I think it’s really funny how Mihawk who must have caused the most damage to the navy as a pirate and who was the strongest of the warlords is the only one out of all of them who didn’t rebel or go against the navy. He did his job by crushing pirates like Don Kriegs crew and he never killed civilians as far as we know

Thats really interesting that crocodile said mihawk doesnt trust others and mihawk is a loner and he still acts very nice to others.
He gave shelter to perona and zoro and supported the baboons teaching them how to farm and not be violent like how the humans showed them.
He never betrayed the government or had plans to do that which shows he must have been the one to get betrayed before he joined the warlords if he doesnt trust others now.
Also is it just me or did mihawk seem sad when he saw kuma become a warlord when he read the papers?

@@robet3244Backstory: Mihawk trained to become the Strongest and Met up with Shanks, who was his Equal. He worked under Shanks' Crew to go through the Grand Line, but once he got enough experience, He abandoned the Red-Haired pirates as he felt like he could Quickly rise up his sword play by Going solo and hunting down Marines. Mihawk later became tired on hunting Marines and accepted the Warlord position when offered to live a non-persecuted life. He cut down Pirates and the Monkeys on the island he resided to keep his sword skills sharp.

I think Mihawk has tied to Imu, House Nerona, and The Holy God Knights.Mihawk and possibly Nami are related to Imu. Imagine Dracule Nerona Mihawk and Nerona Nami. Obviously, not brother and sister but still descendants of Nerona Imu. Luffy's mother many also be a former Celestial Dragon as well.
I would argue the Marines weren't the only ones "desperately trying to snatch up any fast rising up and new pirates". The Yonkou themselves were out recruiting newcomers to their crew, bolstering their own forces against the marines: Ace joined Whitebeard instead of the Shichibukai, Big Mom worked with Capone Bege, Kaido has his Tobi Roppo and later tries to break several of the Supernovae to integrate them to his crew.
The Yonkou are to big to fail, the power vacuum left behind by roger was already filled, so as a newcomer you either have the choice to join either the four emperores, the shichibukai, or get rekt. (or be luffy for that matter)

The Yonko are certainly NOT too big to fail. The Big Mom Pirates fear if Big Mom is killed, it would spell the end of them and Big Mom and Kaido are no longer considered emperors after their defeats.
@@jonathanchen4987 I imagine the Big Mom Pirates could have to restructure if Linlin dies, and the new leader is likely to be either Perospero (the eldest child) or Katakuri (the second eldest son, but also the strongest and most charismatic).
I think these two are the only ones that seem half prepared for a future where their mother is gone; Perospero was joking about the possibility and Katakuri has some mixed feelings about her mother being defeated.

Honestly, I think the warlords were better and more entertaining villains than the yonko. Doffy and crocodile are only really competing with each other
That's only true because at that point the Yonko were so far beyond the Straw hats that they would be crushed. The stories of Big Mom and Kaido were quite interesting, helped by the experience that Oda has at this point.
The Shichibukai are far more earthly than the Yonko so far, gang leaders, tyrants, warriors.
Kaido is a massive divine dragon, whose base power is great enough to be relevant against fighting an admiral by an 8 yearold.
Big Mom literally changes the world around her to suit her whims.
They act more like humans do and not like godly beings
You can tell oda planned out the warlords and not the yonko. That’s why the villains and the arcs have moments where they are not it.

Thinking about it, there’s an interesting parallel to be made between the Warlords and the dynamic of the Rocks crew. An immensely powerful group of individuals that work under the agenda of another that ultimately devolve due to the prioritization of each individual’s plans and goals
They perhaps even foreshadowed the rocks pirates
It's possible that Rocks crew was the inspiration for the Shichibukai in some strange way actually.

This makes me think that if Luffy's first worldwide act in the Grand Line wasn't taking out a Shichibukai (Crocodile), he would've most likely gotten an invitation as well to be part of the group. But since all his crews first acts (Beating Crocodile, Beating the CP9 and causing a Buster Call on Enies Lobby, Beating Moria) served to destabilize world powers, the World Government probably thought that "Nah we aint dealin with this kid, someone take him out!"
Beating Crocodile didn't disqualify Luffy, Ace was offered the job for taking down a Warlord. It was the Enies Lobby Incident & Punching a Celestial Dragon at Sabaody that disqualified him even if Garp wanted him to become a Warlord. Had Lafitte not invited himself to the Warlord meeting & recommended Marshall D Teach we probably would have seen Aokiji give Luffy the choice right before Water 7. Of course Ace being captured would have ended Luffy's time as a Warlord.

Luffy kinda owns the Shichibukai when you think about it:
Doflamingo: defeats and dethrones him
Moria: defeats him and makes him homeless
Crocodile: defeats him then gets him to help escape impel down and Marineford
Hancock: makes her fall in love and simp over him
Jinbe: literally part of Strawhat crew
Kuma: saves Luffy and crew from certain death and sent them to perfect places to train
Mihawk: Personally trains Luffy's right hand man
Let's not forget Law who literally made an alliance with Luffy
Buggy is the same as Crocodile
Blackbeard seems to be the only exception (so far)

Crocodile was so intimidating and manipulative that he is arguably the most iconic One Piece villain for me. His only competition is Doflamingo and Black Beard. But while Bleack Beard is the evil reflection of Luffy, Doflamingo is the most influence figure in the pirate world.
I always liked Moria's powers and the fact that he is "litteraly" a shadow of his former self. Imagining him, slim and young, fighting Kaidou in a pyrotechic show of thunder and shadows is just too graphic and cool.
Jinbe is one of my favorite designs and strawhats. Kuma is shaping up to become the most tragic character in the story and one of my favorite.
And then there are Mihawk, Law and Buggy. All of them are great in their own way.
Shichibukai are just great.
And Boa and Weeviel
The Seven Warlords has conceptually always been my favorite type of villain group in all shounen. There's no leader above them. All of them are. Each one of them is a big deal on their own and had significant connections to the greater world.
If the OG 7 warlords got along they would easily be the strongest empire. mihawk as the yonko, easily can fill out commander spots with people like boa, doffy Kuma and jinbei, then the rest just provide extended forces like a zombie army, master mind planning with croc etc
They are basically a mini Yonko crew if they actually work together, with a crew of 6 solid 3rd commander+ level commanders. If Moriah got his life together he'd actually be a force to be reckoned with, but even as his father lazy self he still is crafty with a good fruit.
Crocodile, Boa, Doflamingo, Moria,
(Jinbe), all have entire organizations/crews/soldiers/gangs/underlings/zombies to fill out the fodder army they need.

I think that there was a similarly tumultuous period for the shichibukai about a decade before the story. It seemed that every year, a spot opened up. Hancock, Jimbe, and Doflamingo.
I remember how hype seeing Kuma and Doflamingo on screen together for the first time was and their summit; and the jimbei reveal
Personally, I think the Warlords were the most interesting by default. Not only were they the largest, but they were also the most in-depth group of characters.
With the Yonko, we don't know where the system rose from or how it worked besides four strong pirates gaining territory to rival the World Government. We don't even know how Shanks became an emperor.
With the Supernova, they were just in the right place at the right time. If Luffy hadn't punched Charlos, none of them would be recognizable. Hawkins and Apoo would have still joined Kaido and be a subordinate. Capone would still have raided Big Mom with Luffy. Drake would still be undercover. Bonnie would still have her crew killed by Blackbeard. The only thing I can somewhat see differently would be Law, Kid, and Luffy being able to work as efficiently in Wano, maybe even losing completely. The whole system was so inconsequential that Morgan was able to rebrand it to the Worst Generation to include Blackbeard.
The only other system is the Warlords. Each has a deep backstory or in-depth character that could remain famous without the Warlords even existing. The individual Warlords were able to hold up entire arcs without needing countless battles or navigating entire nations to act as filler. Each had their own moral compass between what they wanted and what the World Government wanted, something that no other pirate crew needed to worry about. I think that is why the Warlords were the most interesting group of characters in One Piece.
Worst Generation had the most at 12 Members although agreed that it is the least recognizable group despite being the largest, while the 7 Warlords have the most depth because we knew them the longest. There are 11 known Warlords & 7 known Emperors. It would be cool to find out who was the Yonko before Shanks that he took the position from. White Beard died before we got to know much about him with Marineford being more than 90% of his total screen time. Buggy & Blackbeard were both Warlords before becoming Yonko meaning they equally add to both of those groups.
THEORY: Jean Bart from Law crew is a BUCCANEER
Moria is so underrated. He has one of the most powerful will in the game, but isn't strong enough to carry it. Basically weak Luffy. It makes for a great tragic and endearing character!
Despite how it all ended up as a system, the Warlords were-no STILL are one of my favorite dynamics within the One Piece world. I will always get excited whenever we see them as an introduction or as we see what they're doing currently. Nothing will change that!
As a concept, the Shichibukai were a great addition to One Piece as strong group of pirates in the One Piece world that didn't feel like generic pirates of an arc, meaning they didn't feel like just competing pirates that the Straw Hats would face every arc that would feel repetitive; you could sense the threat that they pose to other pirates, not just the Straw Hats. As an organization, I think the World Government shot itself in the foot with them by not being more organized or careful with them, not just by powers and trust but by placement and motive. Sure, Roger's Execution made most if not all pirates go for the One Piece but I'm pretty sure there were some who probably had no interest in the One Piece and were strong enough to keep pirates under control in their respective areas; meaning they should have at least recruited pirates in four of the blues and three in the grand line, which is where most of them were anyway but still. Even though they are pirates and wouldn't have been able to be trusted anyway, you would at least be able to stop rising pirates in the blues and grand line from gaining power efficiently. The only place on the grand line you probably couldn't have a Shichibukai in were in parts of the New World since the Yonko were present there the most but you at leas had more means of controlling the threat of rising pirates in the areas you could control
It's amazing how Oda keeps coming up with characters and story ideas that weren't part of his original plan, and integrating them in such a way that it's hard to imagine the story without them.

I always liked the concept of the Warlords in that they represented a pillar of power within the One Piece but also really showed how morally gray the world of One Piece is. I know some fans have issues with the live action adaptation but one thing I liked about that was how Koby had trouble reconciling the Warlords existence with the WG and the Marines wanting to protect the world against pirates but Garp saying you need to live with that inconsistency. It's something I wished could have been explored a bit more; even though we have characters, like Cobra and King Riku who very much made a strong case for why the Warlords are bad in taking advantage of the loop-holes. Still, for all the shortcomings I pointed out, the Warlords served their purpose well in highlighting the World Government isn't a perfect organization well before the Celestial Dragons' introduction, and that when dealing with rogue elements, like Doffy, Crocodile etc. it required the Straw Hats to tackle them due to their status outside the WG.

Oda said that the world and series got a lot bigger because of them. It was originally supposed to be only the Yonkous and Marines and considering that, it makes sense that One Piece would've lasted around 500 chapters or so like Oda initially thought.

What's really interesting to me is how Shanks' generation parallels Luffy's. The fall of Law and Kidd parallel Croc and Moria. Moria lost his entire crew, and so now has Kidd (supposedly). Whereas Croc was merely defeated, like Law.
Instead of joining the shishibukai, many of the supernovas go on to be henchmen of the Yonkou instead. Henchmen who go on to be rather unreliable when the shit hits the fan.
I hope that Oda does the Supernovas justice, and we see them by the end of the story how we see Shanks' generation now. I already view Bonney, Drake, Bege, and Law like that, but we need Elbaf to be Killer and Kidd's redemption arc. It also needs to introduce Urouge, and find a way to slip in Apoo. Apoo does have command of those failed ancient Giants, so maybe that's his in.

Makes me wonder, before Rocks, who opposed the WG? Small pirate crews I guess? That might explain why the WG is somewhat passive, they haven't had powerful foes for a long time and are slowly adapting to suddenly having a glut of them.
That's what I'm thinking was the case for the past 800 years since the Void Century, since Joyboy. Before Rocks, the only factions the WG didn't fuck with were the Samurai and the Giants. Wano and Elbaf remain, to this day, major islands dating back to the Void Century that remain unaffiliated with the World Government. And to this day, aside from Ryokugyu, the Marines and WG have refused to even attempt to annex them despite the WG knowing they exist.
Suffice it to say, besides those 2 islands, there was no force strong enough, no single entity, strong enough for the World Government to warrant any sort of attention that would lead them to make decisions to keep any sort of balance. There was no need. They were the de facto superpower of the world and everyone knew that. Those they could not control but didn't do anything with that power (the samurai and the Giants) the WG opted a "Live and let live" approach that worked out no problem up until now.
There were a couple scares, but nothing that lasted. The giant Pirates were simply a force of nature the WG couldn't contest. So they didn't, and the force left. Same with the Giant Robot (that's gonna do something soon) and Fisher Tiger. Both instances but never sustained like when Rocks appeared.
I can pretty much not blame the WG for fumbling the new era as much these days because, well, this is new territory for them. The Warlords were a bandaid to a new problem they've never faced and now it's all just falling apart on them.

Edit: It's also likely the WG expected the new Era to blow over. They've probably seen similar movements or attempts before. But Roger and likely Rocks created a much more powerful and enduring movement than they expected.
@Zanatos42 exactly. Much like other such events in history. Let time heal all wounds. Esp with immortals (allegedly) like Imu and the Gorosei, they could simply outlast any singular event and keep trucking. It would've worked even with Rocks because that event, much like the Void Century, was erased from the public history, but then Roger showed up and did his thing, that legacy persisted longer than anticipated (like you said) and they didn't learn to deal with the new and emerging circumstances.

I think it's interesting that Luffy was never offered the role as a Shichibukai. Obviously he would've refused but still. Would've been cool.
Luffy only really started to acquire fame when he attacked Ennies Lobby and by that point, they had declared war on the World Government. There's no way the government could hire him after that.
The moment Luffy attacked Enies Lobby, you COULD NOT make him a Warlord. It also should be noted that Blackbeard volunteered for the position by saying he would capture Luffy, so the Marines were in wait and see mode
@@kidkouga92, Black Beard was never truly serious about joining the Warlords like Doflamgino and Mihawk were, and he only joined to get White Beard’s Fruit and replacing White Beard in the new Yonko ranks unlike how Luffy rose to being a Yonko meaning that if the World Government didn’t want to make Luffy a Warlord for declaring War on the World Government they shouldn’t have made Black Beard and Law Warlords too.

@@kidkouga92 Actually, the mention of Blackbeard actually just made me realize that the meeting they were going to have was consider inviting Luffy as a Warlord since Mihawk only attended because he was curious about a pirate. As for the Enies Lobby thing, that happened way after. The meeting Lafiette interrupted was after Crocodile's defeat.
People forget that Luffy in his fight with Crocodile says “ I’m the 8th warlord of the sea” it’s one of the coolest drawings of Luffy up to that time.

The Warlords are the single most impressive thing Oda has done as a writer in my opinion. The way these characters drive and are connected to virtually every major plot point in the story despite being basically thrown in on a whim after One Piece had already been conceptualized still blows my mind.
I can’t even imagine what One Piece would look like without these characters and Oda had never really planned for them to be a thing at all. He just went back and threaded them all in in impossibly complex ways.
Now add in the other Supernovas beside the Strawhats and rethink the same thing. LIke WOW! Did you imagine that one of the Supernova would turn out to be the foster daughter of a Warlord? Did you imagine how another Supernova would be so deeply connected with a Warlord? I mean, just WOW... this is simply mind boggling!

I believe one of the early warlords is the Red Haired Pirates officer Rockstar because back in Rockstars introduction of him saying he was a pretty big player back in the day mirroring the later warlord Edward Weeble aka Whitebeard Jr. as an imitation of legendary pirate Rocks D. Xebec. As well as the Green OP Databook it was revealed Doflamingo was a originally a DJ and recycled the DJ idea onto Rockstar to be a literal rockstar.

My only complaint about the Warlord’s is that the institution itself is fairly underdeveloped. This is obviously due to them all being strong-willed and hard to organize but the point stands. This complaint is strongly offset though by each individual character within the Warlords being among the coolest and most interesting characters Oda has written in the entire series.
If by underdeveloped you mean they don't band together, then by whole means yes that was the point. But I disagree if what you're trying to say is that the concept of 7 warlords were not fully fleshed out. It took the entire first half of the grandline in order to meet and fully understand each of the warlords, complete with their goals, ideas, aspirations, etc. (except Kuma). NONE of them were actually working for the WG. Then by the halfway point we see all of them together on stage at Marineford. It's another case of a plot element or political structure that was used immensely to send a message

I would have liked seeing a bit more of their interactions, but yeah the others are correct about the organization being chaotic and the warlords wouldn't have worked together
It's not underdeveloped at all. It's actually incredibly well fleshed out, only Oda doesn't include a scene where it's all spelt out for us in boring detail. The fact that the warlords are a dysfunctional institution is the point. You can barely call them an institution.
By making pirates into warlords, the marines aren't actually taking enemies off the board and gaining allies. They were making uneasy truces, and using the prestige of the warlords as a threat against other pirates. We'll look the other way so long as you don't harm our interests and we get to use your name to scare other pirates was the deal. Hence why there is no real structure, just titles and the odd meeting that isn't even mandatory for membership. Besides Kuma, other warlords only attended those meetings for their own interest (edit: well, Kuma was attending for his own interests as we have seen, they were just much more noble interests. Kuma and Jimbei are notable exceptions to the norm). Like the titles, these regular meetings are practically just symbollic, something for the WG to report on if they choose to. The only time the marines ever really get to "use" these warlords they "recruited" (as far as we have seen) was at marineford, and that's only because each warlord had their own reason to be there. They didn't help the marines all that majorly in the fighting, especially when you consider the skill level of some of them. The warlords were never a cohesive institution working for the WG, that's just the impression that the WG wanted to give people in order to scare them into line.
The WG were actively working to replace the warlords with beings that could equal their power but would be obedient. You think Cobra and Riku could've gotten that vote through disbanding the warlord system if the WG didn't have a back up on the cusp of completion? That vote would've been sabotaged if the elder planets and Imu thought it would pose a huge problem to them. The WG was keenly aware the entire time that they did not control the warlords.
As a side note, this is why Garp sending Mihawk to the Baratie in the live action series is a crap scene that undermines both characters and misses the point of the warlords in one piece. It's like in absence of Don Krieg, they picked the laziest explanation for Mihawk to be there besides him just showing up (which actually might of worked better tbh). The guy playing Mihawk himself was pretty cool tho. That's just a tangent tho

I'd say the yonko do more to define the great pirate age. Not just because several major groups exist because of them, or get absorbed into them, but mainly for their existence represented the overall theme of this era: bitter compromises.

Introducing the Shichibukai was one of the best decisions Oda made. For me, they are by far the best organisation in all of One Piece and all of them drove the Story in their own unique way.
The Warlords have the best kind of freedom: Doing whatever the fuck you want while taking full advantage of the system almost without restrictions.

Considering O-Choku in the real world was a warlord I think Wang Zhi for a time was a warlord.
A new theory says that he sold weapons from Kaido to world nobles alongside Mingo. The world government found out that Akainu was planning to take over the pirate island, so they decided to prevent it by giving Wang Zi warlord status. Law somehow found out about this plan and saw an opportunity to become a warlord himself. He reached Blackbeard, convinced him to help in exchange for him becoming the ruler of the pirate island. Kobe happened to be on the island as well, sent to investigate the illegal arms trade when Law's assault began. Law opened the way for Blackbeard and his crew when he took Wang Zi's forces their hearts. A devastating battle began where Wang Zi despite his age gave a tough fight to the new emperor and his men. Kobe did something that caused Wang Zi to lose (maybe some of the civilians he rescued were Wang's wife and children, and he thought he was trying to kidnap them so he was going to attack him and then Blackbeard defeated him).

you can see how without any free spots on the warlord side, half the supernovas went and joined a yonko crew. all the rising pirates added strength to emperors. without the warlord safe harbor, probably also strong people like Jimbe or Boa would have accepted to join a yonko
I noticed you skipped buggy at 6:20 even though he was a warlord(even for a short time) he may have not earned it the traditional way but he did become one
He became famous following his masterminding the escape from Impel Down & being discovered he was an apprentice of Gol D Roger. He joined near the start of the 2 Year Time Skip & he was a Warlord until the system was abandoned. There were Warlords with shorter terms like Trafalgar Law. Black Beard was only a Warlord for less than 2 Weeks. Weevil didn't become a warlord until the end of Dressrosa which wasn't long before the Government ended the Warlord System.
Think about all the different factions that most likely formed in the WG concerning the Warlords. Some wanting to recruit more to strengthen their ranks, some rejecting the idea because they think it isn’t morally right. And at the end you come to the compromise of 7.

Small caveat that Roger Shiki Whitebeard were stated to be rivals with each other, not necessarily that they were “yonko” ofc but they could have had a similar level of infamy. After, the size of one’s pirate crew obviously matters a lot less when the potency is able to fight a whitebeard lol

They are basically a mini Yonko crew if they actually work together. A crew of 1 Yonko and 6 solid 3rd commander+ level pirates. If Moriah got his life together he'd actually be a force to be reckoned with, but even as his fat lazy self he still is crafty with a good fruit.
Crocodile, Boa, Doflamingo, Moria,
(Jinbe), all have entire organizations/crews/soldiers/gangs/underlings/zombies to fill out the fodder army they need.
