Interesting look into the heart and style of a great talent. Dice is a Year of the Rooster with Mars conjunct his sun -- he basically IS a troublemaker, and not merely acting like one. He is a divine troublemaker who reveals the hypocrisy in our American sexual mores while shishkebobbing those uncomfortable with the truth of their own drives -- a very Libran social perspective, served in a socially satirical New York Italian thuggish crude yet paradoxically suave and stylish manner. He is so uncool he's cool. In his powerfully self-confident act, he raises the Italian New York swagger to a higher art form -- part parody, part homage. Moreover, he doesn't just tell dirty jokes, he reveals repressed truths -- hence the huge audience reaction of both love and at times fear and hatred towards him. In this sense, he reminds me of the genius of the cartoonist R. Crumb his satircal power to reveal the repressed attitudes towards towards American sexuality -- we pretend to be offended yet we are deeply fascinated by what's under the rock he turns over -- or, better yet, hurls into our face with a hearty eeeyuh!

I have a true story about Andrew Dice Clay. When I was a student at UCLA ('86-'90), living on Gayley Avenue, a night scene from "The Adventures of Ford Fairlane" was being filmed at a nearby fraternity house. My roommate and I went down the street one late night to look for Dice Clay. We found him standing near the set, alone, in his costume so we walked over to him. My roommate asked him if he had a cigarette. He gives him a look, mumbles "Sure, kid." He gets out his pack of cigarettes, opens it up and... it was the last cigarette in the pack. He gives my roommate a look like, "You're fucking killing me." Then he gave him the cigarette. True story. I'm almost sure Dice lit the cigarette for him, too, but I won't swear to that.

All these people talking negative about Andrew are ridiculous. When did you ever sell out a stadium? He plays a over the top funny character sorry if you take it serious. I respect the fact that he was the very first person to publicly talk the most ridiculous shit and no matter what tv shows were shutting him off he still didn't sell out. Much respect to the Diceman.

Dice was in an episode of M*A*S*H when he was real young.
The story I read was he wanted to be an actor, so he landed a bit part in some shit, B movie and the characters name we Dice something, or something Dice. I don't remember exactly. It's been years ago since I read it. But when acting wasn't planning out and he decided to go into comedy, he took that name for himself.

There seems to be something of a consensus among the other comics that he "became" Dice after a while. I don't know how true that is since he's super mellow in every interview I've seen of him from the last 10 years or so. Maybe the line is kind of blurred, like how Larry David plays plays an exaggerated and more aggressive version of himself.

Something I've noticed is that some comedians develop this persona and get famous with it, and are then totally unable to break character . The most obvious example is larry the ccable guy, but also dice, gilbert gottfried. All these people are unable to speak with their real voices in public.

I only found out about him when ch4 was doing a 100 greatest stand ups and I think he was like number 95 or something n they only played a few minutes clip of him. im sure he was huge at the time but I cud tell just from them few minutes that the comedy was quite dated. saying that I have seen interviews with him n he is pretty funny when he's spontaneous.

Chris Kouyoumjan I think you hit the nail on the head,it wasn't cause it was a simpler time,it was because you were 14 years old, when you grow up a bit and you see comedians with razor sharp commentary on relationships, religion, etc etc etc then you can't take Dice serious as a comedian, he's an utter fuckin buffoon, and that might be the joke, but the fact he became the character, I mean, grow up or have the balls and creativity to let it go,he can't because he wants to be Dice Clay.

All this shade on Andrew and misunderstanding who he was. Now the truth comes out and I wonder if these momo's apologized. That's why people like Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Cobert, Trevor Noah, and Jim Jeffries turn into hacks. Maybe in the future I'll reflect on this comment, but Louis C.K. ran his mouth about Bradley Cooper when he was still a student in NYU, yet to my knowledge never apologized for how wrong he was. You don't want to be typecast for sure. But wtf is this "left leaning" and "smart?" LOL Yeah. OK. Firstly this idea of intelligence? What do you you mean by intelligence? Intelligence is limited and temporary. Someone who was considered smart 50 years ago, isn't so smart today so let's be clear on intelligence. Anyone who plays the left/right game of politics isn't very smart to begin with. Of course these guys get tired of their act before the crowd does and Dice has been openly clear about this by saying so. I've seen Dice rip people apart for asking for the nursery rhymes. Dice would tell you himself, he'd not go to watch himself. He's a very aware of himself, comedian. He openly disgusts his own character for being so obscene. He's very aware.
