Hello everyone! I wanted to say thank you for all of you who watched this video- I am so happy so many of you got something from it. I just attempted to get some tickets for the London show on Maya’s European tour with little success so if by any chance anyone here has a spare ticket they would be willing to sell to me I would be extremely grateful!! Thanks so much, and if you managed to snag a ticket I hope you have a lovely time :)
Someone should post a link to this video into every comment section of every "reaction video" to Therese. People don't know and they should know. This puts it all together beautifully.
Thank you so much. I agree there has been a lot of content made about the video with very little interest into the meaning of it, or research done whatsoever which is a bit frustrating. Im really glad you enjoyed my take :)
this analysis is so well written and really helped me further understand the deeper meaning of the song/video! i only recently discovered the lyrics were based on the painting which is wild because i feel like i’ve been seeing people talk about the song everywhere, just for the wrong reasons i guess. it’s so frustrating to see how peoples reactions to the x rated video exactly prove the point hawke is trying to make and yet people still manage to misinterpret or blatantly ignore the message. anyway i really loved this essay, well done :))
Thank you so much. I share your frustrations. The most I heard of it when I was writing it were a massive dump of ‘reaction videos’ which had little to say and just wanted to piggyback off something popular which had shock factor. It’s a real shame that so many people intentionally ignored it’s meaning or weren’t interested in it in that way. I’m really happy you were interested in my analysis! Thank you so much for watching and commenting, it means a lot. :)
over a year late, but i've been listening to therese a lot again recently, and this really captured a lot of my thoughts about the song and music video. i really like how you also incorporated blue hippo and didn't just talk about therese's music video in isolation, i feel like that gives the analysis even more depth
thank you so much for making this video, even if its been 8 months. everyone who made a 'reaction video' to the thérèse music video should watch this, because they are missing the exact point of the song.
The way she uses transmediation is so captivating, I remember when I first looked up Thérèse Dreaming and realised she was in Blue Hippo, and then all the links that come with that! Love the analysis :)
Thanks so much!! I absolutely love it when one piece links to another in art- it’s like a bunch of hidden Easter eggs you have to uncover to figure out all the meaning. :)
This was the first song I ever really, truly, wanted to understand - after watching the music video this song VERY quickly become my favorite song. The video is truly a pice of art, the lyrics are amazing and I’ve wanted nothing more than to see how others viewed this in a more analytic way, I love the way you see and have analyzed the piece it truly is an amazing song and Mayas music is truly phenomenal
Thanks so so much for taking the time to watch and comment, it means a lot to me. I (obviously lol) really thought this song was special and I think Maya’s Lyrics are some of the most technically interesting I’ve heard In a while- she writes them before the music and usually adapts from old poetry which I think is interesting. I’m so glad you feel the same! :)
Thank you so much for posting this. This is such a well considered and thought out interpretation. Your references to other pieces of art and Hawke's previous work is illuminating. I'm a huge fan of some of Ethan Hawke's films - particularly his collaboration with Richard Linklater. I love that those works also have subtle references to previous works and their shared themes. On another note, when Maya Hawke was on The Tonight Show, she made a deliberate effort to voice her objection to the Supreme Court's majority judgment which overturned Roe v Wade. Your comments on her music video gives so much life to the music video. I love that this must mean so much to you that you decided to create this channel and post your first video. It helps that you have such a soothing voice too !! Love from NZ.
Thank you so much for such a lovely response! I’m so glad that you gained something from it, and I do intend to post more in the future if my busy schedule allows me to. I have so many other topics that I’d be more than happy to ramble on about if people actually want to listen haha. This has made my day, I really appreciate the time you took to watch and comment. :)
this is such an amazing video. Listening to a song is completely different from understanding a song. This video made me appreciate the song so much more, thank you :))
oh my goshh pleaseee make more of these!! i usually cant sit through video essays (even when i want to) but the pacing and delivery of this one was on spot
also about the blue hippo there's also a great connection to childhood Maya Hawke, with a book about a curious young boy running around the Met after William the Blue Hippo. I can't remember the name of it but I remember reading it as a kid. It would make sense if Hawke read it as a child. The video was also so smart and well made total props to you!
Omg thank you so much for this insight! That’s such an awesome find and so fits with the narrative. I’ll definitely have a look into that. Thanks for commenting :))
This was so fascinating to watch! As soon as I saw the music video I went on a hunt for a video essay on Maya's music because I always felt like there was such an intricate and purposeful nature behind all of her lyrics and cinematic choices in her videos, and you summed it all up perfectly :)
I love your analysis and explanation on the song!! I also think it’s amazing that you gave context on the painting it’s based on and how it’s history could have influenced Maya and her intentions of the song and video. I feel like so many people are so quick to jump to conclusions and harsh judgements, especially if something makes them uncomfortable, but digging deeper into the meanings and influences really flesh out the argument being made and also open up so much conversation.
Thank you so much! I feel the same way, people didn’t seem to want to understand or didn’t take the time to think about it, which is frustrating when there’s so many hidden themes to explore (which is what makes it so great!). Thank you so much for watching :)
Thank you do much for this video!! I was a bit confused about the lyrics and the connection with mv but now everything make sense and i have been always a big fan of maya as an actor now I'm definitely going to be a fan of her music as well she's an amazing artist!

Thank you so so much for taking the time to watch and comment! I’m hopefully going to start writing a script for a full MOSS review now it’s out but I sadly don’t have the luxury of the summer holidays anymore haha. I’m so happy you got something from my interpretation, again I really appreciate your kind words :)
i am so happy to have found this video. i have been looking for a good analysis of "thérèse" to reference in my english essay and this one is perfect. i will definitely quote you and you did a great job!
Thank you very much! I intend to cover the whole album, now it is out, but I need to find some time to do it. Are there any other topics you might suggest? I’d love any ideas :)

Ive only just watched the music video, and have now seen it 3 times and this video. And the points you have made in this video are helping me understand my thoughts about it. Personally i believe part of the message is to do with the lack of privacy today. All these people were outside when engaging in sexual acts, and halfway through the video you see them be 'caught'. I believe that these people were hiding in a public place as that seems like the only place to get privacy (since no one would expect to see such things outdoors). It could be that Maya is relating this issue to celebrities and people in the public eye, everything they do is being seen by strangers. At the end of the video you see the characters being rounded up, bound, and taken somewhere. Making you questions who is in the wrong. Are they being led away because they are in the wrong? Or are the people capturing them, the wrong ones? When comparing this with the painting, i believe that it also could be to do with the sexualisation of children. Though i mainly get that idea from the lyrics rather than the video. The repetition of "its a test, its just therese" makes me believe that we (society or the viewer) are being conditioned to see this as 'fine'. These people have been captured and taken away, and its nothing to care about. Its fine. Which makes me concerned as to where these people are being led to? I also feel like the nudity in the music video is also deliberately used to make the audience feel somewhat uncomfortable. As nakedness is a private thing, something that should be consented to. Especially when they are being led away, you see the woman in the back attempt to cover herself, making you more unsettled. Like you should look away, not out of disgust but out of respect. Its 3am and im ill, so i apologise if this makes no sense. These are just my thoughts after having only known of this video and song for about an hour. Great video by the way :)
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I absolutely love how you have got a fresh perspective on this- and I totally agree! I’m certain that this is definitely apart of the meaning behind the song. I feel Maya doesn’t really mind wether her songs are relatable or not, but rather simply writes what she knows and that is often a very personal retrospective of herself, so these ideas (particularly about privacy) would certainly come into this. I hadn’t thought about the person trying to cover themselves, but that’s a great detail to catch. I love your analysis, thanks so much for responding. Hope you feel better soon! :)
