Just about 10 years since posting the video, and the car is still going fine. Gear box is a bit whiney, but we did have some 'fun' in the early days. Sun roof is about the only thing wrong. Will open ok, but often fails to close, and then mysteriously 2 days later will allow you to close. I just don't use it anymore. As for the engine though, it runs great, still heaps of power, and smooth. The 3 port boost soleniod was definitely my favourite mod. Smooths out the transition from non-turbo to turbo by brining the turbo on sooner, and makes for a nice daily suburban drive.
For the sunroof... it's probably just the switch. People don't realize how often window switches just need to be clean to keep the connection working properly.

My 04 FXT started ticking really loud. they explained that some injectors get really noisy. they said its mainly the yellow injectors, they said it will run fine, but the injectors can be replaced to make it quieter.
Same noise on my 1998 Subaru legacy it's made this noise it's whole life. Still going strong today. Running just like it was when new. 256k later. Full synthetic whole time since day one. Manual trans. Great car should be able to get another 20 year out it just need some rustolium

And yes, just like SargentWrx said, this is a pretty normal sounding boxer engine. I just had a fool tuner (XRT) try to tell me otherwise...now I know better.
Sounds exactly like mine. Most of that tick is injectors. I put a long screw driver up against the injectors and held to my ear. Clear as day, almost all the ticking there.
5 years later I still have the same car and it runs as well as it ever did. Sound is much the same and engine condition is just as good. No oil burn and as responsive as ever. I took a new Levorg out the other day and still prefer my tuned GT Liberty. Less turbo lag and more torque from what I can tell. Though it's a bit unfair as I have a "stealth back" exhaust (3" down, mid and 2.5" Y pipe), 3 port boost solenoid, K&N air filter, and complete retune to take advantage. But all running well. Lots of fun for around town but still able to accommodate carrying a load of 2nd hand bricks in the rear tray when needed. :-)
Do you think it’s the same on all cars bc I bought a 2001 Volkswagen Golf 2.0 it has a very similar noise and most of the videos I’ve seen say lifter tick but I’ve had it for a year wit the same noise and nothing changed I’m stressed now
I have a brand new 2017 WRX with FA20, and mine sounds the same. I have 3025 miles on it. Never really hear it because I have my headsets on all the time. I noticed it a little when I drove without them on. But car runs great.

Bought mine at 190k mi and currently sitting around 221k mi, hasn't changed its performance at all, just makes weird noises like this and occasionally is quite groggy when I want to wake her up. Even sounded like some serious knocking at one point but magically stopped literally the day I had my dad come over to check it out. Drives great now. Bought it from some old foreign lady who said her son drove it before he went off to college... Which is why I worry all the time, thinking he might have been abusive/neglectful and caused some unknown issues
Hello, Sounds normal to me, the noise you were hearing is the valvetrain, the little ticking sound accompanying the noise could be injectors injecting fuel. Sounds like a healthy engine.. Just be sure to check your oil levels frequently as that is really the only reason Subaru's have engine failure(unless extremely unlucky) Been working for Subaru for the last 3.5 years..
My 2006 makes a ticking noise when moving the accelerator from idle to just a little bit, and then goes away by pressing slightly more on the accelerator. Could it be related to the throttle by wire unit or the fuel injectors?
I don’t know if you still have this account but i just got a 2008 impreza hatchback 2.0 and no issue with it it’s just i have a weird hissing noise under the car around the back are when I usually get home from driving and i put the car in the garage i open the door while the car is on and just hear this hissing sound but it’s not from the engine it’s like under the car but no exhaust leaks ether. Could you know what it is?
@@samuraiberserk7524 quite possibly just the throttle body shutting down.. open the bonnet and it may get louder and you can pin point where its coming from.. not many things run on those cars after you switch them off..

You gotta think about Subarus thing. The engine is put low into the bay for "LOW CENTER OF GRAVITY." If you put science and audio into it, the acoustics of the engine bay are bouncing off the floor and the wall. Don't worry about the Subaru tick until your check engine light flashes failure on cylinder 3. Or your oil pressure light comes on. As long as you take care of it, do regular, and don't abuse the fuck out of it, that car will last you forever.
Legacy GTB 2.0 JDM Twinscroll owner here and I can confirm that mine has exactly the same noise, and like yours it's slightly more clicky on the air box side. It's been like this ever since I've owned the car which is 24months so pretty sure this is normal. Mine has yellow top injectors. I think it's a combination of the injectors, lifters and Avcs oil pressure solenoid and maybe just the fact that the cylinders are lying flat so resonate noise.
Our 6 year old Outback has been going strong but the engine is noisy as hell, especially when using synthetic oil. But so far no engine issues. The only thing so far that has deteriorated is my damn nerve. Sometimes I think even my Harley engine is quieter. The only car that made a much louder ticking noise was our 2001 Chevy Malibu (purchased new at the time) but that particular car was built in Hell. Which is why we jumped into a Subaru
Could just be your injectors, with the way the injectors sit on the ej motors they have to work a bit harder than normal engines causing them to wear out faster
I have that same tapping sound under the plastic on top of my engine and it scares the crap out of me never owned a Subaru before I bought it two days ago and I’m scared it’s something major I guess that sound is just normal in the boxers?

My 2010 legacy is making a grinding noise that only happens when I’m hitting 250-300 rpm’s. Once I go over the 300 it goes away . it always makes that noise sometimes when I’m barely stepping the gas . Any one have an idea what it could be ?
Sucks to get a new car and then the motor sounds like shit within a year and you're embarrassed to even drive the damn thing because it sounds like junk. Been there, done that.
Nothing worse than an idling Subaru, they like and need to be driven....hard. Well my forged 2.5 STi Spec D does anyway. Drive them like a fairy and they go to sleep, fuel gets wound back. They thrive on a beating (forged ones on the 2.5 anyways!)

Just to add....another year has gone by and the subi hasn't missed a beat. So confirmed. .. just regular, healthy boxer engine noise.

This is normal. Although it's very irritating. My Forester XT also has that noise. Best thing to do is get a noisy exhaust to drown it out ;)

yeah my 96 outback has been making that sound for 60k miles, about to hit 300k miles on original engine! 2.2L :D
Pretty sure that's Injector tick. My legacy sounded like that and never had an issue

My 2005 Impreza GX 2.0 sounds the same, according to most experienced Subaru owners this is normal...
My is the same, the weird is that only 1 side of engine makes the noise. I turn on radio and problem fixed.

I got a low Millard jdm 2.0 and it sounds exactly the same lol

it looks like the fuel damper. This noise is very common when it is defective.
Its the timing belt tensioner. Some think it's "valve slap." There is a great video on this (you tube ). I was quite relieved when I saw this.

My 03 Rex makes the same noise. I will be getting the valves adjusted soon. Hopefully that gets rid of some of the ticking.
