I grab fish by the gills (check out the lingcod video on this jetty). But you're right I should always be doing that on the jetty so I don't lose fish. I don't use gloves though. My hands are like leather.
Pretty purple fish. They look like nice enough for a tropical aquaruim. Did the one you lost get stuck in a cavern? I really like the spicy mango. 👍🏻 Who doesnt like butter? 🤣 Be careful on the rocks. Nice fishin man❗️
If that happens again where a fish falls into the rocks you could try tying on only a treble hook to your line and reel all the way to where the shank of the treble is through the first eyelet on your rod. Then you can just stick your rod down there and hook the fish. May or may not work depending on the geometry of the rocks but Ive done it in the past to pick up an ID card that fell through a storm drain and it worked (I covered the hook in electrical tape to stick to the card but the principle is the same). That looks like a great meal btw, I think Im gonna do a catch and cook one of these days.
Thank-you. You should. I've done the same thing. Never thought of putting the tape on it though. Will have to remember that one. I didn't have any trebles with me. All I had were circles. I think even a j hook would have worked.
A tip for not losing fish in the rocks, bring a trout net and do your dehooking in the trout net that way if it flops around it just falls in the net, not down in the rocks. I've dropped plenty down the rocks and that helps to keep it from happening
Thanks for the tip. I have been taking my big net that extends but that can be a pain to carry around. I don't think the lings will fit in the net but they are easier to get out of the rocks.
@@PeelingLine sorry, to clarify, not a fly fishing net but a larger freshwater landing net should have about and 18-20 inch opening. I have saved a lot of greenling from falling into the rocks with mine
@@PeelingLine I know they taste great. This year with COVID-19, the only trip that I had planned to the coast got cancelled.... Will have to try another time.
Hey great video.. How were you rigged up? Just a high and low rig with shrimp bait? Were they biting from the very bottom??? I have fished probably over 40 times at Westport (the South Jetty) last year, and caught pretty much every bottom species but never caught a Striped Sea perch!!!!!!!!! Can't wait until the bottom fishing season opens in March.
Yep you got it. Right on the bottom. This was at ocean shores. I guess they all hang out on the north side. I am looking forward to it also. I will have to try the south jetty this year.
For weights that are pretty cheap and that help prevent snags, I use the thickest pencil Lead that comes in coils, the solid, non-hollow, kind. Just cut the length you need then use those special pliers that can flatten and punch a small hole in it, just like pencil weights for the rivers, if it’s too Long of a piece then I’ll just fold it in half
@@PeelingLine the beau mac brand sells a good pair of fisherman’s pliers that has those features, it’ll last you forever with very minimal care, it’s very convenient, and the lead is very versatile too, you can attach it with a simple snap that’ll give away before your line does, or tie it on a weaker line, great for snaggy fishing. You can find it all at sportco in fife, sportsman’s warehouse, outdoor emporium and etc. good luck with it.
@@HATINTHEKAT Thanks. I will definitely check it out. I just broke my pliers the other day closing the eye on a hook. The steel (if you can call it that) snapped right behind the hinge. They only lasted 4 months.
@@PeelingLine wow that’s crazy I haven’t been that unlucky to have that happen before, I just use budget Walmart or Home Depot pliers that you grab out of the cardboard boxes on the shelf lol, still going strong haha, all they need is some grease worked into them and they loosen up and work pretty well for the most part, can’t justify buying $40 fishing pliers lol
@@HATINTHEKAT They were the more expensive pliers (offshore angler) at walmart. Ironically I have a pair of the ozark pliers and they're not the best but they haven't broken. I just picked up those pliers from sportsmans warehouse today.
Those stripes perch are beautiful and they have some girth. I liked they rifle casing sinker you were using. Pretty ingenious. Nice catch and cook as always Brett.
Great job! Good fishing! Nice job on filleting them. I didnt think anyone still fished for these that much. I caught the state registered record back in 1983 when I was 13. I caught over 500 fish to meet the states minumum requirement of 2 lbs. The fish I caught weighed 2lbs 1 oz. It held for over 30 plus years till someone beat it from that same area you fished. My hats off to the fisherman that beat me! Keep casting and maybe you will beat him! Lol! Good luck! And keep casting!
