    Thank you for the video. I am totally inexperienced when it comes to any appliance repairs. Within the first minute of watching your clip, I turned the garbage disposal ON, put the DW on DRAIN, turned the dosposal ON for 15 seconds, and ran a regular load. There was no stagnant water, and the dishes came out clean.

    Please tell your father thank you so much from me! I saw water pooled at the bottom of my dishwasher and immediately panic set in. I have a lot of anxiety. After watching the two videos you shared about this, I had a much better understanding of how this all works, and I realized that water had backed up from my sink. I had previously watched other vids and they said to clean this and that out. Tried it and it was still there. I kept looking for more info and came across your videos. I have the hose he described that goes from the disposal back to the bottom corner of the inside of the cabinet. I set the dishwasher to drain, it did, and it's fine now! No more pool of water! 😁

    I have a brand new Bosch dishwasher that I hardly use. When I was looking under my sink, I noticed that the drain line going into the disposal from the Bosch had water in it. The water is nice and clean. The drain reservoir is empty and the filters are nice and clean… the dishwasher is effectively brand new. Less than one year old.
    I reset the cycle and then manually did a rinse and drain cycle… I was able to see the water being flushed through the hose since it’s a clear hose. After the cycle, there was still water left in the line.
    Is this normal? And if not, what should I look for? There are no error codes in the dishwasher is great at washing the dishes… No performance problems. Justice water sitting in that hose that’s bugging me.

    My E24 code popped up right after replacing the disposal under my sink.
    Long story short, there’s a knockout plug on the disposal where the drain hose goes into from the dishwasher. Make sure you remove that when replacing the disposal or you’ll get that code.

  • @CRQF
    @CRQF 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Is it possible there’s a check valve in the hose at the pump outlet. That was my problem” kitchen aid” in the videos the check valve was not mentioned, I never knew it was there until I removed the hose, small chicken bone keeping the valve open. I had the loop under the cabinet and I don’t have a garbage disposal. Not allowed in my city 😌

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’m not a repair man for dishwashers but as far as I know there is not a check valve on the dishwasher. Rinsing your dishes well before you put them in the dishwasher will save you a lot of grief later. I know they tell you there is a disposal in the dishwasher, but it’s not very good. Don’t believe what you see on TV.

    • @CRQF
      @CRQF 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Every dishwasher I have researched has a Check valve somewhere in the drain line to prevent water from flowing back into the dishwasher, the standing water in the drain hose after the cycle is finished I mean. I’m my case it’s in the hose replaced hose problem fixed. Some dishwashers it is easy to replace the check valve others are harder and more expensive as is mine.

    I have a thick black hose coming from my dishwasher going to my garbage disposal. I'm far from a plumber but logic tells me that this is the hose that is meant to withstand heat from the hot water. I suspect my clog is in this hose. There's a separate clear skinny hose that leads to the air gap.

  • @wcaboutre355
    @wcaboutre355 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It can also be the water inlet valve. I tried all of your steps and they didn't fix it. I replaced the water inlet valve on the dishwasher and the problem was fixed. Your steps are good to follow first and to be ruled out.

    Hello Jim, the hose elevation advice was just what I needed. Thank you!! But I have 2 quick questions: (1) now that the water has been bailed and absorbed completely out of the bottom of the dishwasher - do I need to sanitize or disinfect the dishwasher parts before running another load of dishes?... and (2) does the standing water from the garbage disposal remain because the drain for the dishwasher only opens at the end of the washing cycle, and then closes again?? Thanks again!!

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi tubetop36, quick answers: 1. Put dishwasher soap in and run it empty. That should probably sanitize it. 2. When you turn on the dishwasher, it starts the cycle by pumping out the remaining water from the previous cycle. If the drain is looped above the garbage disposal, you shouldn’t have any water draining into the dishwasher. Glad you benefited from my advice. Here to help!

    I think this was my problem with old dishwasher and has become a problem with my new one the hose takes a downhill out of garbage disposal I had enough slack to go up then turn it back down through cabinet to dishwasher my question is when I run a complete cycle will the water run out of dishwasher back out the other way to drain now that the water will be going up hill a bit more to garbage disposal

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as the hose is 6-8 inches above the garbage disposal, you shouldn’t get any water back.
      When the hose is low, the water in the sink will push it into the dishwasher. I hope you understand what I’m trying to say.

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  ปีที่แล้ว

      @reginalomeli7447, if I’m understanding you correctly, you removed the dishwasher but you didn’t plug the hole where the dishwasher drain connects to the garbage disposal. If you bought a new garbage disposal, the hole is already plugged at the drain. If you can reuse the old garbage disposal, buy a dishwasher connection which is a rubber hose which is tapered three times and comes with clamps. Then buy a Pex plug 1/2” or 3/4” and insert in rubber hose and clamp it down. If the garbage disposal connection is broken, then you need a new garbage disposal.

    Thank you for providing this information. The visuals were very helpful as well as the background of understanding how the system works. Mine is working again for the moment, but couldn't find any clear blockages in the system. Using a shop vac and pulling air from the air gap side I was able to get an airflow between that point and the elbow that joins to the pump/impeller. I couldn't get one going the other way so I'm thinking there is a check valve somewhere in between that is out of sight short of pulling the whole machine out of the cabinetry. Eventually, the airflow produced a high pitch whistle so I'm hoping that means some obstruction came clear. Running the drain cycle with clean water it emptied the reservoir down to nearly empty in the bottom of the machine below the sensor so I'm thinking it may reserve a small amount of water to keep the impeller primed. Thanks again for sharing a lifetime's worth of professional experience.

      Ernie Bruss, could you hook up the drain hose to the kitchen sink drain? If you can, bring the hose through the lowest point of the side wall of the kitchen cabinet and extend it up to the bottom of the countertop and then down into the garbage disposal inlet or a branch tailpiece. The way you have the drain hooked up now, I recommend you put a 3/4” swing check before you dump it into the drain line in the basement. However, I rather have you do it the first way I told you.

      I am Edwin, is there water in the bottom of your dishwasher? A new dishwasher probably comes with a built in air gap or the manufacturer put a loop in the drain hose so the water can’t get back into the dishwasher. If you have these, you don’t need an air gap or check valve. If you have water in the dishwasher, then you want to put a loop under the sink before connecting to the garbage disposal.

      It sounds like your sink drain needs to be cleaned so it can get rid of the water from the dishwasher. The water can flow very well out of a dishwasher if it’s working correctly. If it’s a two compartment sink, the drain from the disposal to the other sink drain should have a baffle tee where the two drains are connected.

      Brady, I think you need to call the Maytag Repair man or buy a new dishwasher. I don’t think it’s the drain line but a dishwasher issue.

    Hi! I hope someone can help me 🙏 Where can I find the check valve to place between the garage disposal and drain pipe #3? I found the quiet check valve shown as an example but it was only for a sump pump which is to big. Thank you in advance!

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dipika Dhaduk, you don’t need a check valve. It sounds like when you use the garbage disposal the water backs up into the sink. What you need is what we call a baffle tee. When connecting two or more sinks where you bring them together you need a baffle tee. When you buy a kitchen sink waste kit, the tee has a baffle on the inside that directs the waste water downward. When you tie the disposal drain to the other sink, you put a baffle tee in the vertical position. It’s about a $5 item. You should be able to find one at a hardware store or big box store. I hope you understand this. There is no check valve for a kitchen sink drain.

    I have water in my dishwasher and water leaks out from under my garbage disposal. What could be causing this?

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jonathan, if water is leaking from the bottom of the disposal, it probably is coming through the motor. Time to replace it. The water in the dishwasher could be caused from the drain hose. Check and see if the hose runs above the inlet to the garbage disposal. You want the drain hose above the inlet. Or, you could have a plugged air gap.

    • @MrGcharping
      @MrGcharping ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jmm1817 No problem. Basically, when I installed the new garbage disposal, I did not make sure the drain line from the dishwasher to the garbage disposal had a loop or section that was higher than where it connects to the garbage disposal. This keeps the water from flowing back into the dishwasher.

      @@MrGcharping thank you very much for the response I just learned that my problem was I had to remove the plug on the new disposal I was unaware of that I guess they come with a plug where the dishwasher hose goes into so you have to remove the plug in order for it to drain LOL

    my samsung dishwasher goes thru the complete cycle find but then fills with water several hours after it was dry inside. if i just run the drain function it drains fine. i cant find a leak. the drain hose high loops looks fine its around 18 inches off the ground under t he sink and i klnow it isnt pinched. any ideas?>

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      J R, is the drain hose higher than the outlet of the garbage disposal? You want the drain hose hooked to the bottom of the countertop. Your dishwasher could have a bad solenoid valve that is not closing completely. That is the valve that controls the water coming into the dishwasher.

    Isn't an air gap required by code?

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some places do require air gaps. The newer dishwashers don’t require air gaps. When I was working in Michigan, the state did not require air gaps. They required you to loop the drain. 90% of air gaps have been replaced with RO faucets.

    • @TheGrumpyPlumber
      @TheGrumpyPlumber  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      P Charm, the first thing you want to do is to remove all or as much water from both sinks and put a large pan underneath the disposal and the drain to catch any water you can’t remove. Remove the j-bend and then disconnect it from the garbage disposal. You will probably find the clog in the baffle tee that connects to the other sink. Good luck! I’m glad to hear you have a plumber in the family!

    You forgot to mention that the trash compactor has a plug that has to be removed if it is new. You punch it into the compactor with a blunt rod and allow it to be crushed by the compactor.

      Maybe try eliminating the air gap. Take the discharge hose from the dishwasher and run it as high as you can before you connect it to the garbage disposal. Leave the air gap in the sink for show. The plumbing gods are rooting for you.
