The nests are amazing hanging from the branches. So pretty.
    And baldies are my favorites.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Do they mate in the nest or do they go outside their colony? Do you release the queens so they can make new nests ?

@ivoryjohnson4662 - Thanks for your comment. Research indicates that Baldfaced Hornet reproductives (males and new unmated queens) are born in the nest late in the life cycle of the nest, then leave the nest to go on mating flights to mate with wasps from other colonies. The new queens evidently give off a chemical attractant that alerts the males she is ready to mate and they eventually find her. Once mated, she'll find a place to hibernate over winter, then start her own nest in the following spring. The original queen in the nest dies at the end of the season as do the males and workers. Only the new queens survive to hibernate. When we collect Baldfaced Hornets for Venom Immunotherapy (VIT), we collect all the adult wasps on the nest including the queens. Then we incubate the brood combs to allow the pupating wasps to hatch out as adults and they are also collected for VIT. There are always some that are not collected during nest removals. Some of these surely survive to mate, others die off without the nest to support them.

@ivoryjohnson4662 - It's a pleasure sharing wasp knowledge with interested viewers! The great thing about knowledge sharing on any given subject, is that now you can share everything you learn with others, and they can share with many others, and so on. With enough focus and effort, modern humans from any background or social class can now use the internet to gain PhD level knowledge on virtually any subject that interests them. In the old days, only relatively wealthy people with university educations could ever have access to such high levels of knowledge. Those days are gone forever. Your ability to gain human knowledge is now limited only by your own choices. Keep learning!
