I have a 2017 crf250l Rally and I love it. It fits my needs well. I ride a substantial way on the road to the off-road places and it is very comfortable on the road but handles the off road just fine. I’m 56 and I do occasionally ride technical single track going over big rocks and through deep streams and it can do it with ease. The extra weight is not enough to make that much of a difference to me. I never worry about running out of gas and I often ride for many hours off road. I’ve dropped my bike many times and it takes it well if you don’t mind some scuffing up but that’s what I got if for, to take the punishment and keep on going. I only wish it had a little more power without adding weight so I wish it were the 300 but it’s not enough of a change for me to make yet.

Yeah the 300l Rally seems prefect for my needs, and even with the factory power boost I heard the new engine is still very restricted bc of emissions standards. I bet it'll with a cat delete, new pipes, and ECU tune the 300l will be making nearly double the power of a stock 250l which is perfect for me.

I think i am settled on the Rally. One thing about the Rally is the front fairing/headlight/instruments are frame mounted. This is good because once you add other accessories like GPS and phone holder/charger etc, it's a lot of extra weight on the handlebars on the crf300L. The rally has the frame mounted dash so you can mount all your extra gear to that and not add anything to the handlebars...

  • @pgirard26
    @pgirard26 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

2018 Rally owner. Besides the wind protection, the Rally fairing also keeps you drier when riding through water meaning just your feet get wet unless you really hammer through it. The other thing is the lower fairing has enough space in it to carry tools, tubes, a pump, and possibly a fuel bag depending on it's shape. Keeps the weight low.

    • @pgirard26
      @pgirard26 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@Michael_Mears I'm in the desert west of the United States. Tracks through the desert can be strait and fast, which favors the Rally due to a slightly longer wb. OTOH, the L is easier to navigate rougher and twisty trails. Both will do it, one is more suitable. I chose the Rally because inevitably the wind blows here in the late afternoons and it's nice to be able to hit the pavement and slab it home at almost any speed I need.

As someone who owns a 2016 Crf250l and a 2017 crf300 rally (cbr300r engine swap) I can confirm everything solid said - I think you mixed up rally and L @3:56 solid. Overall the rally is a better road bike, good and stable less likely to be affected by wind at high speed, does not turn in to the corners as fast as the L does - that weight difference is surprising !! Weight carried a lot higher up in rally, compounded by larger tank extra fuel load and navigation station - I am small frame and prefer the flick ability of the L myself - wind is solved with a “screens for bikes” screen - ACT based company - 250 is much more nimble off road - for me at my weight age and skill I can ride my 250l much quicker off-road than the rally. The rally is really wide at the backend too - that toolbox is huge!! The 300 motor does make the bike much more torquey, and the bike it always “should have been” - but overall I prefer (70% dirt) the agility and weight saving of the 250L - I can live in the shorter range . I carry a couple litres in those fuel rates eBay 1 litre canisters in my Bunnings pelican case. Tip for those who find suspension too squishy, rather than spend big on suspension wind the preload to max and change the front fork oil for 15w and overfill by 10% - it’s worked for me for two years (your mileage and skill level may vary - do at your own risk !) panels are way cheaper on the 250L too.

Used to have the 250 Rally and it was nice on roads though anemic on highways here in Canada. One comment mentions dropping it and less to break on the 300l. Very true. First and only time I dropped it plastic broke and I drove it differently and slower after that. Also access to the engine requires removing a lot of plastic. So my 2 cents. I contacted IMS to ask about the safari tank and they told me they have some other projects first so I should ask it again when spring of 2021 arrives. For city commuting and staying within the borders it's fine. Even in Europe, it's fine. I will have to think of a solution when I go on the trip to Asia though. There will be places where I will not see a gas station for more than the range of the 300L is.

I haven't ridden it so I might be wrong but the type of windshield on the Rally, where it's relatively straight up and down and far from the rider, is usually pretty noisy and subject to buffeting. So while, in theory, it should be better on longer trips, the windshield could actually make the ride more fatiguing. Test ride if you can before buying.

Unless you are going to work hard on dirt tracks or moto type riding, the Rally is a better overall deal. The only real differences are the tank size and the width being 4 inches more in the Rally. The headlight is nice as well. But the Rally provides all the accessories and as we know, most people like all the extras, assist clutch, placement of foot pegs, the windshield, its all there. No add ons required. If you aren't riding moto, get rally, if you wish to ride harder, get the L. Most simply want to get dirty and ride well on the road which the Rally has the advantage. Nobody is really stating that this engine is the CB300R engine, which is a good business decision, reliability confidence for the buyer, and you can view this model on TH-cam to see its performance. It's the better deal when you consider its only competition is the KLX300 until Kawasaki releases the Jan 2021 models. Yamaha is out of the equation for this size of displacement and the KTM is well, eh more adventure bike.

I'm confused. I've read repeatedly that the Rally has more ground clearance than the L. Which was the case historically. ADVpulse shows Rally at 33mm more ground clearance than the L. (this puts the weight increase - tower/screen and gas tank - even higher, making picking it up even harder). On a side note, how killer would the Rally look with side by side lights, like the original Africa Twin. And do something with the front break cable!

Fuel tank size really is not a problem on the Rally being that the 300's are capable of 60 mpg after an hour of riding you have basicly the same amount of fuel in your tank as the 300L would full. seat height 10mm more, thats really not anything after the springs are broke in the all relaxed and that only takes a few rides...plus the suspension is pretty soft on both of theses bikes anyway.

Looks like the DR can have a lower seat height of about 1.8 inches with a lowering link but is about 30 pounds heavier, but is the extra weight noticeable or is the lower seat height more important? Also considering the KTM 390 Adventure?

A year ago I choose the KTM 390ADV before the 250 rally. (The weight of my bike with some fuel in is 168kg then I put it on some scales). The KTM is awesome off road, but nothing to take on a single track, with the small wheels and low ground clearance. But it's a road bike on road, comfortable and fun. I have ridden 12000km since April.
It would be nice to have a video comparison of the two: the KTM 390adv vs the 300 rally.

It would be even nicer to see KTM put that 390 motor in an Enduro bike similar to the 690. That’s the real comparison here. KTM needs to wake up and see that we want more details for options and less adventure options. The 390 engine is absolutely perfect for dual sport. They just need to put it in a proper frame and wheel size package.

Hard to say without having ridden the L and I will do a comparison video once I have. On paper I think the WR still has the edge when the going gets tough off road. It is the closest thing to and enduro without being an enduro IMO. What will be telling is the engine response for the 300 and if it provides a better bum in the seat experience. I don't like to think of bikes as better or worse, they are just suited to different situations and riding styles. Time will tell how they compare and if Yamaha come to the table with something later down the line 😎

Start pushing it and as you know the crf's suspension low speed plushness will start to get the bike out of shape. If you upgrade the suspension then the frame flex starts to become apparent when ridden harder. This is where the stock WR still has the edge: frame and suspension. Both of these will top out at around 75 mph, and any incline reduces this by 10 mph or more. 30hp is not a lot to play with. At 4:19 when you spread out your finger from your thumb to show 10 mm your showing about 30 mm . 10 mm is the length of the average exposed finger nail that's trimmed . Your average skip plat you add is 4 to 5 mm if its metal , the 300l doesn't come with a skid plate so once you add a skid plate to the 300l your only talking about 5 mm difference ,that's half a finger nail difference, so no one is is going to be able to tell the difference in the ground clearance .
It looks like the 300l has Front Brake Single 256mm disc with twin-piston caliper where the rally has Single 296mm disc with twin-piston caliper so your getting better stopping power with the rally .
You said the rally is better for the shorter rider but the rally's seat height is listed as 35.2 inches and the 300l is 34.7 inches . How is a higher seat height going to help the shorter rider ? I think you messed that up real bad . Just because you have a 5mm difference in ground clearance once you add the skid plate to the 300l doesn't mean you have a lower seat height . Read the specs .
The difference in the weight of the bike is listed in curb weight that means with fluids and gas the 300l is 309 lbs and the rally is 333 but the 300 l Fuel Capacity is only 2.1 gallons, and the rally's is 3.4 gallons that's 1.3 gallons more and 1.3 gallons of gas weights 6.5 lbs . So take 6.5 lbs of the 333 and your at 326.5 lb's making it a 17.5 lb difference in the 2 bikes .
It looks like the rally has a skid plate of some type is it metal or plastic ? If its metal thats a good 3 lbs right there and you added a skid plate to the 300l the weight difference would now be 312 vs 326 lbs so now your down to 14 lbs .
The rally has a wider seat also and lets face it most people are going to upgrade the 300l seat to a seat concept anyways so add another 2pound to the 300l for the new seat and that makes it 314 vs 326 that puts it at 12 lbs
Your getting close to 10 lbs difference now so is 10 lbs less worth not having a extra gallon of gas ? Give me the extra gallon any day . Most people are going to upgrade the tiny 300l tank to the bigger after market tank right off the bat anyways so go ahead and add a 2 lbs difference in the bigger after market tank to the weight of the 300l and your now at 317 vs 326 now its only 9 lbs difference .
So now your under 10 lb difference and your getting very cool led head lights and wind screen . If you get rid of the rally muffler and get a after market one you lose 10 pounds right there . so now your at the same weight as the 300l but a much cooler looking bike and better front wheel breaking because of the bigger disc size. 326 - 10 lbs with the after market muffler puts the Rally at 316 lbs vs the 300l at 317 lbs .
So out on the dirt with the add on's your going to do to the 300l your going to be at the same weight as the Rally so you might as well just go for the Rally .
Your only talking 750 dollars difference in price . The after market tank with the locking cap and the concept seat will put you over that by themselves . Now add on a upgrade led light and a skid plate and some hand guards and your over the price of the Rally .
Don't be stupid, the Rally with its extras is going to be the same weight as the 300l once you do a tank ,seat , brush guard , led lights and skid plate updates but for a lot better price . Once you do the math you will see the Rally is the way to go both on road and off .

I’m 5ft 8 will it be too tall or too small?

Should be fine, if its too tall just add a factory lowering link and lower seat 👍

The 300l has a seat height of 880mm=..34.6"
I would say it would be too tall for you....Go for a lower seat..drops it by 2.5" .Total height 816.5mm = 32.14" Steve

Service intervals? That's the big question no one is talking about.

It's a Honda, so you'll be getting some of the best mileage between service intervals that you can.

@@DavyRo My comment addressed service intervals not mileage. Totally different subject. But, yes, you are correct.

Thx for the video. Any TH-camr to investigate the following?
    Honda CRF 300 L (2021)

    Bike for Thailand:
    . 31 HP
    . LED light 💡
. 1 year of insurance offered with the bike .. all for

Bike for Europe or American markets:

If you want, you can bay in any european country where the Rally is availiable - just book a bike, book a fly and you in a perfect adventure trip riding home. If you need some serious addresses of Honda dealers, just let me know. Will be happy to help. Baught mine in Lithuania, devivery in late March

Put a skid plate on the L and it probably will end up with the same ground clearance as the Rally.

A GS1200 is much heavier than a crf300l and would be a pain to pick up. A crf300l compared to the crf300 rally is not that much of a difference.
