    Carl, well done !!! to your Son, as an Australian Queen Scout I know the work he has to put in to get this far and you are correct, scouting will give him skills he can use all of his life. Thank you for another great box, you started me off on my journey as a wood turner several years ago as you were the first you tube I looked at, since then, other turners like Capt' Eddie and Mike Walsh have also contributed to my skill set. I love turning boxes and hollow forms keep them coming

    Your son has made a life changing accomplishment. Congratulations to him, and to you for what I'm sure was motivation.
    As for your young wood-turner, WOW, what a fabulous project, and to begin only a year ago. This young man is on his way to success.

    Fabulous about Cameron. My son made Eagle many years ago and it still represents a great accomplishment in his life. Of course, as his Scoutmaster I was pleased to see him and several of his fellow Scouts make Eagle.

Thank you for the generous donation of your time and talents. Keep up the great work!

Found it funny that I found your channel and love it so much (Born in Coquille, now residing in Indiana). You were already an inspiration Carl, even more so now that you have raised an Eagle Scout. Nice box, Carl. That's always been one of my favorite things to turn. Something very satisfying about turning a beautiful piece of wood into a beautiful box with a well-fitted lid. I have a little pill bottle I made out of massaranduba probably 12 or 14 years ago that I have carried in my lunch box for all that time. The lid on it still "snaps" when I put it back on.

    It's a little hard to see in the video, but what tool are you using on the inside wall of the box to make sure it is straight? Also, how do you insure that the bottom of the box and the wall are at a right angle? Many thanks.

    Always a pleasure watching you turn... And yes, I'm another that watches to the end, but occasionally I may fast forward a bit. It is easy to see you are proud of those young men. A side question, is a 4x4 redwood post ok for practice turning a box like this? It should be large enough, easy to get at any big box lumber yard, and give me a lot of turning blanks to build up skills. What do you think? Thanks again.

    • @CarlJacobson
      @CarlJacobson  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Thomas Lindgren Thank you Thom! I don't think the Redwood you find at the box stores is the same thing, I think you're talking about pressure treated wood. It probably not a good idea to turner it without a respirator.

      +Carl Jacobson At Home Depot they actually have multiple kinds of 4x4 posts, pressure treated, cedar, redwood and douglas fir. I try to stay as far away from the pressure treated as I can unless I am building something that is coming into contact with the ground or concrete.

    how would you recommend finishing the inside without a round carbide scraper? All I have in terms of scrapers is a bullnose scraper that I cant quite get the angle right on when working on narrow vessels like this.

    • @CarlJacobson
      @CarlJacobson  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +howycwap I used a round nose scraper for years, if you have a tool rest that will will go inside the piece that really helps.

    • @howycwap
      @howycwap 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Carl Jacobson I cant make contact with the cutting edge of the tool since its such a narrow vessel, it only makes slight contact with the corner

    Hi Carl, just a quick question. At the 2 min mark you use the round carbide tool, and I see that you are plunging straight in and not on any angle. I have tried this but get nothing but catches. Is the RPM a factor in using this tool. I was using it on pine so I am not sure if that is the issue also. Thanks and I love your work.

    I am gathering as much information as I can to try my first box. If you dont mind does sanding with the walnut oil help fill course grained pockets in the wood? Or is it purely dust control?

    • @CarlJacobson
      @CarlJacobson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's just for the dust and as a finish it wont fill any voids.

    • @Ruser7367
      @Ruser7367 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a lot of Oak readily available which has very open grain. I will try the walnut oil on birch, you dont show it but do you sand with just one grit and is there drying time between segments of the project?
