Hey honestly, don't worry about "where you'll end up". You'll get there dude. Just keep making films, promote them and overall, don't stop making films. This guy is successful because he makes great films. Make great films too and you'll get there. I would love to see this film man. Let me hear your logline.
Hard Eight is underrated, well-acted, has a fun story, and has great dialogue. Boogie Nights is his best movie, has an all-star cast, and has a story of it's own. Magnolia is an epic with great acting all-around, with strong emotion. Punch-Drunk Love is Sandler's best work, is short and sweet, and is underrated too. There will be Blood is a modern-day masterpiece with Daniel Day-Lewis giving his best performance. Watch his movies. You won't regret it.
well, i made my first short film in january of this year. i'm currently editing the movie. i don't know where it will take me. it still seems pretty hard to ever be as successful as this guy.
For everyone that thinks P.T.A. is on coke is completely wrong. If he were on drugs we would know about it. He either would've probably had an overdose by now, been in rehab, or a lot of worse things. HE IS NOT ON COKE, OR ANY DRUG. He is just a GENIUS!!! Now everyone who thinks he is on Drugs is wrong, so leave P.T.A. alone
Just start making them. You don't need a load of money. For example, the film 'Primer' was made for $7000 and it's a really good movie, and got a lot of attention.
He needs to work more. I think he is above and away the best writer/director of his generation, but he just doesn't make enough movies. Just imagine a world with a p.t. anderson picture every year!
Maybe it will be less difficult now because I would say There Will Be Blood was his most ambitious and least commercial film and it actually made quite a bit of money.
Film School is like Cologne. Not in the sense that it will make you smell better, but in the sense of a confidence booster. Before i go out on a date i take a nice long hot shower and scrub my body down as if im about to perform open heart surgery. I know i dont smell bad, but i still put on cologne just to make sure that i do smell good and help me from constantly thinking if i am smelling bad the rest of the night. Get what im saying? if you need the Cologne(School) use it if not then dont!
That's not how drug addiction works. Some people go on for years and years never ODing or going to rehab or anything like that. I don't think he is on drugs NOW but from this period up through the release of Magnolia I think it's pretty clear.
not really.. the interviewer seems like he has a way of getting people to open up. if you have a problem with people making themselves vulnerable then ... i dont know. he does say some awesome stuff here and its endearing to see him yacked out. or just excited.. cant tell which.
He probably wants to but it is pretty hard to finance films in general. Let alone make his marvelous and ambitious visions. We should be glad he is able to make them in the first place. So yeah I wish he made more but we are not in the golden age of Hollywood. Marvelous and ambitious stories are not commercial hot spots for corporations
Watching PTA's movies, I expected to see a pretentious guy who takes himself too seriously. However after watching this interview, This guy could be my older brother. And the pizza is brilliant...
Plus stylistically they're different. Everybody should know that PTA is not on the same wavelength as Kubrick. And yes I agree that PTA would admit this as he was heavily influenced by Kubrick's fimmaking style like many other great directors. Also in my opinion Kubrick wasn't that prolific in terms of his body of work. He only made twelve films. That said with such a director as Kubrick I think the reason for this is because with his films it's more about quality and less about quantity
@migol1984 that can be quite frustrating. You're anywhere between 20-30 and you're like..."The guy who wrote and directed my favourite movie was 27 at the time :o"
I just saw it. Here are some things I have to say: Fix the audio(background music is much louder than dialogue),what the fuck is the movie about? I need to at least identify the main theme in the trailer. I know she wants to leave the city she's in, but is that all? What will she do there? Be a hooker? Be an actress?Be a model? The filming is one thing I actually liked though. I'll be sure to check out your film when it comes out.I'd really like to see it.When should you be finished with it?
Whether he's coked out or not, he is a genius and everyone needs to just watch a fucking interview without making it such a big deal. Listen to the man and move on with your life.
I do like his movie's. He was just dissmissive of certain genre and movies. but it wasnt just that he just seemed arrogant in this interview, a bit too sure of himself. again I like his movies, but he just comes across as slightly hyper here thats all. didnt mean to offend you
You don't need lots of money. Get a camera and shoot. Been a director isn't about getting a great film made and be famous. Is just about been a director. Direct anything that you can and suddenly you'll become a director without just know it. You'll refine your chops.
Wouldn't say arrogance, just passionate. I'm not a big fan of his movies. Only Kill Bill(vol. 1). Pulp Fiction is not that great, and Reservoir Dogs is a copy of John Woo's A Better Tomorrow part 2.
This is the greatest interview I've ever seen! He's so laid-back, honest, open, funny and passionate. The man!
I could listen to Paul talk ALL DAY..... He should have his own Radio show or something
Hypnotic.. could watch him talk forever.
I'm a huge, HUGE fan of Paul Thomas Anderson.
this guy is hilarious. love it

I love his passion for film and his knowledge of it.
Hard Eight is underrated, well-acted, has a fun story, and has great dialogue.
Boogie Nights is his best movie, has an all-star cast, and has a story of it's own.

"Get your pizza, man!"
He is just high on life. And its fucking beautiful
my god i love him.hes my ideal man..
"How does Forrest Gump have sex?" hahaha
how crazy is it?? he finishes eating it at 1.15, great bit
Eating pizza, drinking coke, and talking about porn...
AMAZINGLY EPIC!
It's 12:33 am, it's a school night and instead of sleeping I'm watching Paul Thomas Anderson talk about pornography. Awesome!
"there are a lot of me save me moments...." I bet he got the idea for magnolia at that exact moment
This guy's fuckin awesome. His movies are epic.
Paul Thomas Anderson tells it like it is.
I would've liked to see that scene in the movie.
The DVD release is his version. It's just not called Sydney.
well, i made my first short film in january of this year. i'm currently editing the movie. i don't know where it will take me. it still seems pretty hard to ever be as successful as this guy.
get your pizza, man
He's so fuckin' cool. And he's devouring that pizza!
Oh and a trailer for a short film? That's an interesting thing to do,man.
This man is an AWESOME Director! But is he off about the time frame for Boogie Nights? I thought it came out in or around January of 1997?
i would fucking love to meet this guy
every time i watch this video , i eat pizza
pta enthusiasm is the reason i guess
nobody is untouchable

Ya think he wants a milkshake with that pizza?
They're talking about Pedro Almodovar. Go watch Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! if you want to know what they're talking about.
I have a mancrush on him
He needs to work more. I think he is above and away the best writer/director of his generation, but he just doesn't make enough movies. Just imagine a world with a p.t. anderson picture every year!

You're right. I don't see the arrogance. It reminds me of the same passion Tarantino shows when he talks about his movies.
Audio out of sync or is it just my crappy firefox?
And this guy made There Will be Blood...
who eats pizza and discusses porn for an interview? an amazing human.
That was a big pizza bite!
That's not how drug addiction works. Some people go on for years and years never ODing or going to rehab or anything like that. I don't think he is on drugs NOW but from this period up through the release of Magnolia I think it's pretty clear.

Amazing director. There Will Be Blood is his best work. Boogie Nights too.
Damn... you got me :/
I see a lot of arrogance in Tarantino when he talks. PTA comes off as much more genuine.
"Not even good mono" lol
Watching PTA's movies, I expected to see a pretentious guy who takes himself too seriously. However after watching this interview, This guy could be my older brother. And the pizza is brilliant...
Is that what people pick fights about on you tube now a days ?
Yep, I know.
Plus stylistically they're different. Everybody should know that PTA is not on the same wavelength as Kubrick. whats he holding in his non pizza hand?
@migol1984 that can be quite frustrating. You're anywhere between 20-30 and you're like..."The guy who wrote and directed my favourite movie was 27 at the time :o"
haha dude i bet he's so stoned in this interview
I just saw it. Here are some things I have to say: Fix the audio(background music is much louder than dialogue),what the fuck is the movie about? Pta said film school is a waste of time, maybe he was right ;)
I wonder if he has seen ' Shame ' which is an art porno film. A great art porn film.
pta straight up hatin' on fuji
I don't see how I was trying to pick a fight, but if you wanna interpret it in that way, go ahead.
Funny cos they're also both more expensive than they need to be.
Whether he's coked out or not, he is a genius and everyone needs to just watch a fucking interview without making it such a big deal. Listen to the man and move on with your life.
Which is a book, I'm sure you're aware.
That's how it's pronounced
you can check out the trailer to my upcoming short "Out Cognito" its on my page
I do like his movie's. He was just dissmissive of certain genre and movies. but it wasnt just that he just seemed arrogant in this interview, a bit too sure of himself. again I like his movies, but he just comes across as slightly hyper here thats all. didnt mean to offend you
I don't get the buzz. What's so arrogant about this guy, he's just so invested in analyzing and comprehending stuff around him.
You don't need lots of money. Get a camera and shoot. Been a director isn't about getting a great film made and be famous. Is just about been a director. Direct anything that you can and suddenly you'll become a director without just know it. You'll refine your chops.
Why is he pronouncing Cannes like "can". Whatever, he's awesome.
go get it or go home.
He does, but I still prefer PTA. I just don't care of Kubrick's characters and stories. Except for A Clockwork Orange.
@dan564891 Its impossible not to love this guy, seriously, no homo lol
Dude, start working then. I know you wrote this comment 1 year ago but come on, it's not too late.
really? it's called mystique.
While still being a nice, unpretentious guy
No way man, he is on hella coke here, watch his interviews nowadays he has no energy anymore, the kind of energy here isn't just youth it's drugs
Forrest Gump is a great character!?
PTA suddenly seems less of a genius.
So out of synch
Wouldn't say arrogance, just passionate. I'm not a big fan of his movies. Only Kill Bill(vol. 1). Pulp Fiction is not that great, and Reservoir Dogs is a copy of John Woo's A Better Tomorrow part 2.
COCAINE
