I think his art would be better if its in black and white ,but his Batman Gargoyle of Gotham variant cover looks really good, and its one of the latest Miller work so what im saying he knows what hes doing.
Digital Coloring doesn't help, FM is more graphic with his shapes and I really think that also distracts from his work. Of course he's a lot older now, he's been through a lot and i'm hope he's doing well. But for me it's just age sadly, things are still there but it's graphic and geometric in shapes.
@@ComicsWithJose I do agree with you, his recent works aren't my cup of tea .Maybe he doesn't care anymore and just phoning it in. But the guy is 66-67, so I hope he's OK and just get the $$$. Normally I wouldn't say this any artist, but this is FM and I still have my memories and books of when I adored his work. Plus thanks for highlighting that Wolverine cover with the ninjas, that was an awesome cover.
I absolutely believe that Frank's work can be replicated well in color. It's just that they didn't hire a good enough color artist to do so. Look at Eduardo Risso's art in 100 bullets or Marcelo Frusin from Loveless comic. Gorgeous colors with black and white art
Aside the fact that he is kind of getting blocky the main change he did in his art is he removed all the hatching and feathering from his style. Thus is giving us a total "flat" outcome in combination with the blocky and not fluid poses. You can only see lines without variety and black spaces. Removing all those elements that give a sketch dimensions and it makes it pop out of the paper we see those results.
The style broke his brain? Hahah😅. Maybe he’s not an artist himself and can’t convey exactly what is distasteful in terms of draftsmanship? Or even aesthetically?😂😂😂
Actually, his newer art looks extremely boring, it looks like a cover for a very boring comic, also, all of them are a character in the middle of the page looking at us, which is also repetitive and boring.
@@Frustratedartist2 I don't disagree with that, but... seems like most think it's the worst and are still talking about it. I recently checked out the black and white version of that terrible DK2 book and it works way better than it does in color. Still just a shadow of his Sin City work though.
I think part of his devolution, and maybe why the quality varies so much, is the switch from traditional mediums to digital/tablet art and the struggle to adjust. That being said it certainly doesn’t excuse the fact that this stuff is getting put out there as variant covers, especially his current Wolverine drawings, honestly nothing can explain how he went from making one of the best most iconic Wolverine covers of all time to whatever the hell that is
I'm not really one to say cuz I feel my art has de-volved in some ways, though to me, some of these do look samey (like a character lunging forward, front view square fists), they remind me of Super Hero Squad. That Wolverine one is just not it, the pose is awkward and the silhouette gets quite lost with the claws in that front view, if they were out to the sides it would've helped with it
I'm not a big comics fan so don't really have the same appreciation of the history, but I kinda like the newer ones. I think the big chunky square hands and fingers and bizarre proportions are meant to be a weird stylised theme, I think it'd look a lot better if the linework was thicker in places though and maybe add a bit of depth to it.
It’s hard for me to say. Could be a number of reasons why his style has evolved to the current look. #1 I feel no one understands what he is going for and the colorists and inkers are doing it no favor #2 Age #3 Health like a stroke? Drug use? #4 Artist self indulgence and resting on him laurels? All 4? I just buy what I like, but I can’t imagine his variants flying off the shelves as most look uninspired.
He is clearly trying to channel kirby's energy on his work. His absolute batman cover it is kinda ugly but once you look at it you can tell the movement coming straight at you and the weird anatomy as a lot of kirby's work based on captain america.
I think he may also be putting better work into things he like and the other ones seems like hell they keep asking me to do covers let's see how long I can keep doing crappy covers till they stop
I agree that it’s definitely much weaker than his earlier work but I do think there’s a nugget of greatness hidden in there that he’s searching for. The recent hulk, thing, and Loki I think are really fantastic and show the potential of this style. But I gotta agree that wolverine cover is just terrible.
Comic book artist here…. I think good and bad art is a lot like music. You don’t need to necessarily sing to know when someone has a great voice, or when they are way out of tune. To point out what I’m seeing there is a clear lack of proportion balance in Frank’s newer work. Cartoonishness is not the term you would use, considering with the right proportions and angle and dynamism in poses you can make something look incredibly abstract (think anime like dandadan) and still look incredibly compelling. Frank is choosing to do a top down pose on almost all his new stuff, (which is not an appealing angle unless you are very very good at dynamism). Not only that but he is choosing to bend his characters limbs creating an unappealing box or circle shape, which is just so static and boring. On top of that he keeps choosing to foreshorten more than one limbs at a time (a big no no in art, as you’re asking for trouble once you start foreshortening more than one limb in a given pose) and by doing this is failing at creating any depth, which is exactly the purpose of foreshortening in the first place. So what happens is that you get a Superman who looks like he has donkey Kong’s arms and hands. It’s ugly, it’s unappealing, and it lacks all depth. And to make it worse he is taking all the detail out of his character’s faces and making them look like granite faced Easter island statues. What he is trying to do as opposed to what he can do is what is failing him. I don’t know if anyone has the guts to tell him to stop doing that, because he is Frank Miller. When you’re a comic book legend, no one is going to tell you to rein it in. But yea, not good stuff.
I think hes channeling Ralph Steadman. Gonzo art. Look it up if you're not familiar. And also maybe dabbling with digital format to draw? Which is not flattering to his style at all. Take a drink every time he says "cartoony".
Ronin II has his new style and that would definitely help if he drew more. But when you do only covers it really doesn't allow ppl to acclimate to the new style because this new ultra cartoony style is really different.
I think it’s a man who wants to try new things. He’s 67 for crying out loud! Let him try out a new art style if he wants! If he’s having fun then what’s the problem?!
There's no problem. As I mentioned, art is subjective. I didn't say you had to hate it. But it's not my cup of tea. His new style doesn't move my needle. Glad you like it.
@ oh no I wasn’t complaining about you and what you said in the video! Sorry if it came across as that. It was more towards people online and in the comments criticizing his current style 😅
Buddy , you repeat so much "I don't dont know" I had to mute halfway through because I wanted to keep seeing the silly pictures, but you obviously ran out of things to say.
It's not "more cartoonish", it's just bad... the guy is a legend, but he clearly can't draw anymore... I don't know what happened, but obviously something happened, probably age.
I give the art 2 👎👎. I don't know what happened to him, or his work. If you go back and look a the quality of his work on Daredevil (Initial run), the Wolverine mini-series, Ronin, and any one of the dozens of cover art he did for different books, (There's a great one from the Marvel run of the first Star Wars comics series, btw) And just about anything he's done in the past 10-20 years and there's no comparison.
Its dog$hit. sorry. love frank millers work (mostly) otherwise, including much of his art. but he has to stop. never any denying his legacy and he'll always deserve credit and respect, but he has to stop.
I think his art would be better if its in black and white ,but his Batman Gargoyle of Gotham variant cover looks really good, and its one of the latest Miller work so what im saying he knows what hes doing.
his new work looks like the knock off hero merch at the dollar store
Someone stop giving him money. His stuff has become a parody of itself at this point.
His books are getting reprinted everyday, he gonna get the money even if he stops doing cover lol.
Found the woke
His new art style looks like Simple Jack drew it.
Digital Coloring doesn't help, FM is more graphic with his shapes and I really think that also distracts from his work. I think you hit the nail on the head. His new style just lacks that finesse with shapes and blacks. It relies too much on cartooning.
@@ComicsWithJose I do agree with you, his recent works aren't my cup of tea .Maybe he doesn't care anymore and just phoning it in. But the guy is 66-67, so I hope he's OK and just get the $$$. Bro drawls like he hasn't hit puberty yet 😂
Bro, 🤣😂😅😭
I would love to have been in the room to see and hear the reaction when the new Frank Miller art pieces came in for approval.
I was shocked by many of the things you showed me here. Art is subjective, but some of this is just easy money for the guy 😂
The Deadpool Wolverine seriously looks like a 9gag/4chan thing

Say cartoony 1. More. Time.
Don't worry. He will, he's gotta stretch this 3 minute topic to 16 for that sick ad rev.
"its ummmmm.... i mean he's always been cartoony.... maybe its just more cartoony?"
The style broke his brain? Hahah😅. Maybe he’s not an artist himself and can’t convey exactly what is distasteful in terms of draftsmanship? Or even aesthetically?😂😂😂
I would of found this bad ass in 6th grade
Be the best or the worst. Just don't be boring. If people are still talking about this then something is working.
Actually, his newer art looks extremely boring, it looks like a cover for a very boring comic, also, all of them are a character in the middle of the page looking at us, which is also repetitive and boring.

I miss the old miller
JRJR and Frank Miller in cahoots of the biggest comic book industry troll ever executed.

All 4?

I don't think it is the cartoonishness its that his line work had decrease in quality
Less detail less effort. His writing is 0 effort 2😅😅😅
@ lol yeah
It's his slow decent into madness. Someone convince him to get back on his meds.
He is clearly trying to channel kirby's energy on his work. His absolute batman cover it is kinda ugly but once you look at it you can tell the movement coming straight at you and the weird anatomy as a lot of kirby's work based on captain america.
Yeah the thing cover reminded me of kirby and vince colletta, but taken too far.
You never touch his inkers tho
I think he may also be putting better work into things he like and the other ones seems like hell they keep asking me to do covers let's see how long I can keep doing crappy covers till they stop

Oh god I thought it couldn’t get worse
I don’t think some of them aren’t that bad but except for the Deadpool and Wolverine one, plus the colours is not flattering at all.
It's sad that he's trying to be like Jack Kirby

Looks like he just give a damn any more
I think hes channeling Ralph Steadman. Gonzo art. Look it up if you're not familiar. And also maybe dabbling with digital format to draw? Which is not flattering to his style at all. Take a drink every time he says "cartoony".
How old is Frank?
2 old. He was grown up in theb80s. Gott be 60s😅
I like hes new stuff but it was better if he used it on his original characters/storys
Ronin II has his new style and that would definitely help if he drew more. But when you do only covers it really doesn't allow ppl to acclimate to the new style because this new ultra cartoony style is really different.
Going full blocky is a good choice in my opinion. Going less blacks and ignoring anatomy is what makes his current art stink, at least sometimes
Is it for children?
I think we found an artist worst then Rob Liefeld and that not an easy feet 🦶 😂

I love Frank MIller! Millie'Millah is one of my top dawgz but I love this topic, cuz why not point it out. Pscyched for your vids, man, Joes -gracias
I love him too. Miller is on my top 5 for sure.

Hes brilliant, but his art is weak now. It's defo not the same..
I kinda really like the new stuff an I’m not really into his art very much
I’m gonna be real his art and written ain’t what it use to be and it’s been that way for many years now….
HORRIBLE!
Its dog$hit. sorry. love frank millers work (mostly) otherwise, including much of his art. but he has to stop. never any denying his legacy and he'll always deserve credit and respect, but he has to stop.
Trash
I love Miller’s art evolution
"Evolution" you're missing a "De" at the beginning.
De-volution😅😅😅😅
I dislike most modern comics covers anyway but I'd still take Frank Miller today over artists like Romita Jr or Cory Walker.
It's not cartoony. Most of it are just lazily drawn
