For accurate results, It is essential to know the emissivity of the material you are trying to measure. You may find more materials emissivities by googling the word "emissivity". Metals have a low emissivity, especially when highly polished. unless covered with an anodized or oxidation layer.
Not sure what IR wavelength the thermometer sensor operates at, but comparing the reference table printed on the instruction manual with the published literature, I am GUESSING it is in the range 8-14 microns, but this is only a guess, I could be completely wrong. Any way It works great as far as I can tell, but the instruction manual should refer to the IR wavelength.
Also, when not in use keep in the box as it will protect it to some extent from dirt and shocks.

Good review. The only info I'm missing is:
I'd like to know if it remembers the F/C setting between switch on/off cycles or it always starts F and you'll have to switch to C every singe time it's turned on?

it stays at the last used, so no swapping every time you use it

I just purchased one.. so do you hold the trigger down until the scan is complete then release for hold

The only thing that drives me crazy is the beeping! Do you know a way to remove that sound? I love the gun but not the noise.

The hardest thing for me was getting it open to insert the batteries. I had another thermometer but it was so slow to give me a reading. I use it for induction cooking. I know what the cooker says but thats not the temp of the pan on it.
