Man. This brings me back to my youth. Doing 350km or more three week trips in the middle of Quebec in an old 85 pound aluminum Grumman Canoe and an old canvas pack. I even had a black lab with a white crest named Ruby along for the ride for company and warmth. Never seen a dog tree more black bears than her. I could almost taste the sand in the tea and feel it in my sleeping bag while watching this. Not to mention that soaked to the bone feeling from paddling for hours in the pouring rain. Very few people know that incredible feeling at the end of the day when you're muscles burst with ache and you crawl into that dry sleeping bag inside the warm tent. Paradise. I was even jealous of those palm blisters in your hand from working the paddle all day long until they hardened like leather baseball gloves after the first week or so. So glad I watched this. Oh to be young again. You're living the good life lad. Enjoy every minute of it.
It’s awesome to see the actual setting of “The Lure of the Labrador Wild”, and to see the land where Leonidas Hubbard, Dillon Wallace, and George Elson made their historic trip.
Hello Justin my fellow Canadian wilderness brother, when I watch your videos, I feel the warmth and passion you have for the woods,I'm getting old now and unable to go to the woods anymore. Watching your videos takes me back to my younger years when I was full of "hot piss and vinegar"....thank you soooo much for putting tears in my eyes and a big smile on my face when I watch your videos, may God Bless you my outdoors brother.Thank you for making an old man feel young again.........Cheers!!
Thanks for your interest Perry and Mrs Perry. Was on another winter expedition for 32 days. Series will be back up and running next weekend with the remaining 5-6 episodes coming every 10-14 days after. Take care all the best 👍
I have been so excited about this series. It is spectacular from episode one. Amazing, amazing, amazing. Your face when you said "we're in the big land now." was everything! Love to Saku.
I'm stuck in southern California city life... blessing and a curse, but I love the outdoors, have been to Alaska a few times with my grandparents when I was young (not saying it's exactly the same as newfoundland, but reminds me of it) and want to bring my 7 yo daughter back someday, hopefully many times... Long story short, watching your videos brings me back, brings back the emotions and feelings of being there, stuck in tricky spots while we were canoeing, encountering bears, the beautiful untouched wilderness, the bugs, the plants, the trees, the views, The extreme tides, the unfamiliar schedule of the sunlight and short nights. Your videos evoke emotion for me, so thank you... And of course Saku. Great job on your content, I know that it adds a lot of extra work to your exploration, but sharing with the world is truly beneficial.
Thanks a lot Ryan, appreciate you sharing that story and glad to have you for the adventures. Hard to beat life outdoors. All the best to you and yours - Justin
Man oh man... right out of the gate you have us enthralled! Saku is like the jackrabbit in the shallow waters! Awesome start to the series, can’t wait for the next episode. Deadly stuff!
I'm 74 and have no way to follow in your footsteps, but I sure enjoy going "with" you in the videos. God bless you and Saku - may He keep you safe and secure on all your trips. Rick in Corinth TX
A true adventurer, nothing but respect to you Justin. As a avid outdoors lover, this just fills my heart with love and happiness. The challenges you must have faced and overcome cannot be understated, its hard world out there and you pushed through every inch of it. Congrats brother, there aren't many people in the history of the world that have seen the beauty you have, that my friend, is the rarest of gifts. Godspeed brother!
WOW, rugged and so beautiful in that black bear country. Hoping it gets a bit easier for you and Saku. A water dog extraordinar! You both exhaust me after an hour or so. Also, it's nice to know the decisions you make for yours and Saku well being is great and a relief! Better safe the sorry my father always said to me while escaping beyond our back yard which was thousands of arcers of forests in every direction with lakes, rivers, creeks and wildlife that I love, love, love to this day. The most Northern parts of California. I could ski in the morning, day and be on the beaches in the afternoon. I always thought, a cool combo but never wanted to life there. Higher elevations is where my mind and body sings! Less humans, more wildlife, the better I like it. Once we know the ways and character of the wild the safer I feel among them.Jeessh, enough about me, Thanks for the ride, Justin!! Blessings, BE safe, BE well, Keep on, Keppin On....... (smiling)
Justin... Absolutely incredible. What a journey thus far. Not only are you battling the rivers but those storms were crazy... when I seen you setting up your tent so close to the river I had a gut feeling that that could happen and it did... Can't wait for the next episode... Dennis, Canoehound Adventures

I am looking forward to this series thank you.
I live in Labrador I Read the book Lure Of The Labrador Wild. They took the wrong river back then. I always wanted to see what some if these rivers were actually like. Exciting first Episode. Crazy how the water rose up to the tent that night. Looking forward to the next Episode!
Thanks for the adventures....Spectacular sunsets, misty mornings, velvet nights with the flaming fire and delicious spotted trout. Saki is a great companion..He loves it too.
Many Props, (as my husband says, from 1 older man to a younger man). Bless you and Saku. Can't wait for the next one. Sending Love and Blessings to You and Heather and can't forget the pup kiddos. From Kentucky U.S.A.
You know when you set camp in between the rain storms, I knew you were too close to the river. But you were lucky. In 1981 I lost everything in a flash flood and had to hike out, virtually ending my adventure in the Adirondacks. I was lucky to make it out alive. I never made that mistake again. On a more positive note, Your editing skill is getting so freaking awesome that I felt like I was with you and Saku. Good job mate! I enjoyed every minute and find myself thoroughly grateful for your generosity and diligence for the sharing of this adventure. Thank you and God Bless, Greg
Brought back a lot of memories of bygone years. In the early seventies I did medical clinics in NW river twice a year, that was the era of cable car crossing the river. Also remover a number of moose hunting trips into granite and Victoria lake, on a road in through Miller town that often did a bad job on our camping equipment. While living on the west coast and northern peninsula my wife and i spent the best part of fifteen years canoeing, salmon fishing and camping in the main brook and rodickton systems. Keep up the good work, looking forward to seeing your next posting. Dan
I'm 70; everything aches, and I move slower but I spend my whole summer hauling my teardrop behind my car dry-camping and kayaking at lakes and rivers as far from people as possible. They'll have to take me out on a stretcher.....and likely will. But til then my evenings are spent with Justin and Saku on adventures that are... SuperNATURAL!
CBC doesn't put out anything close to these quality of work these adventures gives us folks. Thanks Justin for sharing. Looking forward to the next video.
Beautiful! I’ve only just come across you and your channel Justin - recommended to me by a couple of Newfoundlanders. Absolutely love it - real adventure, true grit (and a fair dosing of sand!) love that dog too! Thanks man.
Incredible first installment of what promises to be an exciting series! I actually got your book for Christmas but I would love a copy for my grandfather. He was born in St. Anthony in 1935 as a British citizen. He'll be 85 this year and sadly, was recently diagnosed with cancer. He hasn't been to Newfoundland in years and it's doubtful that he'll make it back in this life. I think he'd really enjoy your book and I'll certainly be sharing my copy with him. Looking forward to the next video!
Not gonna lie, watching this is very emotional for me! For having traveled by kayak in the area myself about 8 years ago, a dog in less and starting from the sea (in Minganie, Quebec), watching this is something very special! Had to put aside the adventurer side of me for a while in order to make a living, and now to see to free like that, with your dog on top of it... just wow! I'm so envious my brother! Just found your channel and I'm barely 12 minutes in, but I had to pause and express my gratitude for that video! Also as a side note, I don't understand how you managed to film it all, while in a boat, while having to deal with a dog on top of it! Props to you for that alone! Can't wait to watch the whole thing!
Thanks man really happy to have you along and glad I could strike a chord with you there. More vids to come I hope you get back on the trail for a journey soon. Take care all the best.
Been waiting to watch this Justin. I'm halfway through and I am amazed! I would be scared s***less!! I can't believe how calm Saku is. You two make a good pair...now back to watching. What a great way to spend my Friday night!! Thank you!!
God lord thats a tall challenge there, Newf!!! Youve got the right attitude for it and the guts. You must be the only one or very few that show us Labrador.. the best kept secret in our great Nation. never met anyone from the Rock that i didnt like. I worked the Alberta oil field for years and the place is jammed packed with "landers" looking forward to the next video. Well done
Literally just found this an hour ago. A simply amazing video. I liked, shared and subscribed. Now I'm off to binge watch the other videos. Gonna be a long night. No regrets.
I'm seeing a side of Saku that i've apparently not fully noticed until now - he's really matured into a fine, strong adult dog. He seems to be getting around like a real wilderness canine athlete at peak performance; almost a bit wolf-like sometimes! It's obvious that you are taking great care of his nutritional needs. That Inukshuk dog food must be some kickin' stuff. Lovin' the series A LOT!
Great first video Justin ! What a trip, you really gotta love it, b/c that was some hard work ! Old Saku seems to be enjoying himself too. Beauty trout at the end. Thumbs up from myself and Wendell !
I remember when I discovered you Justin... It was the 700km trip and I was lucky enough to watch all episodes except one, which I had to wait for, in a row... I remember waiting for the notification with a sense of excitement.... I can see this happening again and again as I wait in suspense for this wonderful adventure! Thanks so much. I gather there is a huge history of Irish involvement in Newfoundland, as the songs and the people, and even your own accent, hints at. Would be wonderful if on one of your upcoming trips that you could describe some of the history (I know you've touched on it somewhat). Anyway, take care. Love from Australia
Hey Nathan. I'm very new to Justin's channel and from comments like yours it seems like he has a great group of subscribers. I would also be interested in hearing what he and his family know about their history in the area. The people of Newfoundland and Labrador are the most kind, warm and giving people on the planet. generous people you could ever have the good fortune to meet.
Justin you are a real life wilderness super hero. Thank you for taking us along. I love to watch your adventures with your amazing Dog Saku.... You are such a down to earth, charming young man. All the best, I know you've got this👍❤
Episode 1 was even better than I expected!! Can’t wait for the next one. My heart rate jumped a few times especially when saku ends up going down river those couple times 😂. Awesome job Justin... I would choose your videos over any tv show out there 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Justin, fricken amazing brother. Watching that bank erode and the rain as well as the river flow after was crazy. Saku is also amazing to have on the trip. MSR Hubba Hubba one year saved us, a storm rolled in and water around the tub was 6" and we stayed dry in the tent.At 32:41 that drop in the water is all too familiar when lining, and its, dont let go of the canoe....that canoe as well is trooper Justin....looking forward to the rest of the trip.....Fred ,Thunder Bay,Ontario
I only began to watch this and I am already impressed. No long, rambling intro, straight to the point. Beautiful camera work, matching music if you know history. I am really proud of you, traveler! Thank you for sharing your world with us!
Really appreciate that it helps a ton. More than most think. Liking, commenting and watching the whole vid is huge too. Watch it more than once is an even bigger help if you feel the need ; ) Thanks for watching!

I subscribed to your channel about 3 weeks ago and I’ve watched almost every video you’ve posted. I was anxiously awaiting your Labrador adventure. This in my opinion is the best channel on TH-cam, keep up the good work buddy! I really like to live vicariously through you 😁 shoutout to the Newfoundland Explorer from a topper explorer in the U.P. of Michigan. The UP is a beautiful week wilderness but man is Canada a beautiful place. I would love to make it there one day.
I"m so glad the adventure has finally begun! We sure got a good laugh when you went digging for gold up your nose, but all you found was sand! The terrain looks very rugged and beautiful. Can't wait to see more!
So glad to see you off on another adventure! You and Saku hooked me with the Newfoundland expedition - can't wait to see what you guys encounter on this one!
My gf and I watch every video before we go to bed in the evening. Very excited to watch the first episode of your long journey. Loved it. Can’t wait for #2. Reminds me of me, my dad and my son here in Illinois as we wade the rivers catching catfish/small mouth and large mouth bass!
What a fantastic series! You've done it again. I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed watching this. The journey itself has got to be incredibly difficult and on top of that you're filming with multiple cameras and watching out for the incredible Saku. Even though I know you finished the journey some time ago, I'm still on the edge of my seat wondering if you two are going to be ok. That's incredible story telling. Great job!
You and Saku are wonderful together. Thanks again for sharing your adventures, and the raw beauty of the east coast! You make us Canadians so proud to be Canadian. Your what life is about Justin! 🌲🐶❤
Funny, as I was watching you set up the tent after the first storm, I was saying out loud, "don't pitch that camp so close to the river, cos it'll rise for sure.......and voila'.... I've been caught like that before. the narrower the river, the more it rises in a storm. Bon voyage buddy.
@@magnussandstrom3874 first spot was on a lake so water wouldn't rise there the same way. Trackless thick woods along these waterways, not an easy to find a good spot after 10 + hours of solo travel! Thanks for watching.
Thank you Justin for sharing your love of this part of the world with us, and for taking us along on the journey! It wouldn’t be the same without Saku!
Quite the adventure! During my years as a Conservation Officer I flew over that area many times but you have captured an exciting and interesting way to experience the Big Land. Congratulations.
Another awesome show Justin, very well done. These shows you produce should be on TV. Better than most of the shows on tv that I see. Can’t wait to see next part. Cheers
Justin....I did something like this in Maine about 20 years ago. Had a graphite/Kevlar canoe about 17 foot 19 pounds. Put an electric motor and some deep cycle marine batteries in it. I was only out about a week and called it quits after 3 days of steady rain, sold the canoe and took up fly fishing. Looking forward to watching all the episodes. Peace and Good Dog.
I, like many others, have been patiently waiting for this series and with just the first episode, you certainly delivered. I love the outdoors but could never envision doing a trip such as this. That's what makes it so great to be able to tag along with you and Saku. Why you do not have 4 times the subscribers is amazing to me. Well done and thanks. Cannot wait for the next one. All the best....
Damn!! When you were filming in the tent at night during that second storm along the river..I said outloud..I wonder if he is worrying about that river coming up in a flood!! Holy crap dodged a bullet for sure bud!!
So the adventure begins! Oh boi! It wasn't easy terrain to portage in, 3 hours/50 yards I would have cried a bit! It's really amazing to follow your journey Justin, you're a true wilderness explorer!

Justin, thanks for your channel sir, and for sharing your adventures. You have the best outdoor channel out there. My favorite due to your unflappable and positive attitude. No one has put in the Kilometers, blood and sweat like you have. I Love it! Keep up the good work my virtual friend!!
Although the money would be good for Justin I think most of those TV shows are too fake. They spend days waiting to get a so called great shot or waiting for the right weather to get a drone up. They also create artificial scenarios to make story and misrepresent those stories with editing and narratives. I think he does a fantastic job on his own...you know it real this way and he isn't staying in hotels overnight with a camera crew.
A grand start my friend. Funny thing. I live in a big river area. And when it was pouring down I though "he`ll be lucky if he aint got his toes in the water come morning" Ha sure enough. LOL. I`d like to ask why you choose to start down river. But then again, where would be the adventure in making it easy eh?
If you plan on travelling a long distance in a canoe the old way eventually you have to go up a river to go done the next. May as well start that way. Thanks for watching Craig!
Love it! I have 1 question? Are you naming the routes your taking? You should! Many routes were named by explorers! I suggest the Saku trail! Keep it going!

Many Props, (as my husband says, from 1 older man to a younger man). Bless you and Saku. Can't wait for the next one.
Sending Love and Blessings to You and Heather and can't forget the pup kiddos. From Kentucky U.S.A.
Thanks Harley, happy to have you along for the journey 🚣♀️ All the best from Newfoundland 🐾
Man you are a beast. Nothing but respect to you and Saku. I love your videos and would love a copy of your book. Best of luck on your next big voyage!
Watched it again on the BIG screen👍👍
Tough to imagine a better travel companion than Saku. A special dog for sure.
Appreciate it Henry.
"And we are off" I kid you not when you said that i got goose bumps, Excellent first video thanks
Thanks John glad to have ya
CBC doesn't put out anything close to these quality of work these adventures gives us folks. Thanks Justin for sharing. Looking forward to the next video.
Right on as always!!!!!From Duluth just South of the great Superior. Thanks for sharing.✌️❤️🕊️
At last! Another Justin and Saku adventure. I'm sure it'll be worth waiting for.
Very much looking forward to this epic journey! I'll say thank you Justin before I even begin!
Beauty 1st episode Justin. Looking forward to more episodes, but don't feel the need to rush. These are worth waiting for.
Best damm show/series to watch in Canada or any were THANKS !!!!!!!
Really appreciate that comment glad to have you
Thanks for the very nice clip I enjoyed watching it glad you made just fine yay! Happy trails! 👍🏼👌🏽🙏🏽⛺️🌲⛺️🍜☕️
Thanks Ted happy to have you!
Can't wait for the next episode. Loved your Newfoundland adventure as well. Greetings from South Africa.
Thanks Zin really appreciate it : )
Rad man! What an awesome trip. Lab's been on the bucket list for far too long. Looking forward to the remainder.
Episode 1 did not disappoint, loved it. Saku is a machine, gorgeous spec.
Thank you!!
Thanks Cathy, nothing to it. Happy to have you along for the journey 🚣♀️ : )
Well done
Thanks for sharing that and watching. Happy to have ya a long for the ride. Take care all the best 👍
Literally just found this an hour ago. A simply amazing video. I liked, shared and subscribed. Now I'm off to binge watch the other videos. Gonna be a long night. No regrets.
Happy to have ya! 🍻
I crossed Labrador on foot in 1998, so your images remind me of many memories
I would choose your videos over any tv show out there 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
A fabulous adventure! Better than any television show. You and Saku are the best. Thank you for sharing your Labrador adventure!
Absolutely love seeing a dog so fulfilled. My BC loves our Northwoods trips
Amazing! I’m so happy this series is out.
I only began to watch this and I am already impressed. No long, rambling intro, straight to the point. Beautiful camera work, matching music if you know history. I am really proud of you, traveler! Thank you for sharing your world with us!
Happy to have you thanks for the comment, series resumes this coming weekend ! See you then
Everyone remember to share this! Justin doesn't get near enough views.
Really appreciate that it helps a ton. More than most think. Liking, commenting and watching the whole vid is huge too. Watch it more than once is an even bigger help if you feel the need ; ) Thanks for watching!
@@JustinBarbournlexplorer I discover'd you a while back from a recc by fellow Canadian TH-cam bushcrafter Joe Robinet...BEST advice I ever took-was hooked from day 1...have sent out shares on several of your videos since, and ALWAYS hit that LIKE button!
Agreed
@@Gumpmachine1 Thanks 🚣♀️
@@JustinBarbournlexplorer I'm on my second time. I watched the "Across Newfoundland" videos and now i'm back here cuz i forgot what happened. Love your videos !
Friggen awesome man...Love it !
Thanks brudder 👍🚣♀️
I absolutely loved episode 1 and I know I will do the same for all of them. You are my my all-time fav on utube. And that’s the truth!!!
Thanks so much Julie!! Spread the seed. Happy to have you! : )
First episode shows a tough slog. We love watching your adventures with Saku.
Thanks so much, we're happy to have you : ) 🐾
I subscribed to your channel about 3 weeks ago and I’ve watched almost every video you’ve posted.
My phone autocorrected yooper to topper 😜
Excellent! Can't wait for the next episode. Thanks! Saku-what a companion!
I"m so glad the adventure has finally begun!
We sure got a good laugh when you went digging for gold up your nose, but all you found was sand!
The terrain looks very rugged and beautiful. Can't wait to see more!
hahaha thanks for watching
So great to see another series with you and Saki boy!
So glad to see you off on another adventure! You and Saku hooked me with the Newfoundland expedition - can't wait to see what you guys encounter on this one!
Thanks happy to have you along for the journey 🚣♀️
Great job!
Thanks for tuning in Aaron all in a days work. Take care all the best buddy 🚣♀️
Same, on both two first tent spots. 😬
@@magnussandstrom3874 first spot was on a lake so water wouldn't rise there the same way. Trackless thick woods along these waterways, not an easy to find a good spot after 10 + hours of solo travel! Thanks for watching.
Nature in its purest form. The experience in its purest form.
Wow Justin it’s even better than I. Expected it s awesome , you’re doing a great job
Thanks Jimmy, happy to have you along for the journey 🚣♀️
Thank you Justin for sharing your love of this part of the world with us, and for taking us along on the journey! It wouldn’t be the same without Saku!
Thanks happy to have you along 🚣♀️
It’s going to be a great series
Quite the adventure! During my years as a Conservation Officer I flew over that area many times but you have captured an exciting and interesting way to experience the Big Land. Congratulations.
Appreciate the comment Harry! Would have loved to have you and your guitar along. Thanks for watching take care all the best.
Awesome video, per usual. Keep doing what you’re doing! The drone addition is a very nice touch. Go Bruins! Haha
Another awesome show Justin, very well done. These shows you produce should be on TV. Better than most of the shows on tv that I see. Can’t wait to see next part. Cheers
I've been waiting for this! Doing it tough man, nothing like the sound of rain on the tent with a warm mug in your hand though...
Can't beat it thanks for watching Ben 👍
Justin....I did something like this in Maine about 20 years ago. Had a graphite/Kevlar canoe about 17 foot 19 pounds. Put an electric motor and some deep cycle marine batteries in it. I was only out about a week and called it quits after 3 days of steady rain, sold the canoe and took up fly fishing. Looking forward to watching all the episodes. Peace and Good Dog.
Thanks for posting this, Justin. It reminds me of doing my (much shorter) canoe camoing trips as a young man.
That was a very exciting beginning! At times I felt nervous, even though I know you made it back alive. Hahaha Nice trout reward at the end.
Thanks
Thanks Roy happy to have you along for the journey 🚣♀️
I, like many others, have been patiently waiting for this series and with just the first episode, you certainly delivered. I love the outdoors but could never envision doing a trip such as this. That's what makes it so great to be able to tag along with you and Saku. Why you do not have 4 times the subscribers is amazing to me. Well done and thanks. Cannot wait for the next one. All the best....
Thanks for the comment Terry we're happy to have you along and give you the experience. The subs will come 👍Catch you in the next one
Damn!! When you were filming in the tent at night during that second storm along the river..I said outloud..I wonder if he is worrying about that river coming up in a flood!! Holy crap dodged a bullet for sure bud!!
Craig Rock same , I was worried about how near the tent was to the river , he got lucky for sure
So the adventure begins! Oh boi! It wasn't easy terrain to portage in, 3 hours/50 yards I would have cried a bit! It's really amazing to follow your journey Justin, you're a true wilderness explorer!

Right good stuff there Justin! That beauty...WOW!!! Looking forward to watching the rest of your amazing adventure.

Very happen to have found your channel. I envy your trip. As a labradorian I Can't wait for the next episode and here's to hoping you take us along on your next adventure.

@@JustinBarbournlexplorer dandy!!
Can't wait.
Thanks Justin!
Excellent news! With everything that’s going, we need a boost!
True
Justin, thanks for your channel sir, and for sharing your adventures. You have the best outdoor channel out there. My favorite due to your unflappable and positive attitude. No one has put in the Kilometers, blood and sweat like you have. I Love it! Keep up the good work my virtual friend!!
Would like to see one of the major networks picked us up and send a camera crew with you same trip awesome stuff
Looks like a great trip! Young man, you are living life! Good on you!
Great first episode. Well worth the wait for its release. Looking forward to seeing more. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for tunin in 👍
Love it! I have 1 question? Are you naming the routes your taking? You should! Many routes were named by explorers! I suggest the Saku trail!
Keep it going!
Nope just moving forward and taking it all in. The land needs no names she speaks and represents herself. Thanks for watching take care all the best
We have been anxiously waiting to see your Labrador series. We love your videos.
I've been counting down the days for this! Very excited - thank you J and S! Any plans for a second book (or third if we're being accurate)? Cheers!
Second book on this expedition is in the works. Thanks for asking and watching Thomas 👊🚣♀️
Great video, thank you so much! You sure are working hard. And Saku, what a dog. Thanks!
