The Worst Avengers Reboot - Grading the Avengers Round 14: Heroes Reborn

- In 1996, for a full year, The Avengers were relaunched under the Heroes Reborn banner, a new, less-fun continuity for Marvel. Though short lived, it absolutely is enough to merit another round in Grading the Avengers!
As we continue to go through and grade the entire history of Avengers comics, today we detail how Rob Liefeld, Jim Lee, Walt Simonson, Jeph Loeb, and many others tried to revamp the Avengers. We'll talk about what and where adaptions succeed and fail with regards to their loyalty to source material, and how Heroes Reborn made a pretty big error in how it went about things.

A few notes
1. I wasn't aware they moved titles to Image. It was advertised at the time that they got Image Founders Rob Liefeld and Jim Lee to write some of their core titles, FF, Avengers, Captain America and IIRC Iron Man. Lee and Lifeld were marketed as having total creative control.
But AFAIK it was still published under Marvel.
2. People did think this was a reboot and I remember letters of people being upset because their back issues were now "non canon."
3. It turned out not to be a reboot, but rather the Avengers stuck in a pocket universe created by Franklin Richards after the Onslaught saga. Even before Heroes reborn came out there was already clues in the Onslaught saga and hints from Marvel that this was a pocket universe.
I grew up in the 90s and remember the controversy. I didn't even finish the 13 issue run of Avengers, because like you I felt they were just trying to tell the same story but with Liefeld style of art.
Captain America with Breast. Seriously, what more even needs to be discussed?
That drawing of thor in the thumbnail is already an outrage.
The person who drew that has no sense for human proportions. Can't believe they're actually getting paid for drawing.
Yeah. Rob Liefeld's style is one of the worst.
It truly baffles me how anyone thought Liefeld was any good, let alone hired him.

Ah heroes reborn one of the worst reboots ever in the marvel universe and destroyed the avengers.
The year long Image reboots were incredibly mediocre at best.
