't get it right every time. Sorry to be so long winded, but could you do a video or explain proper technique so it does't fall back on your wrist?
Nick Noyes Keep the elbow glued to your body and push your hand through the handle once its about to flip over. Also your problem suggest that u are lettin the kb travel to far away from your body. You have to keep it as close as possible and "tame the arc". Try puttin a newspaper in your armpit and dont let it drop. This will help u to keep the elbow close to your body. Hope this helps abit at least...
Hi out of all the kettlebell tutorials yours are straight to the point and infomative. Im 50 , started on 16kgs, one thing with this particular exercise is that the kettlebell smacks onto the 'outer facing' part of my wrist, which hurts after a while. Is this normal. Many thanks.
Nice and to the point! Thanks! Quick question - If I'm doing two arm KB swing with a 20kg KB (and it's just the right weight), what would you recommend for the clean? Should I also do it with the 20kg or do I need to go lighter? I'm doing this at home and currently only have the one KB. Should I work with what I have (fewer reps probably) or invest in a lighter KB (16kg maybe)?
Great Video Mark. Would only question why you suggest the thumb should be pointing toward the body in the swing phase. Most pro sport kettlebell athletes have the thumb facing forwards or at worst sideways to minimise the turn needed to get the kb in the right position for the catch before the rack and to keep the elbow as close to the body as possible. Maybe you're promoting a harder style where efficiency in this area is not the goal?
Correct, efficiency is less important in hard style, but he's also mentioned in another video he does it for the safety of the elbow on the back swing, so there's no chance of hyper extending if you end up swinging it too far.
Thanks for the consistent amazing output Mark! Subbed! When performing cleans, im having trouble feeling engagement in my glutes and hamstrings. Im feeling engagement in my lats. Is this normal? Or is my technique sloppy?
Hi Mark. Absolutely phenomenal channel! Regarding the clean, is there a major difference if one were to finish each clean by returning the kettlebell to the floor for each rep? Also, regarding the above method, the KB tends to bounce on my arm when I bring it to rack position. Any ideas as to why? Thank you so much!
A dead clean (where it touches the ground each time) is a different excercise that the swing clean. I teach the swing clean first because I think it’s safer for people with back injuries. And I just assume everyone has had a back injury as common practice.
Regarding the bounce. It’s probably about finess. You probably are accelerating all the way up. The needs to be a deceleration. Accelerate then decelerate (the finess) to avoid the banging arm
You mentioned it's effort just to keep the kettlebell in the rack position - bit of a weird idea, but would it be a viable exercise just to hold it there for as long as possible after cleaning it? Would this be bad for you in any way or would it help with stability/strength?
Excellent idea. In competition training you do this. 6 reps / min so 10 sec for each rep. 5 min per side. Then 7 / min Build to 20 / min. An advanced time under tension idea if you are limited on kettlebells. If you have all the weights. Then a simple time efficient idea
Mark (love your videos), I’ve been trying for the last several months to master the single bell clean (no coach due to covid/money) with thumb pointed back, with very little success. However, I seem to be quite decent at cleans when I point my thumb forward (more like you’d see in competition doing double bells). Is there anything wrong with this or is it simply a matter of preference? I know, do it more better, but I was just wondering why. Thanks so much.
Although you state the way the lift should be done I still find that you will get a little pain on the bone of the wrist and forearm until you completely master that clean
I have a question. How can i reduce the impact as the kettlebell sometimes end up hitting my shoulder. Mind that the kettlebell is bigger in diameter than my forearm.
You keep mentioning doing “kettlebell for 10 minutes”. Do you mean 1 specific kettlebell exercise or are you talking about multiple ones for 10 minutes?
new to KB's here! (thanks corona!). I have been doing swings for about two weeks now, today I finally learned how to KB snatch without it banging my arm, but I can't figure it out for the clean?
I had this problem and found I was waiting too late to start bending my elbow. It looks like the kettlebell stays a bit closer to your body than in a snatch movement. Please note that I am a complete beginner though, got a 12Kg before UK lockdown - I might be wrong
What worked for me was paying attention to the twist. Making sure my backswing was ‘Thumb To Bum’ and then wrapping the bell around my arm as it approaches the top rather than throwing the bell over.
I found that starting the recovery early helps. Almost like trying to clean it to your hips keeping the elbow close to the body rather than pulling it up to the shoulder

Yeah. You have to learn to decelerate. It’s a process. Expect bruises for 2 weeks at least before your brain figured it out

Would there be more cross body benefit to run this as just the ballistic clean without the press if you're already doing Get-Ups for a grind?
ALL UP IN YOUR BIDNESS
Mark, is there value in performing the mid pull exercise to get better at the swing clean?
Hi Mark, thanks for this simpler explanation to a complex exercise. Just one thing though, do the knees lock when you straighten the legs?
In hard style yes. In soft style.... maybe
Just wondering … when you say do 10 sets of swings… is that per arm? I’m a 56 year old newbie
You mentioned it's effort just to keep the kettlebell in the rack position - bit of a weird idea, but would it be a viable exercise just to hold it there for as long as possible after cleaning it? Would this be bad for you in any way or would it help with stability/strength?

You can walk around holding it in the rack like that too. A lot of people do that in addition to farmer's walk.

It’s a preference. It’s about hip movements. You can do both or either.
Just be careful of your elbow on the way back, since it could potentially hyper extend if you push too far on the back swing.
Would you train this with volume cycles like the snatch or emom like the swing?
What’s the weight of your kettlebell used in this video?
Ok this is great content
Hey Mark, random question... do you work with private clients? I'm in the LA area, new to kettlebelling... and would love some help
Yes I do. Interested in coming in?

I can’t seem to get the clean down and it’s frustrating as shit. It seems to be making my forearms right as well.
do you have a lighter bell to start with until you get the rotation?

Although you state the way the lift should be done I still find that you will get a little pain on the bone of the wrist and forearm until you completely master that clean
Mark, my lower back thanks you X
do you pull the shoulder once the bell reaches your belt?
There is a little shoulder shrug in there
Don't let your upper arm disconnect when going back down. We call that "casting the bell."
👍
Legend thank you!
I have a question. How can i reduce the impact as the kettlebell sometimes end up hitting my shoulder. Mind that the kettlebell is bigger in diameter than my forearm.
