- Sri Lanka is constructing a $15 billion smart city in the ocean, called Port City Colombo. Port City Colombo will be composed of five unique districts on reclaimed land adjacent to the main city. It will hopefully boost the Sri Lankan economy, serve as a vibrant new smart city, and improve the quality of life in Colombo. However, there is fear over China’s participation and doubt that the project will succeed.

*As an indian i really want srilanka to grow & m not saying this just because we are close neighbours but because of deep cultural ties that we have but lemme tell you this is the first step of colonialism.. when i was making my project on srilanka China relations i was surprised to see what's going on there. i don't know why they are doing this but we are going to witness modern colonisation. I'm from Sri Lanka, and I can easily guess that there is going to be some funding issue and that Sri Lanka will take a loan from China. In the end, Sri Lanka will end up giving China the port city as compensation for the loan.
As per some news portals , Sri Lankans need a passport to visit the Colombo city port .

Glad people are now aware of debt-trap diplomacy. For years you would hear about how great China was, choosing to build up Africa rather than exploit it like the west. But their infrastructure projects largely employed Chinese labourers, used Chinese businesses, and would work the local workers very hard, giving them few rights. It was basically getting a country to borrow and pay for a bunch of things to enrichen China and its people, at a high rate which was a win win win for China. Cause either they made a lot of money on the loan, or got assets for cheap. All while making their own companies richer.
Of course theres the history of the IMF as well. But i think few ever called them saints, they just ignored their actions. China just copied that model and pushed it a little bit further
I dont believe this city will reach their expectation, Sri lanka just don't have a good market and economic that can support it.

That would mean there are entities from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh Willing to invest here already. The FDI would be very very slow due to the poor market performance of SL and the pandemic. So most of the investments would come from China. There is potential but there is no hope.

Sri lanka building a world class modern city, its not just for domestic use business will be done by competitive currencies, policies are been made to attract foreign investments not local investments.As you say while Sri lanka doesnt have a such a Economy to support but there are billions next to us India ,Pakistan and one of the best performer in whole world Bangladesh.Sri Lanka will be the gate for thos Billions of people.

China is a fast growing economy country , there are more than 10 similar projects are operational in China . In my city Dalian , there is a biggest sea airport of China in under construction .
China is not interesting of taking other land , No need to , the economy growth is benefit for all of us . We know how important of infrastructure is , when we were poor , our govt invested huge amount of money into infrastructure . Even though , these projects wont get benefit in the next 20 years , Nobody in the world would gave loan to desert road , mount road , sea bridge. Our govt has long version to do it 30 years ago , we could see how this project plaid important role today . How this projects lead business , economy growth from Sichuang ,Chongqing ,Guizhou , where surround by 100km big mountains. The capital city of Sichuan ,Chengdu is becoming the biggest laptop , electronic production base in the world .
Without transportation and infrastructure , Nothing will happens . Colonize sounds stupid to me , without infrastructure and people , you will lose all money . we are hard working people , the future is in our own hands. When the city raise up to a super economy hub , The benefit will forward to all people who live in this city.

Authorized persons may enter Sri Lanka only. Bridge or tunnel or airport neighboring countries have and should be respected. I do not think that the way things are, the Indians do not respect the borders of Sri Lanka. Tunnels and bridges are the biggest business there is today and if you don't believe it, enter the tunnels and bridges Web pages and look at prices and number of vehicles per year and you will see how much money is being moved.
It's obvious that Sri Lanka can't afford this. At this point am just waiting for Sri Lanka to become a province of China.

Sri Lanka doesn't have to afford this. A private company is investing $1.4 billion to build the infrastructure, then that private company and the government of Sri Lanka will own land which can lease the land to other investors. The government of Sri Lanka can earn billions of dollars by leasing the land that it will own without even spending a penny.
And even if the whole project fails it's the private company that will lose $1.4 billion and the Sri Lanka will not lose a penny. It's beyond me how some people can be this illiterate not to understand the difference between a debt funded project vs a 100% private investment.

All of the port city is made of mobsters of sri Lankan, and also most of the investors of it are basically Chinese. Port city is just a part of Chinese silk route project. And it will be named as an indipendnt country like Hong Kong after it finished with construction.

If the government and the investors of port city can design ALL its buildings so that flower bushes could drape down, the port city would take the image of the hanging gardens of Babylon. It would be a wonder of Asia and would be a a good tourist attraction for Sri Lanka.
Both hambantota and mattala ports are built for future Chinese military bases. Everyone in sri lanka knows this. But people support this because China is keeping India and Americans out of the country. India Secretly funded the ltte terrorists that tried to separate the north of the country so India could annex that land. Americans supported the ltte so they can build bases in the North. But with Chinese and Russian help Sri Lankan army defeated the ltte. From then Americans and Indians have become very hostile towards Sri Lanka. And Sri Lanka came to the Chinese side. This is what's behind Sri Lankas Pro China stance. And China needs Sri Lanka for securing trading routes in Indian ocean as India is a enemy of China. So both countries need each other.

One point of contention however:
The "debt-trap diplomacy" narrative is inaccurate. Whilst Sri Lanka has a - major - dollar debt problem, this is largely a result of its widespread sale of International Sovereign Bonds (ISBs), some at quite high interest rates, and successive governments living well beyond their means (even spending in rupees to some extent requires USD as the Central Bank tries so keep the exchange rate stable). The Chinese loan (via EXIM bank) that financed the Hambantota Port was at concessionary interest rates, and servicing that particular loan wasn't onerous at the time. Servicing the ISB debt (with relatively high interest rates and short maturity periods - i.e. principal had to be repaid in full in only a few years) was what was onerous and was part of the reason why the Sirisena/Wickremesinghe government had sold a majority stake in the Hambantota Port to China. It's not as simple as the New York Times article on "coughing up a port" suggested.

Every country deserves at least 1 smart/financial hub that gives boost to it's economy. Specially poor and isolated countries in Asia, Africa and South America, Investment will always come as this whole world wealth and cash inflow is not something we consider it to be, majority of the world's wealth is in computers and/or online with a few percentage of wealth in cash, wealth was and will always expand and that's why these countries deserve a chance in this global economy that'll boost it's revenue, living standards and will be able to provide for their people. Everyone deserves to live a happy life.

Sri lanka is not debt trap to china its only 10% china hold from whole debt of Srilanka.while Japan 10%, India 2%, 13% asian development bank ,9% world bank, 40% international sovereign bonds . So keeping only 10% to china is not a trap ,but sri lanka have a debt issue while all loans after 2011 are on high interest rates because sri lanka is a upper middle income nation and 40% of International sovereign bonds have higher interest rates and short period of paying.So sri lanka needs to pay 4 billion USD annually and 2020 sri lanka paid 5.7 billion usd trying to get rid of little bit but with covid 19 spread hit tourism industry will loose 40% of our foreign currency income positioning sri

There are no such a thing here.Hambantota port 70 % given to 3 chinese companies for 99 year lease, and Sri lanka established a industrial park and Export economic zone just including the port.so most of the local companies now attracted to Hambantota and some foreign investments as well And becoming a export and industrial hub for Sri lanka, and we using the port develop by china 70%, 30% still sri lankan.Man there are Indian projects also happening in colombo on 99 leased for an example Sapphire Residences in colombo is a indian company and Tata about build Hotels and some luxury apartments also on 99 leased lands. And India,USAnd Japan developing western terminal of colombo port as a joint venture for 99 years also just besides colombo port city.The port city also will be leasing its land for 99 years and china got 20 hectares already.Port city calling already for investments others can come and invest here.That doesnt mean we will be a colony of yours.
