i love the movie and i love charlie as well, but i feel like we definitely should not celebrate his cultural appropriation. like “nuwanda” is not a quirky alt name to go against your white parents, it’s appropriation of a culture you think is “untamed.” i love this video otherwise tho
It's not cultural appropriation, it's a joke. And who the heck here is "celebrating" it? Like nobody's hosting a dinner party or anything because of it.
I'm not a dub kinda person. For as long as I remember, I've wanted to watch movies in their original language. I always wanted to know what the original title was. I'm not a native speaker, I'm italian, but as soon as I knew english enough, no more dub in my life. This film though. The dub isn't better, but THE TITLE. Let me tell you. It's just so poetic and heartbreaking. It's called "L'attimo fuggente". Now, carpe diem means "size the moment" and in italian is "cogli l'attimo", with "attimo" meaning "moment"; "fuggente" means "that is running away, that is escaping". This movie is called "The escaping moment". What a sad beautiful joke. For their moment was just there, but they couldn't size it.
This is one of the coolest comments I've ever received!! Thank you for sharing this info with us! I think the title sounds so...bittersweet? Such a sad but wonderful phrase. :)
Oh! Reminds me of the title in french, which is 'le cercle des poètes disparus' (the circle of the missing/vanished poets) ^-^ translations are pretty fun
also, dead poets society is translated in italian with la setta dei poeti estinti which isn't exactly the coolest title for a movie- but yeah FUCK I LOVE OUR VERSION OF THE TITLE SO MUCH. i swear, it's one of the most beautiful movie title translations i've ever came across.
Ok but Charlie highkey serenaded Knox with their saxophone that one meeting and then the director went "oh no was that too gay? better have Charlie tousle Knox's hair like they're bros." I mean come on, it was so obvious tbh never thought I'd be in tears over TWO gay ships from this movie
i think another aspect that made me fell in love more to this movie, is because i learned the fact that Robin Williams got hooked in playing the role of the professor because he wanted it to be the professor he always wanted. and that made it more magical and wholesome. cause genuinely, i don't think we really hate learning. we might hate school because some teachers are not passionate enough about the courses/subjects they teach (other than that, they're full of crap lol)or that the school environment makes it feel like learning and failing feel like a punishment. but mr. keating is not just there to teach what format sonnets are comprised of, or what better words to rhyme a certain word to, debate on whether who's the greatest poet to have ever lived. no. he tickles the brain of his students and lit up a flame of creativity so they too get inspired by, despite of everything, the beauty of life and make great poems about it. i love him. i really love that character and Robin so much.
im so glad my senior highschool teacher made it an assignment to watch this film. i've been meaning to watch it ever since i saw it as clips somewhere else, and omg the creativity it gave me. drawings, poems, short stories, photography, and so much more. i was just smiling all the way through the film and i was smiling too as i was writing my essay about said film. it now has a special place in my heart. now i just have to read the book.
ILY. I fully believe Cam has a little thing for charlie but he hates it and he's in denial and I fully believe that he is overly hated. This is his first time being included the poor thing. Also Keating and McAllister had a thing I am 100% convinced
Cameron definitely doesn't deserve any of the hate that he gets. Totally agree about him and Charlie. Every day I'm sad there isn't a DPS prequel where we learn about Keating. :)
This movie made me smile in a sort of happy and nostalgic way. Besides the heartbreaking end I wanted to be a part of them and I was truly inspired. I wish I was one of the dead poets so bad
This was one of those movies they used to make us watch year after year at highschool, and I loved it and also had it at home, so I saw it A LOT of times. Never ever got any of the queer subtext back then, and now is so fucking obviously there that doesn't even feel like the same movie I used to watch
Cool video! Dead Poets Society is my favourite movie too! It’s literally a ✨masterpiece✨. I always quote “Carpe Diem”, and I kind of double-quote “But room, fairy, here comes Oberon!” because I’m quoting one of my favourite Shakespeare plays, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and quoting Neil 😂💛
Shakespeare and DPS fans unite! Midsummer Night’s Dream has been my favorite Shakespeare play long before I ever saw DPS, so I relate to quoting it twice as often now. Glad you enjoyed the video! :D
something i feel everyone does and understand is shutting off the film after the curtain closes after the play. only seen past it twice i watch dps three times a week
“We don’t read and write poetry because its cute…We read and write poetry because we’re members of the human race…And the Human Race is filled with passion… Medicine, Law, Business, Engineering…These are noble pursuits, and necessary to sustain life…But Poetry, Beauty, Romance, Love…These are what we stay alive for… That you are here…That life exists…The powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse…What will your verse be?…” One of the greatest monologues of all time… Keating❤
Freakin love this movie and these boys... but I'm honestly tired of people making any close male friendship into a romantic one. I didn't see that at ALL when I watched this film. I saw a beautiful representation of something most modern people don't understand anymore: true intimacy in friendship. Most young people nowadays don't HAVE friends, by their own admission, let alone ones as close and intimate as this -- can't expect them to recognize it when they see it, I guess. I said what I said. You don't have to read romantic subcontext into every instance of intimacy.
i love the movie and i love charlie as well, but i feel like we definitely should not celebrate his cultural appropriation. like “nuwanda” is not a quirky alt name to go against your white parents, it’s appropriation of a culture you think is “untamed.” i love this video otherwise tho
YES absolutely! I had no idea of the cultural appropriation when I made the video, but I totally agree with you. :)
he's my favourite character and a gay hot mess but I was super uncomfortable watching those parts of the movie
You are all joking, right?
That isn't cultural apropriation
It's not cultural appropriation, it's a joke. And who the heck here is "celebrating" it? Like nobody's hosting a dinner party or anything because of it.
