My close friend got into a major accident. Doctors declared him brain dead after 2 days. I knew that brain dead truly means dead But his family was still trying and they got some hope as his heart was still beating through ventilator. They were happy and cheerful that he is still breathing one could see how happy they were after hearing the news that his heart is still beating there is some hope. As an organ recipient, who has survived well over five years since being hours from death due to my original organ failing, may I thank all of you out there who now gas a better understanding of brain death and the possibility of donation. My donor is unknown to me (and the other recipients of their other organs) but my family and I cannot thank their family and loved ones enough for giving us the chance of life after their life ended. Blood donors are wonderful people too, but they don't need to be dead, thank goodness!

Sadly there is another situation. My Dad had complications 3 weeks post heart surgery... Blood vessel burst and lost blood... Did CPR and it caused brain injury. He appeared brain dead outwardly... But the neurologist said his was severe irreversible brain injury. His frontal cortex had not been injured... But he was also not truly in a coma. They said he was technically initiating his breaths but due to the brain stem being injured his airway needed ventilator to stay open. We ended up pulling the plug after 2 days and no sign of healing... And he passed peacefully and quickly. RIP Dad ❤.

Actually there is a man named Zack Dunlap that remembered hearing his doctor say he was brain dead. He was really “ticked off” hearing how they were going to take his organs. A relative that was in the medical field tried to test his response to touching his foot and he responded. They did NOT steal his organs and he is still living now. The human brain is like a computer and sometimes after a brain injury the brain is shocked and does not show brain waves but with time it can reset like a computer. In that case the brain can have very minimal waves. Some people are rushed to consider their loved ones to be brain dead and to donate organs. Some people have actually woken up in the O.R. And wondered why they are there so they stopped the organ donation. One surgeon actually was chocked to death by a so called brain dead patient that they were harvesting organs. Sometimes I feel that doctors themselves can't tell the difference. 3 years ago my uncle was in a coma and on life support. The doctors said that he would not likely wake up. They wanted to switch off the life support. My father refused and sought legal advice when they threatened to get a court order to switch it off forcibly. Guess what my uncle started showing signs of brain activity. He eventually was taken off life support as he was able to breathe for himself. He eventually woke up however has sustained permanent brain damage affecting mobility and speech. He is still alive and with us today.

Doctors don't care about their patients, you are just another pay cheque to them. Same reason why nothing gets cured anymore, a lifetime of treatment makes more money than a cure. Don't believe me? It's happening at all levels of society. "They don't make things like they used to" is just another sign of how disposable everything has become.
To nail the definition of brain death even further, you could also mention that the person's consciousness is, most likely, also gone with zero hope of coming back, and they're not seeing any dreams and not hearing anything from the outside world as opposed to (some?) people in coma.
Academically speaking, coma means you are not conscious, aware, dreaming, or have any type of brain activity either. Apart from the brain stem usually functioning. The weird stories coming from the rare ex coma patients is usually from medically induced ones, more often then not, tho not always. My aunt had brain haemorrhage after 3 months of having a heart operation. Doctors said she was brain damaged. We kept her in ventilator for few days. Then she passed away in front of me. It was really heartbreaking moment.
I was in a coma for a while after a traffic accident. Thankfully I woke up after about a day and a half and I've learned how to walk, talk and function in society again. I'll be left with some chronic health conditions for the rest of my life but I'm glad I'll still be able to enjoy some life quality. To everyone who wasn't as fortunate as I was, I'm with you and I hope things get better one way or another. And to everyone else waking up after a coma or vegetative state, you can do it! It may seem impossible but you will be able to reach the goals you are setting for yourself. Don't let anyone else decide your pace or comfort, do it at your own time, and trust me you will make it. That's what I did- it took me half a year to fully recover physically, but it was half a year well spent. I'm thankful for everyone who has helped me and all the others with these conditions.
I have a living will. If I am in a vegetative state with less than 10% recovery chance, or have Dementia and have no recollection of the people I love, I'm already dead. Take my body and give someone else the chance at life I had, so they can be the person they deserve a chance to be.

A coma means that you are alive but in a suspended state of sleep, be it medically induced or by injury resulting in temporary brain damage. Brain death, however, is that from permanent brain damage beyond repair that can lead to the patient being legally dead.

This was the case of my Auntie, she was in a state of brain death.. that's why the doctors informed her family that there's no more chances of recovery/survival😭 her organ functions (except for brain) are just dependent with the machines.

Nothing annoys me more than when people say “this person was technically dead for X amount of seconds” or something to that degree. When they say that they tend to not understand that it means “clinically dead” which basically just means their heart stopped. Yes that is serious, but not that uncommon, and not what most would consider “dead”. Biological death is being brain dead, and like the video says, no one has come back from that.
we've only lived with the fact that the brain is who we are for a few decades. For the longest time, people thought the heart was where our soul and thoughts and "who we are" was, so when your heart stopped, that was serious biz. Now we know better, but alot of our systems are still going off of old rules, it'll take time to change certain notions.

I have so many questions: 1. What happens if the stem gets damaged but not the cortex? 2. Why can't the heart keep beating indefinitely on the ventilator/pacemaker thingy thereby maintaining oxygen supply indefinitely to other organs after brain death? What happens after 3 days? 3. As far my knowledge in biology is your first question answer is...paralysis..individual can think normally but can't control his skeletal muscles (now I doubt if his involuntary muscles function normally or what😅😞)
Well, for your second question, even though the ventilator can be made to supply oxygen indefinitely as far as i know, it's nowhere near efficient due to lungs not working. So every other cells die out slowly due to decrease in oxygen as time pass by. I may be wrong, but that's my explanation 😅
1. Clearly it depends on the entity of the damage. Some vegetative functions (such as breathing) can stop working if vegetative nuclei are damaged. Facial paralysis can occur if somatic nuclei are damaged. 2. Heart and other organs can not indefinitely work without nervous system activity, as its function is to control heart and other organs. 3. Misdiagnosis is the reason why. Is it common, well.... yes, but common doesn't exactly mean "most of the time", just common enough to be a factor even if the majority of cases are diagnoses are proper. Good luck convincing a parent to say "Yes, harvest the organs of my son or daughter who is still breathing." "But ma'am, they are brain dead." "And how do you know? The last time I was here you diagnosed my other child and you were wrong." This right here is why the video was made. Not because people don't know the difference between "death" and "coma", but because if you have a child who is unconscious, but breathing, you are going to be VERY HARD to convince that your child is dead and should be diced up for parts for other people who you don't care about. I would never personally try to convince a parent to give up their breathing child so their organs could be harvested. Would I mind mine being harvested? No, and if something ever happens my family will have to deal with the fact that I'm an organ donor. Even though I can be a robot and am pretty heartless, I cannot tell a parent to their face that they need to let their breathing child be dismantled for spare parts. There is no reason for you to be disappointed. You shouldn't be disappointed for people loving their family so much that they take a risk that the doctor has misdiagnosed the death of their child.
"There is no recovery from brain death." Assuming, ofcourse that doctors are able to correctly diagnose that the patient truly is brain dead. There are cases where patients are mistaken to be brain dead only for neural activity and eventually consciousness to resume. The human brain is a very fickle organ.

My Mom got very sick one morning and we took her to emergency. She got worse and worse throughout the morning, the doctor told us it wasn’t looking good. Then after what felt like hours, the doctor came out saying things aren’t good and said she was pretty much brain dead…and just from that term we knew it was over, we lost our beloved Mother. It hurts but she is no longer suffering, just forever asleep, at peace. People should know the differences with these terms to avoid confusion, especially with hoping for their loved one to recover from brain death, no one should go through that, they must know the term.

Sorry for your loss As intensive care physician we usually fully support the patients until they are confirmed with brain death, then there is 2 ways moving forward, either the patient is suitable for organ donation and his family are willing we continue with full support till donation, if not suitable we inform the family and usually stop the organ support i,e the ventilator or if family disagree we dont stop the ventilator but the organs shut down in few days

Being one of those who woke up from a two week coma it is interesting to know the condition that landed me there in light of this information . As far as I know, brain death doesn’t mean the brain’s cells are dead, they just stopped communicating with each other, so the brain doesn’t function, but it’s tissue is still alive
@@federicoorticosa3399 He's not entirely wrong. EEG's measure voltage fluctuations coming from neurons in the brain, which is what brain activity is. Brain death just means that there are zero neurons firing and "talking" to each other. If the brain stem dies off with the cortex, no blood can be pumped through without artificial respiration; even if the heart does continue to pump blood it will only do so for a few days. Once the brain does reach a certain point of recieving no blood, and therefore no oxygen, it will start to undergo lysis: the brain liquifies.
Reminds me of the story where a young man was declared brain dead by doctors, and they were trying to donate his organs suspiciously relentlessly, when his father showed up with a handhun and protected his son, until he indeed showed signs of life and proceeded to make a full recovery... Moral of the story: despite brain death having 100% mortality rate, you should always make sure that the doctors made the right diagnosis.
I live in Portugal, and here we have a very interesting law. People don't choose to give their organs if they die, we are all doners by default. Here, If you don't want to give your organs you have actually to sign a form while you are still alive.

How about Coma with 10% of chance of recovery? ~ This happen when my mom rushed into hospital. And the next morning, we got a report that she passed away. But I was hopping for 10% that she would recover from coma. Then later on, she came home here in Philippines from Dubai, placed in the urn ~

You failed to cover another very important misconception: Medically induced coma which is a coma bought on by doctors using medication often to reduce the severity of brain damage after a traumatic event.

He was kept in the coffin at the funeral for about 2 days and at some point, he had woken up. The reason traditional doctors had given was the wood coffin had been made. That wood had a quality to absorb snake venom. But still, according to my opinion, it could be simply the hospital was unable to recognize he was weak but alive. When I was 16 my 17 year old cousin was in coma and they said she wasn't coming back. They donated all of her organs. When I was 18 my mother had a stroke, she was in the icu and they had to remove some of her skull until the swelling went away. She ended up paralyzed on her dominant side and struggles talking. It's been 12 and 10 years since these things happened and I'm still morning over both every day.

They wanted to switch off the life support. My father refused and sought legal advice when they threatened to get a court order to switch it off forcibly. Guess what my uncle started showing signs of brain activity. He eventually was taken off life support as he was able to breathe for himself. He eventually woke up however has sustained permanent brain damage affecting mobility and speech. He is still alive and with us today.

To nail the definition of brain death even further, you could also mention that the person's consciousness is, most likely, also gone with zero hope of coming back, and they're not seeing any dreams and not hearing anything from the outside world as opposed to (some?) people in coma.

Academically speaking, coma means you are not conscious, aware, dreaming, or have any type of brain activity either. Apart from the brain stem usually functioning.
The weird stories coming from the rare ex coma patients is usually from medically induced ones, more often then not, tho not always. It just highlights the truly mysterious and unknown about the brain we still dont understand.

I mean, etymologically, the word "conscious" definitely is supposed to mean "knowing", as in "having knowledge of" being synonymous to "being conscious of" and that consciousness then means that one knows what they're doing and what's happening around them, but for some weird reason, a lot of people decided to use this same word to define being alive as well, which really makes it hard to distinguish between someone being asleep, drunk, comatose, or brain dead, even though these are wildly different.
I suspect that the problem people have with distinguishing brain death and a coma might have something to do with how they could both be described with the same exact description depending on the definition of "conscious": "_____ is when the patient is no longer conscious".

My aunt had brain haemorrhage after 3 months of having a heart operation. Doctors said she was brain damaged. We kept her in ventilator for few days. Then she passed away in front of me. It was really heartbreaking moment.

I was in a coma for a while after a traffic accident. Thankfully I woke up after about a day and a half and I've learned how to walk, talk and function in society again. I'll be left with some chronic health conditions for the rest of my life but I'm glad I'll still be able to enjoy some life quality. To everyone who wasn't as fortunate as I was, I'm with you and I hope things get better one way or another. And to everyone else waking up after a coma or vegetative state, you can do it! It may seem impossible but you will be able to reach the goals you are setting for yourself. Don't let anyone else decide your pace or comfort, do it at your own time, and trust me you will make it. That's what I did- it took me half a year to fully recover physically, but it was half a year well spent. I'm thankful for everyone who has helped me and all the others with these conditions.

I have a living will. If I am in a vegetative state with less than 10% recovery chance, or have Dementia and have no recollection of the people I love, I'm already dead. Take my body and give someone else the chance at life I had, so they can be the person they deserve a chance to be.

Brain death, however, is that from permanent brain damage beyond repair that can lead to the patient being legally dead.
But there are few cases of brain death recovery.. probably they got confused with coma?

Nothing annoys me more than when people say “this person was technically dead for X amount of seconds” or something to that degree. When they say that they tend to not understand that it means “clinically dead” which basically just means their heart stopped. Yes that is serious, but not that uncommon, and not what most would consider “dead”. Biological death is being brain dead, and like the video says, no one has come back from that.
we've only lived with the fact that the brain is who we are for a few decades. For the longest time, people thought the heart was where our soul and thoughts and "who we are" was, so when your heart stopped, that was serious biz. Now we know better, but alot of our systems are still going off of old rules, it'll take time to change certain notions.

As far my knowledge in biology is your first question answer is...paralysis..individual can think normally but can't control his skeletal muscles (now I doubt if his involuntary muscles function normally or what😅😞)
Well, for your second question, even though the ventilator can be made to supply oxygen indefinitely as far as i know, it's nowhere near efficient due to lungs not working. So every other cells die out slowly due to decrease in oxygen as time pass by.

I always thought we don't need to be told that Coma and Brain Death are separate concepts, but something tells me there's a good reason you made this video, and I'm dissapointed in advance.
Misdiagnosis is the reason why. Is it common, well.... yes, but common doesn't exactly mean "most of the time", just common enough to be a factor even if the majority of cases are diagnoses are proper.
Good luck convincing a parent to say "Yes, harvest the organs of my son or daughter who is still breathing." "But ma'am, they are brain dead." "And how do you know? The last time I was here you diagnosed my other child and you were wrong."
This right here is why the video was made. Not because people don't know the difference between "death" and "coma", but because if you have a child who is unconscious, but breathing, you are going to be VERY HARD to convince that your child is dead and should be diced up for parts for other people who you don't care about. I would never personally try to convince a parent to give up their breathing child so their organs could be harvested. Would I mind mine being harvested? No, and if something ever happens my family will have to deal with the fact that I'm an organ donor.
Even though I can be a robot and am pretty heartless, I cannot tell a parent to their face that they need to let their breathing child be dismantled for spare parts.
There is no reason for you to be disappointed. You shouldn't be disappointed for people loving their family so much that they take a risk that the doctor has misdiagnosed the death of their child.

Brain death is sometimes misdiagnosed. People have awoken from comas that were diagnosed as "brain death" while their families were being asked about organ donation.
Brain death is sad and so is a coma, and it crazy how if someone is Brain dead they can use the origins to save so many more lives.

I get you. When my grandma died many years ago I was given the choice to go to the morgue to see her a last time. I refused. I wouldn't be able to stand the sight. I didn't want to see her lifeless body. I remember her by who she was and what she did when she was alive.

My Mom got very sick one morning and we took her to emergency. She got worse and worse throughout the morning, the doctor told us it wasn’t looking good. Then after what felt like hours, the doctor came out saying things aren’t good and said she was pretty much brain dead…and just from that term we knew it was over, we lost our beloved Mother. It hurts but she is no longer suffering, just forever asleep, at peace. People should know the differences with these terms to avoid confusion, especially with hoping for their loved one to recover from brain death, no one should go through that, they must know the term.

As intensive care physician we usually fully support the patients until they are confirmed with brain death, then there is 2 ways moving forward, either the patient is suitable for organ donation and his family are willing we continue with full support till donation, if not suitable we inform the family and usually stop the organ support i,e the ventilator or if family disagree we dont stop the ventilator but the organs shut down in few days

As far as I know, brain death doesn’t mean the brain’s cells are dead, they just stopped communicating with each other, so the brain doesn’t function, but it’s tissue is still alive

EEG's measure voltage fluctuations coming from neurons in the brain, which is what brain activity is. Brain death just means that there are zero neurons firing and "talking" to each other.
If the brain stem dies off with the cortex, no blood can be pumped through without artificial respiration; even if the heart does continue to pump blood it will only do so for a few days. Once the brain does reach a certain point of recieving no blood, and therefore no oxygen, it will start to undergo lysis: the brain liquifies.

Reminds me of the story where a young man was declared brain dead by doctors, and they were trying to donate his organs suspiciously relentlessly, when his father showed up with a handhun and protected his son, until he indeed showed signs of life and proceeded to make a full recovery... Moral of the story: despite brain death having 100% mortality rate, you should always make sure that the doctors made the right diagnosis.

I live in Portugal, and here we have a very interesting law. People don't choose to give their organs if they die, we are all doners by default. Here, If you don't want to give your organs you have actually to sign a form while you are still alive.

My father had a brain aneurysm when I was 10 and pronounced brain dead 2 days after bringing him to the hospital. The only reason we kept him alive for 4 days after his aneurysm was so that he could save 3 lives through his organ donation

Once some person in her village has declared dead, due to a snake bit: a venomous one. He was kept in the coffin at the funeral for about 2 days and at some point, he had woken up. The reason traditional doctors had given was the wood coffin had been made. That wood had a quality to absorb snake venom.
But still, according to my opinion, it could be simply the hospital was unable to recognize he was weak but alive.

@@laiya3606 Must be some sort of medical miracle in your mom's case. My grandpa's braian was stated dead and he died after few hours.
When I was 16 my 17 year old cousin was in coma and they said she wasn't coming back. They donated all of her organs. When I was 18 my mother had a stroke, she was in the icu and they had to remove some of her skull until the swelling went away. She ended up paralyzed on her dominant side and struggles talking. It's been 12 and 10 years since these things happened and I'm still morning over both every day.
