    Beautiful scenery! I just love how Iwan calls Frankie "sausage dog." Quite a temperature change from the summer. Always something to do when you are homesteading. One thing about the cold weather after working outside is you have a great appetite. Take Care !

    The bonus of burning wood is that it tends to warm you a few times before you burn it. Stack it, cut it, move it then burn it 😉

    Right there tis the reason why I will not be ending my days in the UK. Tshirt weather in January, that is unlikely to happen here even in Cornwall until at least May. Rather have cold nights and warm days, than months of wet and cold.
    Oh an that small stove is fab, love the lift up cover and hot plate, Nick did you proud. I think I will go for a full woodburning stove with pven.

      Iwan really wanted an Aga? Style oven but the room is a bit small for one haha.
      Winter here is why we’re here, this compared to a Welsh winter is heavenly!

      First visited Cornwall (St Mawes) one New Year decades ago and couldn’t believe the now warm it was, and had to strip down to T shirt. Was there last month, and enjoyed a few T shirt days of weather. Obviously not Portuguese weather, mind.

    We have a group of wild boars who roam around our house in the night and plow the rock-hard ground seemingly effortlessly. In order to actually have a garden we experimented with a raised bed made from corrugated steel. It is 80cm high and did the trick! They didn't even get the strawberries (although the ants did.) I hope you don't have to go this route, as it is a huge amount of work just setting up the beds and filling them with logs, branches, leaves, compost, etc. Your dogs will help keep the boars away, though. We babysat our daughter's Lhasa Apso one year and all that little 8kg dog had to do was bark and 300kg of boar would stampede away! 🤣

    Great filming of the atmosphere and feel of a frosty morning ☺ careful having boar on your land if they find your veg patches they will eat it all, very dangerous animals and could attack your pets, frankie has the right attitude to not like them, the camera on frankie was fun 😁 oooooo a mid week video l've missed those :)

      The boar dig all over our land, but never go near anywhere we 'live' or garden, we pee round the boundary, which helps and the smell of dogs, etc... 🐗🌱🍄😍

    Well, the log splitter will certainly take care of large logs. I rented one once to split up about 2 cords of maple logs. It was fun. Stacking was less fun. It's interesting to see the frost in Portugal. Here in N.S. 🇨🇦 we are still having warmer temps. No snow. None forecast in the near future. This is the first time I've seen January like this. Weird. I can't wait to see your 2023 projects.🙂👍👍🥂🇨🇦❤

    Olive tree makes a difference, with the chickens keeps an eye on the amount of ground they use, as the nitrogen rich droppings will attract nettles!.. also watch for foxes, harras or site fence panels work really well as foxes struggle to get over them.. just trying to save heart ache down the line! been there done that, foxes will case out a chicken run, and go in night or day!.. love what your doing! and so jealous..

    • @FrankieOffGrid
      @FrankieOffGrid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      We’d actually love some nettles so fingers crossed for that 😅 the enclosure is separate from the run and coop, and pretty well secured - we’ll no doubt lose one or two along the way. Hopefully Frankie scares the foxes off ☺️

    Sunshine is such a moral booster! The log splitter is a great addition. I agree that filling the concrete block area with mulch, tree branches and garden waste at the bottom then working on it becoming a raised bed is a great idea. You need an area with deep rich soil for vegetables like potatoes, carrots, beets, turnips, rutabagers with other things with swallow roots mixed in. Maybe a good application for square foot gardening.

  • @Skooty68
    @Skooty68 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Oooh i wouldn't be knocking that water butt down,unless it was in the way...i'd turn that into a nice raised veggie bed,or a salad bed...Heugel culture way....filled with nice lettuce, 4 or 5 varieties at least...radish,spring onions,a4 or 5 cherry toms along the back in red and yellow,a couple of rows of sweet baby carrots like chantenay or Little Finger.....just fill it with cut branches,,leaves,straw,manure etc,then 12 inches of compost on top....Less work...more fresh food :o) Allez Allez Allez

    • @FrankieOffGrid
      @FrankieOffGrid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s definitely in the way 😅 and a bit too close to the well for comfort really - we’ll rebuild one in a better spot we think. We’re going to add some raised beds soon - with that method - love your suggestion for planting one up though.

    I'm tempted to date when you filmed the moon at 20:52 because I think it also maybe had Jupiter alongside - so 29th Dec looked likely ... but it might have been Mars when the full moon passed it on 3rd January ...

    Lovely vlog 😊. Could you perhaps leave 2 or 3 bricks or clean rocks of similar mass to heat on your wood burner and/or oven when it's not being used for cooking that you can carry in a metal bucket or such to your cabin and set it on something not flammable like a wide terracotta dish? I'm thinking the bucket of bricks/rocks could give off some initial warmth in the cabin when you're settling in to sleep. When you have a permitted 🔥, maybe u can use that to start heating your bricks/rocks, then move them to your wood burner or oven to retain heat, then off with you (it shouldn't be unattended) to the cabin? If you bucket or container had a cover, like an old tin pie plate or recyclable aluminum tray, it might retain its heat longer? Just a thought. 🤞🏼

Your land is so inviting and friendly looking. I really must look back to your early gids and make my way through them. That is what I am currently doing with Nick and Andrea's. Hi guys, Happy New Year to yous both. The log splitter is great, nice inventive style. The well is looking much better. The bike/ dog cam is great, the bike one was surprisingly steady, audio not good but that's usually the way. Here it's 17, cooler,windy,thunder,lightning and heavy rain. I have slow drains, they are too small to cope with a heavy down pour. Everything has been washed down by the rain as the plants trees were so sandy. I love the greenessof this time of the year. Dislike the cold though. I'm layering at the min, socks,cardigan and scarf. I've even got an extra blanket on the bed. I may buy a duvet. The down sleeping bags are very good, I had a down feather gillit I wore at home kept me very warm, could do with it now.....
    Any how the olive tree looks a lot better, keep taking the top out, cut down to a manageable height. You will get some lovely olives this year. Lovely to see your place,jobs getting done, your busy like Nick. Stay safe and warm, I miss my log burner we always had the kettle on to warm for a brew. Thanks for sharing.
