    The Metropolitan was my first fountain pen, and I love it! But... I own more Safaris and use them more often. Maybe it’ll the heft of the metal, but my two Metros feel like special occasion pens, while my Safaris feel like everyday-in-the-purse pens. If someone asked me which they should get, I think I’d ask them what they wanted the pen for. If they want a nice pen on their desk, Metro wins easily. If it’s for rougher use, the Safari.

    Always and forever the Lamy Safari. It's what I use for my 5th-grade students when I teach cursive because of the grip, balance, and comfort. Its weight is perfect for young hands that need to build small motor skills and stamina, is funky enough looking for a kid to love it, and unique enough for the pen to stand out from others. I had one student who told me his father tried to steal his Lamy Safari once because he loved the feel of it and my student demanded he give it back, "Or Ms. H will kill me when we do cursive!" :D (Dad emailed me to ask where I got it so he could order his own and ended up with an AL Star.) The ink cartridges are a great no fuss/no mess feature in the classroom. I love my Pilot Fude for drawing, but my everyday work horse will always be a Lamy Safari.

      @christadicken296 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this comment was left months ago, but I'm just running across it. I teach 4th grade and have been reading about how fountain pens can be helpful with students who have "messy" handwriting. How do you handle fountain pens class-wide? Do you buy each student his/her own? (That's a bit pricey, but I'm guessing it might make a good Donor's Choose project.) Do they keep them after they leave your class, or do you reuse them from year to year? I'd love to try this with a few of my students who are struggling with those nasty scratchy pencils.

    I just got my first Metropolitan, and I enjoy it hugely. Very serviceable, starts every time, is consistent and smooth on my 32# paper (and in a cheap little journal, too), the fine nib lays down a very precise line, and it feels good in the hand. For the price, I would recommend it to everyone. I hope I just did...

    I’ve reviewed both of these pens on my channel! I prefer the Safari, and have a few issues with the design of the Metro, but I still think it’s a good pen. I started out with a Metropolitan, but I soon discovered the Safari. I have at least 10 of each, and I love them both, and I use them both nearly everyday. That said, I will probably never buy another one of either because I’m mostly buying more expensive pens at this stage of my hobby, and I do have a lot of them. I tend to gift them a Lot. I lean (barely) toward the Safari only because of the nibs. I think Lamy is a little better quality (barely), and they’re widely available. They’re also super easy to change. I don’t think you can be disappointed in either, especially if you’re on a tight budget. Thanks for the video.

    Thank you! I will always have a soft spot for the Safari but I would prefer the matte versions as the body does not get scratched up like the glossy ones. The Metro is great, as it comes with a metal body, convertor and has a proper fine nib. The fine nib is better than the Safari whose Medium and Fine are not much different. But the section of the Metro is a tad small for me.

    I am a big fan of “Pilot” products. I buy “Plumix” here in Poland and “Penmanship” in China and swap the nibs. (Plumix for stub nibs, black Penmanship for the look.) Now I’m waiting for my first Metro. Never thought to buy one, but found this black&white houndstooth version with M nib on sale and decided to own for future reference ;)
    I also have my very old yellow Safari (also M). Didn’t use it for years, but ->
    -> Those “wet” M nibs are better for some inks that are too bright for F nibs, for example Ferris Wheel Press “Lady Rose”.
    Ps. For LAMY Safari & poetry lovers I recommend white version with Wislawa Szymborska signature. I saw it in good price here in Poland recently.

    I have both. I rotate my pens monthly, with each pen with a different ink color. It's easier to distinguish the months in my bullet journal that way. Each has their up and downs. A Lamy Safari fountain pen with it's _"tripod grip"_ is great to teach people - _adults and children_ - to hold the pen the correct way! I know fountains are great for writing, and writing style - mostly- improves. However, sometimes a ball point/roller ball pen is a must! There is now a ball point/roller ball pen that uses a converter and uses fountain pen ink, *The Best of both worlds* _(not Star Trek)!_

    The most important consideration besides price in this comparison is the nib selection. If you are at all interested in the quality of the nib, you have to choose the Metropolitan. Japanese nibs are superior, especially in F and EF. The finer side of the spectrum is owned by the Japanese, because their writing characters demand it. I love my Metropolitans for their writing accuracy. The Metro is more pen than you are paying for. It is not only worth it's own price, it is worth the Safari's price.

    The LAMY Safari is my first love for fountain pens, but I only like the matte ones. I never cared for the look of the Pilot Metropolitan but absolutely love the Pilot Prera which has a similar nib. (I have 9 solid-color Prera FP's and 7 clear ones.)

    Metro for me. A big decider was that I don't have, and do not wish to have, a traditional 3-point grip. Also the cheaper starting price of the metro and the included converter was exactly what I wanted because I have no interest in cartridges. I will give credit to the safari's ability to swap nibs though.

    I bought the first Safari 1986. Last year, I got a crack in the hood. I wrote to Lamy and asked about how long they expected it to last. They were so impressed of almost 35 years of daily use, so they sent me a new pen!! But, since I'm a collector, I also have the Metro. Because it's metal, it feels a little bit more solid to write with. So, I would say 55-45 to the Metro. But the Safari is more than very good!! Also nice with all the colors. Metro is not there yet.

    I think it mostly comes down to your grip preferences. I use four of my fingers so the Safari is very uncomfortable for me. Personally, I'm actually a bigger fan if the Diplomat Magnum. Not sure if I reccomend Twsbi for newcomers because they're filling mechanism is slightly more complex than the typical cartridge converter methods.

      I have a twsbi go, and would recommend it to anyone who wants a refillable fountain pen that holds a lot of ink, be they beginners or more seasoned users. I like how it feels, although it is very fat compared to other pens I own, and I like how it writes. Very easy to clean out and refill as required.

      We're fond of all Lamy's pens. Even their ABS plastic Safari pens are hearty for long-term use. In my opinion, the Safari is built for more ergonomic comfort than the Logo.

    I've got a Safari as well as a Pilot Prera (same nib as the Metropolitan), and the Pilot writes significantly better. The Safari (medium nib) for me lays down less ink at the beginning of a letter, and about halfway through, the line gets heavier. You can see it in this video with the writing sample at 5:56, and even the Lamy writing sample at JetPens, and I've seen it in other YT writing sample vids. None of that happens with the Pilot, in my very limited experience.
    I do still like the feel and weight and look of the Safari and use it regularly at work, and will double down on flushing the nib and feed when this cartridge empties in case that helps. But I am definitely team Pilot for new fountain pen enthusiasts who just want something that writes perfectly without fiddling.

  • @a22lotti

    Oof. I’m team both? I have four metros, one safari, one vista, and two al-stars. So... yeah. The recent safari colors haven’t really grabbed me, but 2021 looks interesting. You definitely highlighted all the right points.
    Personal experience: the metro feels heavier, and the grip on the safaris is a little nicer for me (longer grip, no step). Then again, I like the medium nib on my metros very much. So it’s a toss up :D

  • @mebpratt859

    I have multiples of both. Different size nibs and different colored pens. I am an emotional writer meaning the nib size and color of ink changes according to how I feel at the time, as well as, what I want to convey with my writing. I also like to use different colors of ink and coordinating barrel/cap for the month/season/holiday. Eg. January, light blue & aqua for snow & ice, then February pink and/or red for Valentines Day, and March, Kelly green for St. Patrick’s day, etc. throughout the year. I usually have three to five fountain pens inked up at any one time. Two of them will be a Lamy Safari and/or a Pilot Metropolitan along with my more expensive fountain pens. One of the pens and ink combos will not fit into that pattern. It will be the color of ink and fountain pen that I’m fascinated with at the moment.
    P.S. I have had good experiences with both.

    I love my metro as a desk pen. If I looked hard enough to find a real complaint, it would be the small ink volume. And that's just depending on personal preference and how much you write. I love their fine nibs. So smooth. My only complaint is that band in the middle. lol Even the ones that are the same color. To me, it just disrupts the sleekness of the pen. I'd rather see the whole pen in a print design or solid color, instead of just that band.
    I've never tried a Lamy to be honest. Having to buy the converter separately is just a turn off for me.

    I have many Lamy Safaris and Al Star with cartriges, in my region (Mexico) there aren't any Lamy converters and they're expensive (40usd each), I want to try with fancy inks like Namiki ones or Montblanc. I currently have two montblanc pens, one rollerball/fineliner and one ballpoint, but currently I don't have 700usd to spend on another Montblanc so I think I will try the Metropolitan, and began to save to buy a nice MB Starwalker Urban fountain pen.

    Metropolitan (more exactly, Pilot MR Euro version). Because:
    1) it's not triangular;
    2) it's all-metal body;
    3) in Euro version, it supports international standard cartridges or converters;
    4) Pilot's F/EF nibs really write fine/extra-fine, no deception.
    If we compare to the Al-Star instead, the number 2 can be replaced with 2) Pilot MR is less expensive.

    I'm team pilot and team Lamy as each has a place in my collection. I'm in the UK so we have the MR series with standard international, but I do have some US Metro models. One thing though is these came with a CON-B squeeze converter, not a CON-20.

    • @virtual_self

      I'm eyeing both Lamy and Pilot, ordered a safari M but now after watching a lot of videos I think its too much for my taste and so now I'm looking for a "real" F since from what I see the F is almost the same as M in Lamy. The problem is that on Amazon it doesn't tell you if the Pilot MR comes with a converter or not. I'll probably return the Lamy and get the Metro instead because of the converter (of it comes with one) and also the nib size.
      Also, I ordered Lamy black ink, is there a better ink for the same price or for a little more money?

    • @bikkies
      @bikkies ปีที่แล้ว

      @@virtual_self If you are buying in the UK then the Pilot MR, MR2 (Animal) and MR3 (Retro Pop) fountain pens will NOT include a converter. If buying in mainland EU then I'm not sure. If buying in the US then I think the Metropolitan family still comes with the CON-B "squeeze" converter. As for which inks to choose then, particularly if you're already thinking about a converter, any bottled ink designed for a fountain pen should be OK. Avoid pigmented inks, acrylic inks and, in general, inks sold for use with dip pens or "calligraphy" pens. Any of the standard inks from Lamy, Pilot, Waterman or - more old school - Parker Quink should do the job as a starter ink.
