Georgia Caney -mooooost embarassing moment was when I first moved here I was amazed why everywhere I go people are calling my name “Can”. My first encounter when I was in last seat on the bus and a new passenger asking something to the bus driver and he keeps repeating calling me “Can, can, can” and I go over to the driver and respond “Excuse me, are you calling me??? How’d you know my name?” And everyone are staring at me with their puzzled face til one foreigner explained what they are talking about and that its just a respond of the bus driver to passenger who’s asking to stop him over to a specific bus stop 😅😭

Singlish is so uniquely Singapore. In my opinion these “add on” words like la...le...hor...seen to be a hidden or unexpected form of expression that create a more approachable, friendly type of communications.
Example, a guy is not too happy with another man in a shop, in proper English that guy could yelled
“Hey man, don’t do that!” It sounded very serious.
But if it was a Singaporean, he would have said..
“He bro, don’t like that le” immediately the whole communication would sound less threatening yet able to carries the message across.
Singapore is a melting pot for many different races, languages that includes many many sub dialects. Singlish was never taught in school but it can be heard everywhere and from any person. It had became a way of life here and serves it’s purpose well to bonds our social fabric and like I said before, its uniquely Singapore.

I think it would sound more like “eh bro, don’t liddat lah”. It may sound informal and less threatening but at the same time it also sounds a little rude (I’m Singaporean) especially when you use singlish to talk to someone older or someone with a higher position than you.

Ikea is E-kea as pronounced in Swedish. Singaporeans pronounce many words wrong but that one we got it right. Similarly we also pronounce Iraq correctly (E-raq) and not I-raq as how Americans pronounce them.

  • @Isaactan90
    @Isaactan90 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Hor can also be used in the middle of the sentence and it serves a different function.
“Please hor... you can also be very difficult.”
In the example above, “please hor” has the same function as “look who’s talking”. And hor has a different tone in the middle than at the end of the sentence. It’s usually lower.

Random person: you are very pretty
    Me: thank you so much!
    Random person: are you sing?
Me: no no unfortunately I can’t sing
Random person: no I meant are you sing?
Me: ( thinking to myself maybe Singaporeans refer to themselves as Sing as a short form or something) No I am not Singaporean
Random person: I am saying are you sing? Like balle balle sing
Finally realised he was asking if I am Singh aka panjabi!!!!
    P.S I am not panjabi 🤦🏻‍♀️

I had a British colleague who stayed here for years. Once, I said something to a Singaporean colleague and he asked me why I said. I repeated to him and he said, no, that's not what you said because I didn't understand anything earlier. So I had to recall and use the exact words. It's all English, yet in such a Singaporean way that he just didn't get it the first time. I had switched to "normal" English unconsciously when speaking to him. Hahaha.

Loved this video! I have 2 different accents that I use. The first is my regular Singlish accent that I use daily in Singapore, and the 2nd is my "fake" English accent which I use when I speak to non-Asian English speakers. On one of my recent trips, I was chatting with a lady on the train from London to Leeds and using my fake English accent. Halfway through, my mom calls from Singapore and I switch to my regular accent. The lady was shocked! But she loved how different it was and requested for me to continue talking to her in Singlish for the rest of the journey. I taught her as much as I could, and as a Singaporean, it always makes me happy to see others enjoy this unique aspect of our tiny little country. Hope your time in Singapore was a good one and wish you a safe journey back!

Lol yeah personally I just prefer Singaporeans to speak in Singaporean accent rather than trying to do a British accent. It’s more natural and less forced. For example if i were to speak in a Singaporean accent it would sound really strange lol

I'm half Singapore/Australian, grew up as an expat so I used to have a Brit accent. Took my Canadian boyfriend to Singapore after New Year and had to explain EVERYTHING. Switching from a Singlish accent to Aussie for every little thing gets exhausting. But bloody hell, when my relatives talk to him and he had this blank "i know theyre speaking English but i have no idea what they mean" look on his face was absolutely hilarious.

Singlish is such a unique language , I adore the Lah's Loh's and Hor's 😍😍 just add it to the end of your sentence and somehow they understand what you're saying

this was hilarious!! as a returning singaporean i find myself in some of these situations too, although i understand quite a bit of singlish. my strangest moments are definitely when salespeople would ask where i’m from, because both my english and chinese sound un-singaporean (i grew up in china in an international school, so my english is kinda american/western and my chinese is well, chinese.)

Totally can relate to this video! I remember when I thought “shiok” is “shocked” instead of “delicious”
I was at mcdonald’s and the mcnuggets adv said that the nuggets are “shiok”
I mean.... how could nuggets be shocked? 😂

I’m almost 32 years old & I lot of people think I’m still a student, a couple of years ago when I started a new Job, I was working at night time & work colleagues were coming up to me asking ‘how was school today’, I’m like what?!, when I tell people my real age most are gobsmacked & stunned, the closest anyone has come to guessing my age is 25. I was looking at a old passport photo from 2005 the other month & I thought I still look the same as I did 13 years ago!.

“hor” is like “right?” in a way. like after adding “hor” at the sentence, one is asking for some sort of agreement

I think the reason why they think you're so young is because of your height. Many Asians think of European adults as tall so if you're around 4’ 11” as you say, then it kind of messes with our assumptions and we assume you're kids at that height.
