      @@FixandMaintain I just did this change on my bike last week. Your video was great, and THANKS for posting. It was made very easy by your vid. My only advice to others, watch this video a few times. Go slow, and layout the screws and collars in such a way that you know where they go back...some of the bolts holding on the plastics are of different lenghts. Lastly, my only tough part...which wasn't that tough.....was rotating the catch can around enough to train. I eventually got it, but that might be one watch out from some. Alternatively, you could discoonect the hose fitting at the bottom of the catch can and drain that...which I didn't do...I didn't want to mess with trying to get that back on. Thanks again.

    Good vid, thanks. For $9, I think I'll reuse the crush washer too. I'd use your link for the Honda Type 2 coolant, but bc it's a gallon but the bike only takes a quart, with the 3-5 year change interval, I'd look at that gallon of coolant for the next 15 years...LOL.

      Haha, yep. As you could see from the video, I just used Prestone from Walmart that I diluted to 50% with distilled water myself. It was left over from when I changed the coolant on my truck. I do use the official Honda 10W30 oil, since it’s actually very reasonably priced on Amazon: amzn.to/3H9igjV

      @@FixandMaintain I was just in the garage giving my bike a good going over because I’m going on a ride this weekend. Adjusted the chain a bit, clean and oiled the chain, checked air pressure, and all fluids.
      It’s when I was checking the fluids that I noticed that my overflow tank for the coolant was really low. Like lower than the low line low. I did check the radiator and coolant was right to the top.
      Any cause for concern? I am overdue in changing out the coolant.
      Also, since I don’t have time to do a change before my ride, are there any issue with me topping off the overflow tank with the proper 50/50 mix? The original blue stuff from the factory is in there now. I don’t think I can get the real Honda stuff before the ride, so will any 50/50 be okay to mix with what’s in there?

    • @FixandMaintain
      @FixandMaintain  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@waltermitty7452 let me preface that this is simply my opinion and I am not certified in any way by Honda. I wouldn’t mix any different types of coolant. If you want to make sure it’s good for this weekend, but are planning on changing it anyway, just add distilled water to get it up to the appropriate level. As long as temperatures aren’t way below freezing, you’ll be fine. Definitely drain and refill with a 50/50 solution as soon as you can, but that should get you by for now.

    • @waltermitty7452
      @waltermitty7452 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FixandMaintain I hear ya. The more I researched this, the more and more folks said the same thing….don’t mix different kinds and if you need to top off s short term…do it with distilled water. But the good news is, I actually found a place near me where i can get a bottle of the Pro Honda stuff. So I plan to top it off and hit the road today.
      Sometime soon I will do the complete change out as I am overdue. Your video will make it a lot easier. Thanks.

    Thanks for all the vids! After inheriting all kinds of tools from my grandfather, and after watching a bunch of your vids, I have been able to change the battery, change the oil and oil filter and now moving onto the brake fluid and coolant.
    A question; do you have any idea what the torque spec is for the coolant drain bolt? I see that you do it loosely by feel, I guess, but for an amateur like me... I'm not sure I have that feel. Do you know what the exact Nm torque spec if for the coolant drain bolt? I bet it is around 10nm but I could not find any definitive spec.

      @FixandMaintain  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You're welcome! So, I didn't put the torque spec on the video because I couldn't find it anywhere either. I'm guessing it should be close to the 12 N•m of the oil filter cover bolts. But, it does have a crush washer, so I don't know if that changes the torque spec any...

    Hi how do you know exactly how much is needed? Fill radiator first then top up reservoir? Is not dangerous to run the bike with radiator open?
    All the video is with cold bike right?
    Thanks

    • @FixandMaintain
      @FixandMaintain  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1.08 US Qt or 1.02 L is the total capacity according to Honda. I didn't measure myself, just poured it in until it was full and until the reservoir was within limits. Yes, the bike should be cold when first filling the reservoir. It doesn't hurt the bike to run it with the radiator cap off, but if you run it for too long after filling the radiator, you will start to spill coolant on the ground thanks to thermal expansion.

    Im draining my coolant and putting Yamacool 60-40 in mine for the winter so it dont freeze. Do I need to flush out the cooling system or can I just pour the new coolant in after draining? Also is there a manual way to open the thermostat to get the coolant flowing?

      I haven't ever used Yamacool, but I would suggest flushing the system any time you're changing coolant types. As far as the thermostat goes, the only way to open it is to get the coolant up to operating temp.

    Will anything happen to the bike if you just add coolant without doing a whole coolant change ?

    • @FixandMaintain
      @FixandMaintain  ปีที่แล้ว

      If its not time to be changed and doesn’t look like it needs to be changed, but getting a little low, no problem. Just add 50/50 coolant and distilled water (or pre-mixed coolant) until it’s in the normal range (DO NOT mix types of coolant, make sure it’s the same brand/type!!!).
      Coolant over time can become conductive by picking up trace amounts of metal and also the corrosion inhibitors it contains can lose their effectiveness. Thus the recommendation to change the coolant every 2 years/24,000 miles to reduce the chance of corrosion. Is every 2 years a bit too often to change coolant? Probably, but that’s what the engineers at Honda recommend.

    • @FixandMaintain
      @FixandMaintain  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It turns out it is significantly cheaper to buy a gallon of concentrate and a gallon of distilled water to make 2 gallons of 50/50 mix. I prefer to use the container it came in to store it, hence the “50/50 mix” written in sharpie on the top of the container. I made extremely clear as I was adding coolant in the video to use a 50/50 mix, and the product link in the description is for a 50/50 coolant solution.
