  • We took a day trip down to the famous Khaosan Road in Bangkok.
Let's just say we got a whole lot more than we had bargained for...
    DISCLAIMER:
The purpose of this video is to make other tourists who are new to Thailand aware of this as we certainly weren't when we arrived and almost got caught out ourselves.
Similar scams operates all over the world and this is in no way a reflection of the Thai people. On the contrary, the people of Thailand are some of the kindest, warmest, generous and most hospitable people we have ever had the pleasure of meeting and interacting with.
Stay safe out there, and as the saying goes, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
    Peace and love A&Y x

Advice, Do NOT stop and talk to anyone approaching in the street in Thailand,, once you stop , you are already 50% fallen into their trap

Worst scam is when they tell you the Grand Palace or certain temples are "closed" and they can take you to other temples and usually a store the scammer is connected to via an overpriced tuk tuk.

If you’re a foreigner, but speak Thai most of them will not scam you, and be impressed that you can speak.

There is business TukTuk in Thailand here that make a deal with shops to take foreigners to them and the driver get extra money from shops. Normally this not extra charge for the foreigners but it wastes the time so just avoid it

That's painful to watch. Newbies: ANYTIME you are getting time pressure and other kinds of pressure ("but today special day!!") from a tout, it's bad news. Touts in general are bad news. Just say "mai ao khap/ka" and walk away. Does it make sense that they're getting so excited over charging you 20 baht? No it doesn't, obviously. They're getting excited for the kickback money they'll get from the shops they're going to drag you to that you don't want to go to.

You never take TukTuk in Bangkok. They generally charge significantly higher than the taxi and being white does not help just like being Asian in Europe. Notice Thais rarely take Tuktuk? You always do what the locals do in order to get the cheapest price. This includes taking you to massage parlor and silk shops. They are always making commission just like the Las Vegas Taxi driver to take you to places where juices are offered to them. All of them in the world are the same. Use public transportation and you'll be fine. It used to be alot worse when we had to negotiate with the taxi before the meter being installed. We are talking about 30 years ago. I hated Khaosan road since this is where the seediest place in Bangkok with poor tourists. Go to place where wealthier tourist hang out for the best value items. Do the 5 star travel like the Oriental of Bangkok for once in a lifetime experience.

If some people approach you with a map in their hands in Bangkok, 99.99% they would be scammers. They like to approach foreign tourists, especially western/caucasian one. And your look is matching with their target, lol. Thanks for warning this out. As a Thai, we also get scammed too. Not by people with the map, but there are call center scammers calling us from time to time.

    ยังไม่เลิกโกงนักท่องเที่ยวกันอีก เดี๋ยวนี้เค้ารู้กันหมดแล้ว

I lived there for 13 years and afraid It is normal for that area unfortunately and I never found the hype about Khao San Road, dodgy as anything but was good during the Songkran. Its ashame some of the TukTuk drivers are genuine but its ruined because of these scammers.
