Trust me working in a customer service role can be very toxic at times, its the people you work with that make it so fun, so much banter and sneakiness LOL!
I could only manage 2 years as a customer service agent at an airport. I have the upmost respect for those that persist. It can be very stressful but as you said the people you work with made it enjoyable. Seriously underpaid customer service are in my humble opinion.
So I worked in retail and when I used to ask customers "hello, how are you?" And I get a response like "sorry, can you hurry up!" I would indeed hurry, not bag their stuff and scream next next next next next next next so the customer behind him/her is hoovering which makes them panic. The other thing I used to do to this type of customer is not remind them if they left something on my counter like car keys, glasses and even some of their shopping and phone. Id would just leave it there and I wouldn't care what happened to it, they usually come back running, out of breath and red faced lol
I've been working in customer service for 20 years now and this is the advice I'd give: You have to accept that you're just someone who customers have to get past in order to get their shopping and go. That's not the same as knowing that. You have to accept it. If you're an outgoing type of person who likes or insists on a rapport this is not the job for you. Customers are not your friends or someone you're meeting during a social gathering. They're only talking to you because they have to. Your only job is to serve them as quick as possible and be civil and polite as you do it. There are many personal reasons why a customer may be blunt/cold with you. Some are in a rush, some have very low self-esteems and don't like to be open, some are shy/unconfident and stiffen up to seem harder, some have horrible jobs and are worn down, some have depression and have nothing to give emotionally, some are in abusive relationships, the list goes on. Most just want to get move on to the next thing. If you're looking to be liked/feel respected or looking to be amused by conversations with customers to make your job more interesting, greatly curb your expectations. This is not to say don't try to engage with them but immediately let go if they don't. Don't take it personally if they'd rather just get on with it and f@#k off. When you do get one who is friendly and warm enjoy it while it lasts, and hold onto that knowing another will come soon, if that's something you care about. There will be many friendly customers throughout your day. Most people will be quite pleasant. Enjoy 😁. P.S. - The more offended you become by others the more unhappy you look. The next arriving customer is going to see this and is 2x more likely to treat you poorly. This can lead to you feeling victimised very quickly thinking that everyone is a twat. If one of those bully types comes along you can be assured you'll get the full treatment. Best to learn to let go and reset your attitude ✌️.

Hey man I am a British male from Pakistani decent and I am catholic. I’m so sorry for the hate that people like us get for our colour. Just hang in there my guy.
I work at sainsburys. Been there since 2017. Here is what its like. Firstly, I work twilight shift. 5pm, 1am. Right this is what happens. You wait in the warehouse until your shift manager arrives. He arrives with a piece of paper with the isle numbers. I was working ambient. Soup, biscuits, all that, non dairy food. Anyway, with the piece of paper he had the hours of work for that shift day. Could be 40 hours, 100 hours depending on the day. Then depending on the hours and how many colleagues are working that shift he will decide which isle colleagues will work. Most of the time, and this is most of the time, colleagues will be set two isles to replenish. The isles will be next to each other, isle 9, 10 you know. Anyway, for most teenagers that will start at 6pm and finish at 10pm. So, 4 hours to get the isles worked. Now, most of the time the shift manager will want colleagues to work the isles and dress them, push everything forward. That is okay when there is little work. For newbies one roll cage can seem daunting since everything is unfamiliar. You work on your own all the time. It is rare that other colleagues on your team, and let me be very clear, your team will help you. Other members from tills, bakery and other departments never help. Managers do not help you, they prance about. Only some help if they are not doing anything. On busy days, which is Thursday, well in my store. Most colleagues will be lumbered with 2 and a half roll cages. Me and enough colleague get's this every Thursday. Working at Sainsburys is not for the faint hearted, I don't want to sound dramatic, but it is very physical. There is hardly anytime to complete anything, and you run around like your heads been cut off. There is no back stock for ambient, such as beans, soups, etc, The stock for that day comes in on that day, and is expected to be put out on that day. The only back stock is crisps, cereals, beers, wines and sprits. If your are thinking about joining then do so. But be warmed it is physical and repetitive.
