  • Quick disclaimer. This video is not like our usual vlogs. It is the story of how we were scammed in Bangkok and what we did to reclaim most of it back. We also have some advice what to look out for and what you can do if you find yourself in a similar situation.
Sorry this video is so long we had allot to cover and felt the more detail we could give you the less likely you are to fall for our silly mistake.
Our next Vlog will be back to normal as we have much more of this amazing country to explore and show you.

Originally from the Wirral, North West England we got married in 2012. After a few trips abroad we caught the #travel bug. In 2019 after 6 weeks in Japan we decided we were going to quit our jobs and take some time out to travel full time. After many delays due to the pandemic, in 2021 our dream finally came true and in November we set off on our journey.

You are a lovely couple. So genuine and thank you for the time and trouble you have taken to tell your story. I am aware that the number one scam in Bangkok is for tuk tuk drivers tell tourists that the GRAND PALACE is "CLOSED". I warned my sister-in-law of this potential scam prior to her visit to Bangkok and lo and behold she fell for it. Her driver said that he could take her to another 'similar' Temple. She stupidly agreed to go and she as taken through various back streets where there were no tourists and she became very anxious for her safety. She was taken to a shop where she was urged to buy something. She then demanded that she be taken back to the Center of the city. She was scared. Take heed.

Wow...what an experience. I used to live there in Thailand - so I feel for you guys. I was in India last week (8 days New Dehli and Agra), Late 2 days from missed flight, and I had a tour guide take me to all the temples sites - they took me all the unwanted stores - even a low-key massage place. I stood my ground and said no (as experience traveler I KNEW what's up) I didn't even go to the massage place. Sketchy. I had two open days left for Agra (Taj Mahal), and needed consolidation with no hiccups - got it done. Sometimes you got to weigh out your options. Imagine going in to get a basic massage at an unknown/unlisted massage parlor then a girl tried to mount you after. And they are asking for prostitute money even if you didn't ask for anything else. RED FLAGS everywhere!
The tour cost me double than normal. Fine...the experience is what I'm after in the limited time. No point in getting lost or catch the wrong train. Best to have some sort of guide. Afterwards I found out a few places my driver didn't pay for my ticket to a few sites and kept the money. Told me to take pictures outside. He was a nice guy, BUT like all scammers-untrust worthy. He even contacted me days later in message app that he lost the tip I gave him and needed money for medicine for his daughter. Gotta laugh at the situation. (Blocked him)

The tourism police wasn't very helpful, as they state that it can't be proven that the tuk tuk drivers and the other actors work together with the TAT or the suit shop. We are sorry that they were not as helpful in your case as they were in ours. The only thing I could recommend with the tourism police is to email them with an in depth description of the whole chain of event from start to finish. That is what we did and they called us back the next day. Their email is 1155callcenter@gmail.com
If that gets you nowhere the only other thing I cam recommend is to contact your bank and launch a disputed transaction claim. The bank may be able to reverse the payment are give you your money back that way.

A few I feel like would be scams near the airport is when the grab cancel's on you maybe I am right or wrong but after a few minutes when they ask you to cancel instead of them cancelling, I feel that might be one.*

To be fair the Tuk Tuk didn't charge us extra. It was the travel agents pretending to be a government run organisation. The Tuk Tuk driver agreed on a price but took us to businesses that he would get a share of any sales.

The money was taken off of my debit card rather than my credit card. Most banks in England have now signed up to a scheme that guarantees to refund fraudulent payments, however the bank that this card belonged to has not yet signed up to this scheme.
If it had been taken off of my other bank card or my credit card the refund process would have been so much easier.

Ok you are new to Bangkok, this kind of scam happens a lot near the kings castle, they say it’s close but it’s not, then they suggest something else that is 10 times more expensive than usually it is. Another lesson you can learn is don’t take any advice from tuk tuk guys or taxi drivers, any attractions that they suggest will be 10 times more expensive than normal. Taxi drivers at night also like to not turn the meter and overcharge a lot. Apart from taxi drivers and tuk tuk drivers, Thailand is very safe

@@LostKnox It really is. But what happened to me I havent been able to see anywhere else. I wanted to go to the grand palace and didnt know u couldnt wear shorts. So I was told by the police there to leave. Right after that a man just told me to go to big bhudda instead and I thought ah what a goo idea. and after walking for a long time towards the big bhudda an old man came and told me there was a protest going on up ahead. So it was far away from all the tourist places. But having now watched the Scam city documentary about it, I think it's clear that the man who told me to go to big bhudda probably told his group about me, and they were driving together in the tuktuk trying to find me haha. But in the end I'll just give the necklace to my mom and say its real hahah and she'll be happy

we are generally really trusting people and were a little naive. since that day we always research new locations and have not fallen for anything since.
