Sometimes it's not as simple as that. Especially for providers living in rural or suburban areas with a limited number of minority patients. As a provider, we are bound to have that occasional negative encounter no matter what the patient looks like. Black patients can be problematic as well.
OR nurse here. I experience similar treatment when I show up to get the patient from Pre-Op. Working in an environment where there are only a few Black nurses, and no Black surgeons or anesthesia staff. Like you, I’m like, I’m here to take care of you. Do you want the help or not.
My dear friend and study buddy is Latina. One day while we were working on the floor a patient said”& where did you go to school?” I answered for her, we both went to the same school and graduated with honors.😂😂😂😂 you dun got the wrong today hunny!
A patient was telling the staff and I a story about being assulted and she included in the story; "I was beaten until I was as black as Felicia." I'm Felicia.🤦🏾♀ The wonderful world of being a BP🤷🏾♀
I was seen by a NP at my gyno appt last year. She is Black American. I thought I had a good rapport with her. I have been going to this gyno for years, only seeing the MD. A couple of months ago, I went to the appointment fully expecting to see the NP again. Instead, I saw the MD. After my check up, I went to the front desk and saw the NP there. I said hello and she was polite as well. But I found it strange that that she was not my provider that time around. I thought maybe I had offended her when I asked her title. I hope it was just maybe that she doesn't accept my insurance any longer and not that she got offended. She did a very good job otherwise..
To make matters even worse I am usually the only black person in the clinic I work in and although I come across black patients from time to time and they seem excited to see me. The staff seem to feel the need to make comments about my hair, the things that I wear as (they give compliments) but it’s as if they are hyper focused on me.
The world we live in… I didn’t know that I was a little black child until I went to school back in 1976 when the white kids in Spanish kids told me I was black 🎉then I found out what this world was about so it’ll be OK
There are many people who feel uncomfortable being seen by an NP instead of an MD. It may be a combination of your race and your credentials. I'm a black woman and I would ask to be seen by an MD.
I’d say the experiences that I discuss in this video are more race-related because of the particular community that I’m working with & their minimal exposure to AA people.
That’s in your experience. I don’t agree. NP have way better bedside manners than MD. This is something I’ve noticed since I was a teenager at community clinics. At any rate neither of our experiences can dictate what majority of people would prefer. NP are an essential part of health care.
@@rubystruth That's your personal experience and I can't invalidate it. I was misdiagnosed by an NP. They definitely are an essential part of healthcare. Bedside manner doesn't lead to any significant improvements in health outcomes.
I can agree. I am a black woman (and a Podiatric medical student) and I also prefer to see the MD/DO. For me, NPs can be off putting because they think they are a medical doctor when they have a doctorate (two completely different things) and often end up prescribing things/doing things they aren’t comfortable with simply because they think that “Dr” title gives them the authority to. Now I will say this is a generalization and I have experienced GREAT NPs!
Im living a night mare with white nurses, my skin is lighter than yours so as long as u are not white u are done. Its so sad and ridiculous, they dont teach u, they want u to stay behind, they cant see someone difrent doing a better job or at a higher level. I will continue with my edu next year for NP lets see how it goes. I live in ohio , an a area that we are supose to have more black or mulato than white this means they dont wnat to work there. My fist week as a nurse all those whites were looking at my badge RN BSN. It does affect u a lot. They peobably dont say it but u can see it in their eyes. I almost quit too.
Ugh, I know the feeling very well and it's so discouraging! Try to hang in there, but it it gets overwhelming, don't hesitate to find work elsewhere where you'll be appreciated instead of always having to look over your shoulder and feel uncomfortable at work.

OR nurse here. I experience similar treatment when I show up to get the patient from Pre-Op. Working in an environment where there are only a few Black nurses, and no Black surgeons or anesthesia staff. Like you, I’m like, I’m here to take care of you. Do you want the help or not.
Exactly! I try not to let it frustrate me
As a Latina, they look at me like I don’t even belong in this country.
I’m so sorry that you’re experiencing this! It’s not right
My dear friend and study buddy is Latina. One day while we were working on the floor a patient said”& where did you go to school?” I answered for her, we both went to the same school and graduated with honors.😂😂😂😂 you dun got the wrong today hunny!
ITS WORST FOR BLACKS
A patient was telling the staff and I a story about being assulted and she included in the story; "I was beaten until I was as black as Felicia." I'm Felicia.🤦🏾♀ The wonderful world of being a BP🤷🏾♀
Ughh 😡
Maybe it was a scheduling change?
To make matters even worse I am usually the only black person in the clinic I work in and although I come across black patients from time to time and they seem excited to see me. The staff seem to feel the need to make comments about my hair, the things that I wear as (they give compliments) but it’s as if they are hyper focused on me.
Yes sometimes it can feel like a spotlight! I say, if people are going to talk, might as well give them something good to look at 😂
you could definitely be a voice model on the side
Really?? Haha
The world we live in… I didn’t know that I was a little black child until I went to school back in 1976 when the white kids in Spanish kids told me I was black 🎉then I found out what this world was about so it’ll be OK
We all eventually get that reality check. Yours just came a bit sooner than mine!
I tried to reply back to your comment and I kept getting an error message. But yes, unfortunately this is going on in 2024. 😢
The Asian community ?
