I'll stand by my initial opinion that "CODA" won not because folks thought it should've, but because they didn't want to award "Power of the Dog" beyond Director. "Worst Person in the World" or "Tick Tick Boom" should've been contenders to win; the fact that neither were even nominated for Picture is an even greater sin.
CODA was also the only other Best Picture nominee that year directed by a woman, and if they weren't going to give it to The Power of the Dog that year, it was the only other option (I wouldn't be surprised if that's the way they were thinking that year)...
For the acting categories: Best Actress 2021: Who won - Frances McDormand for Nomadland Who should’ve won - Carey Mulligan for Promising Young Woman Best Actor 2022: Who won - Will Smith for King Richard Who should’ve won - Andrew Garfield for Tick Tick Boom Best Supporting Actress 2023: Who won - Jamie Lee Curtis for Everything Everywhere All At Once Who should’ve won - Kerry Condon for The Banshees of Inisherin Other categories: Best Picture 2021: What won - Nomadland What should’ve won - Minari or Sound of Metal Best Original Score 2023: What won - All Quiet on the Western Front What should’ve won and should’ve been nominated- The Batman or Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio
Agree on the most part, but i do think stephanie hsu is slightly better than Kerry condon, and also judas and the black messiah should have won best picture
Encanto's Oscar win was validated. That film was awesome and its thought-provoking generational subtext and songs are still relevant and slaps to this day and also all of the animated films nominated that year were very much deserving to win. Its just sucks that they will only choose one but that's how it is in Award shows only 1 will win. ☺️☺️
Not only did All Quiet win over Babylon, but I could think of at least 5 or 6 scores that were far better and weren't even nominated that year: The Batman, Guillermo del Toro's Pinnoccio, Pearl, Glass Onion... Even if they didn't want to award Babylon or any of these other films, they could've at least given the award to John Williams, who is long due an Oscar win, at that way The Fablemans wouldn't have gone empty handed...
i'm so with you with these picks. also the second babylon lost in best score my brain melted and i screamed and yelled and had depression the next week.
I wish Kerry Condon won for The Banshees of Inisherin over Jamie Lee Curtis I wish Colin Farrell won for The Banshees of Inisherin over Brendan Fraser I wish Vanessa Kirby won for Pieces of a Woman over Frances McDormand
NGL, I'm more mad at Encanto winning Best animated film than anything else you mentioned (Yes, even the All quiet score winning, although I would've still voted for Babylon, which had the better score)
IMO i still feel like power of the dog winning wouldn't have been met with that much of better reception. The audience reception on that movie is even worse, and it'll reinforce some beliefs of the academy going with super serious auteur cinema that no one likes. Thats why stuff like green book won over Roma. POTD is at 6.8 on imdb and 3.7 on letterboxd, with CODA being at 8 imdb and 3.9 letterboxd
@@FrakkinToasterLuvvaSo how would you merit audience reception? I mean personally you can love a movie, but I'm trying to gauge the audience reception. I mean even with letterboxd as well, it isn't necessarily loved by the audiences. Don't think there is any fans of anything downvoting potd, people just didn't like the movie as much as critics.
“Coda”and “Nomadland”winning Best Picture didn’t really age too well but “Everything, Everywhere, All At Once” and “Oppenheimer” were both great BP choices. So it’s a 50/50 for me for Best Picture winners so far.
All Quiet won that score because as a popular foreign language movie, the foreign and older Academy members usually blindly vote for certain movies in the categories that they watched fully, I'm willing to bet you that most of the older members did not even watch Babylon after the first 10 minutes after that unnecessary scene with the elephant ****, so they never got to hear that score. I remember watching Babylon in the theatre in LA and saw at least half a dozen walkouts after that scene.
CODA winning in a year like 2021 wouldn't have been as outrageous as it was it winning over a great oscar lineup as was 2022. IMO, CODA winning over Dune will go down in history as one of the greatest crimes against cinema the Academy has ever committed😂 Hopefully they don't make the same mistake again this year with Dune Part 2...
@@calebisdisposable I realize that. I meant top 10 of this decade so far. I figured that was pretty self explanatory since that’s exactly what he did in the video with his 10 least favorites.
god stephanie hsu was RIGHT THEREEEEE. she was arguably the most important character in that movie's plot and yet,, the big actress cameo won over her. what a slap in the face to one of the best performances in recent memory
I actually loved Nomadland, though I've only watched it one time. I found it beautiful and it moved me to tears, FM was excellent, but she could have done that performance in her sleep and still get nominated. I absolutely wanted Mulligan to win, not only is her character in Promising Young Woman so complex and original, but Mulligan rides those tonal waves flawlessly. It's truly one of the best written characters to be put to screen ever, she owns the entire film and it and she sticks with you long after it's over.
The way I feel about all quiet winning score over Babylon is sorta like if Sam Mendes had beat bong joon ho for best director. I fuckin LOVE the Babylon score… but I’ve also listened to the all quiet score all the way through and fuck it! it’s phenomenal! Go and cry about it!

I still don’t get Jamie winning. In my personal opinion I liked the sound of Angela Bassett becoming an academy award recipient but for a marvel movie and a mid one at that. But that’s the problem with the Oscars it’s almost never about the performance. Also let’s not do Frances Mcdormand that I love that lady.

Jamie Lee Curtis truly deserved that for her character going in different directions with most especially her as a “lesbian” with the long fingers of being different. The daughter was awesome in that film but she truly deserved it more and behind her was the actress from the Whale cuz it was a sad movie
I remember being blown away by Hong Chau in The Whale due to the reserved power in her voice during her interactions with Charlie. Given that subtle performances are rarely nominated *Zac Efron* *cough*, I knew she wouldn't win, but of all the performances to lose against that year, why was it Jamie Lee Curtis, the weakest performance in the running?
I whole heartedly agree on Babylon getting absolutely snubbed for score. 1000% better than All Quiet. Also while we're on the topic of Babylon I feel the need to mention that I genuinely think that one of the three biggest snubs at the Oscars in the past twenty years was Margot Robbie not getting nominated for actress. That is THE BEST acting performance I have seen from Robbie. Of the two people nominated in the category that I have seen (those being Michelle Williams, and Michelle Yeoh) I think Robbie was leagues better than the both of them combined. Anyway, my hot take of the day is finished.
Hate to be the outlier, but I think the All Quiet score is pretty epic, and probably the best thing about a movie that I otherwise think is well-made, but generic. I do think the Babylon score is great (even if I dislike the film as a whole), but Justin Hurwitz has two Oscars already, so I don't think there was a need to give him another one so soon.
