Most of the ruins on Halo rings are actually for humans when they were housed on the rings during the war between the Forerunners and the Flood, as a sort of temporary housing for sentient species while the Librarian and the Lifeworkers worked to index them to reseed the galaxy after the firing of the Halo arrays. The Anniversary versions of Halo 1-2 do add a little more lore fluff to go through with the hidden consoles and data entry stuff but really you do have to read some of the books to get an idea of it. EDIT: Yea, IIRC the narrative direction of both Halo 2 and Halo 3 changed WILDLY during development so that's why there's some inconsistency in both 2 and 3. Lore-wise they do touch on it in Halo 3 where Guilty Spark says they need to fire only the new installation 04 to cleanse the LOCAL outbreak of flood from High Charity, but firing one ring will put ALL of them on standby mode to fire WITHOUT the need for a firing index to be retrieved properly on each individual halo ring (aka the library mission from Halo 1) so Truth would be able to use that one console at the Ark to get what he wants without having to send strike teams to go through the libraries of the other 5 halo installations and fire each one manually that way.
I hope you show her all the Halo 3 promos and ads they did. The live action stuff and everything. Including the trailer with master chief walking out of the sand storm with that gorgeous music! Because, to this day, I haven't seen a video game go all out with their advertising campaign quite like Halo 3.

I doubt the validity of this as from what I can tell Truth did genuinely believe in the 'great journey' as its alluded that the 'great journey' is a religious idolized interpretation of a message left by one of the didacts on the ark, talking about how after the arrays fire, he would go on a great journey across the galaxy to reseed life (basically saying how he is going to undertake a massive project requiring lots of travel, which got localized into becoming a heavenly being)
Regarding the halo firing mechanism and Truth going for the Ark: The knowns are that in halo:CE guilty spark speaks of the limited range of installation 04, but suggests that when one fires the others will follow afterwards.
