Coming to think of it, everything in this video is retired. It was great experiencing these buses in person. This was real equipment compared to the plastic thats running around now
Dude! You have me reminiscing on these buses. I was still in school around this time. I am originally from the Alameda County area but live in the Celano County area now. I remember taking the 28 bus from Mission Valley shopping Center to my old school California school for the blind in Fremont California back in the day with those type of buses. This is great. I’m going to subscribe to your channel.
Ninja Bus Fan Go to 11:20 for SamTrans 9898, a 1984 Gillig Phantom 40TB966V92. (6V92TA/HT-740). After that, watch the whole video and nearly cry like I did. BTW, this is very close to the streets I filmed that early 1990's MCI 102C3 at.
Ninja Bus Fan I know right! That Flyer bus that passed by was a 1984 Flyer D902 (one of Muni's loudest buses ever). Did you get the other 1983 Gillig videos?
Ninja Bus Fan Well SamTrans still has ONE left. It's 852, a 1984 Gillig with the original powertrain. It's an art bus now, but still works. Yeee, D902 and yes that was loud. Good.
That Flyer D901 around 8:45 is the shit. Listen to that Cummins 903 engine. You are so far the only person on youtube to have a recording of a Cummins 903 Flyer. Good Job
ah the good old buses. the old phantoms, d60HF, even the old d40LF or d40HF. oh how i love the old detroit engine buses. to bad most of them went cat rather then detroit sad.
Right before AC Transit started to get the NABIs. Wow. I was born just less than two months before this video. I remember the NABIs dominating lines like the 51 and 88, while the Gilligs and New Flyers (my favorites) were on their way out, around 2001. Only 6 years before the VanHools showed up :shudder:.
@Elon McFall Yea i Miss The MVRTA 1996-1999 Gillig Phantoms With Detroits diesel Series 50s From new England USA The 1996 Gillig Phantoms Were all Gone By 2009 And The 1999 Gillig Phantom were all Gone By 2012 i Was So sad When These Buses Retired.
These were real buses with real engines. This crap that have today doesn't even compare to these buses. I love the engines. SF Muni just retired the last 1993 Gillig Phantoms that they got from AC Transit in favor of these POS new buses.
If anyone wants these classic 90's ac transit buses back, ac transit can rebuild them again. Just complain that you don't like the new ac transit buses because there's not much room and seats and have everyone vote to bring back the 90's ac transit buses. I so want them back!
I wish high floors were still made! They were much more comfortable. I despise low floors. It is worth a 2 min wait for handicapped lifts if it means comfort for all!
Is it true that there were hardly any Flxible Metros in the Bay Area, even in 1997? Seems like much of the buses serving these Bay Area region agencies were Gillig Phantoms, which is rather unsurprising since Gillig is California-based.
I know I'm way late on a response. Golden Gate eventually sold 1171 (along with 1175 and 1180) to RTC in Reno, and it ran between Reno and Carson City for a while.
Ahh, the good old days when buses were actually buses that had real engines like the 6V92TA and Series 50. The crap that they call buses these days don't compare to these older ones in quality and the way they sound. Who cares if they are older, they will always be better than the new modern "buses". The newer "buses" turn me off, they are too quiet and they look bland and they also don't have any character to them that the older ones have. They don't make them like they used to.
LOL NovaASSes, never heard of that before. I both despise the Low Floor Scrap and the XcelsiSHIT. They are not real buses, they are POSes pretending to be buses.

All... That... Equipment!!!! And drivers who drove the hell out of them! I approve of this entire video!

That sounded so tight. Throughout the video all I heard was that infamous 6V92TA scream.
Ninja Bus Fan I know right! That Flyer bus that passed by was a 1984 Flyer D902 (one of Muni's loudest buses ever). Did you get the other 1983 Gillig videos?
TheCRTman Yea, to bad they are gone though :/ and so it was a D902 :O and it was so loud man. Yea, I got them.
Ninja Bus Fan Well SamTrans still has ONE left. It's 852, a 1984 Gillig with the original powertrain. It's an art bus now, but still works. Yeee, D902 and yes that was loud. Good.
TheCRTman What's an art bus ? Didn't even notice till you mentioned it and it was super loud.
dang i even like that 900 or 901 series bus been on a few when i was way younger. to bad they are all gone
The 1900 series New Flyer arctics are still in service with AC Transit and currently the oldest in the fleet.
I'm glad that I don't have to ride them anymore those 1900's. Retired.
That Flyer D901 around 8:45 is the shit. Listen to that Cummins 903 engine. You are so far the only person on youtube to have a recording of a Cummins 903 Flyer. Good Job
Wow man I love this video it's got the 6V92 and S50 Buses in this joint! :-D
51 is AC's busiest route

Yep--both 2-stroke AND 4-stroke Detroit diesel engines!
These were real buses with real engines. This crap that have today doesn't even compare to these buses. I love the engines. SF Muni just retired the last 1993 Gillig Phantoms that they got from AC Transit in favor of these POS new buses.
***** Yep. Actually in 2002 AC Transit repowered the 1991-1993 Gillig Phantoms with new engines, but they've all been retired as of 2009. :(

This almost reminds me of when I was livin' wit my moms back in 1993, goin' 2 GWU 2 visit my great-grandmother.
Man Those Were Great Times.
The Gillig at 5:02 sounds damn good.
I wish high floors were still made! They were much more comfortable. I despise low floors. It is worth a 2 min wait for handicapped lifts if it means comfort for all!
11:10 you can literally hear an M.A.N articulated bus in the back ground.
I like the gillig phantoms and the new flyer buses 🚌
Can anyone tell me wjy BART dosen't have express bus serivce?
hell yeah a 7B route at 11:01... thats my route number of the bus i take here on Long island lol.

@JiaLinBraswell I'm sorry back in 2006 I moved but. But what happened to it?
10:15 bus 1171 is awesome. unfortunately Im sure the bus doesn't exist anymore
Mike C a unit was preserved
I know I'm way late on a response. Golden Gate eventually sold 1171 (along with 1175 and 1180) to RTC in Reno, and it ran between Reno and Carson City for a while.
Are BART bus drivers contracted out by a private bus agency?

Agree, but i heard that the Gillig BRTs aren't very good.
Yup, it isn't like a Phantom or a Low Floor. I have never ridden on a Gillig, so i don't have much of a opinion except of what i heard about it.
Ok. The older LFSes (second gen) are also like that.
repoman_71 yea I miss the Older buses, I feel absolutely disappointed When the buses From the 1990s are gone.
