Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodturning and woodworking, ties it all together. We do a lot of epoxy projects as well as woodturning.

My son made it to Eagle Scout too (had to force the issue), but after 4 years in the Navy he admitted it was one of the best things I'd done for him. Congrats to your son - he just elevated his character, potential and confidence by 100%.

Beautiful box Carl! Great tutorial too. I haven't turned too many boxes, so I always like seeing walkthroughs to refresh the steps. Nice box, Carl. That's always been one of my favorite things to turn. Something very satisfying about turning a beautiful piece of wood into a beautiful box with a well-fitted lid. I have a little pill bottle I made out of massaranduba probably 12 or 14 years ago that I have carried in my lunch box for all that time. The lid on it still "snaps" when I put it back on.

I got a lathe as a 15th birthday present best present ever
Congrats to your son. My son is an Eagle Scout, too. When he went to his first job interview, the VP was impressed since he was an Eagle Scout, too. Of course, my son got the job. Nice little redwood box. That looks like a huge forstner bit in the pic. I guess I blink too much to see which EW tools you were using except for the parting tool. :)

+Carl Jacobson . thanks for the tool info. I really use both the starter and midsize detail tools a lot. I have a complete set of the Harrison carbide tools also. I use them a lot but also find that I use the standard tools just as much. I'm sort of at the itermediate level. Your videos are really great. Thanks for sharing your talents with us.

Thank you very much Andrew! I now sand with Doctors Walnut Oil, it captures all the sanding dust and put the finish on at the same time.

It's a little hard to see in the video, but what tool are you using on the inside wall of the box to make sure it is straight? Also, how do you insure that the bottom of the box and the wall are at a right angle? Many thanks.
I used a #1 hollower for the inside of the box base, and a square carbide for the inside of the box lid. www.easywoodtools.com/products/

Always a pleasure watching you turn... And yes, I'm another that watches to the end, but occasionally I may fast forward a bit. It is easy to see you are proud of those young men. A side question, is a 4x4 redwood post ok for practice turning a box like this? It should be large enough, easy to get at any big box lumber yard, and give me a lot of turning blanks to build up skills. What do you think? Thanks again.

+Thomas Lindgren Thank you Thom! I don't think the Redwood you find at the box stores is the same thing, I think you're talking about pressure treated wood. It probably not a good idea to turner it without a respirator.

+Carl Jacobson At Home Depot they actually have multiple kinds of 4x4 posts, pressure treated, cedar, redwood and douglas fir. I try to stay as far away from the pressure treated as I can unless I am building something that is coming into contact with the ground or concrete.

I believe in beginning turners to take on making lidded boxes because the process involves so many of the necessary basic skills of turning. Lidded boxes are really very useful and subject only to the turners imagination.

how would you recommend finishing the inside without a round carbide scraper? All I have in terms of scrapers is a bullnose scraper that I cant quite get the angle right on when working on narrow vessels like this.
+howycwap I used a round nose scraper for years, if you have a tool rest that will will go inside the piece that really helps.
+Carl Jacobson I cant make contact with the cutting edge of the tool since its such a narrow vessel, it only makes slight contact with the corner

Is starting out with the Wood Peck Carbides recommended. I like them
I don't think so, you'll get a better finish with Easy Wood carbide

I think a 14 in lathe would work great for bowls and plates.
Charming absolutely charming box Carl, great video I love watching your channel. I'm new to woodturning...I don't have much space so I bought a Clarke 13" mini lathe, it's great for small things like pens etc, I would love to be able make some small bud vases, bowls etc for donation to the CRY charity in the UK - Cardiac Risk In The Young.
Any tips ideas for small woodturning projects would be greatly appreciated, thank you again for sharing your videos they are so inspiring to me.

I see a very long gouge that looks like a scraper behind you, it looks like a Henry Taylor tool. has a dark handle with red diamond on it. What tool is it and were an I buy one.

+Guy Smiley Hi Guy, Yes it mineral oil, I start with 150/180, 220, 320, 400, and finish up with 600.

First you use the mixture of sand and oil, then wax only. Hug and very good living.
Thanks for the video. I just started turning and recently gave a lidded box a try. I'm using carbide and had a hell of a time avoiding catches on the inside. If I kept my tool on center to flatten the bottom I would catch on the side edge. If I kept it below center to do the inside edge, I would catch on the bottom. I ended up working above center and keeping my round tool at an angle and it seemed to work. You seem to do the inside with the tool completely flat? Any advice to what on earth I was doing wrong?
Thank you Rob! What tool are you using? I hollow with the #1 hollower and try to make a very light cut for my finishing passes.

What is the mixture you use when you wet sand. Jim's wood shop.
