    Been maining Monk since Heavnsward.. it's the kind of job that will make you not only a better DPS but a better player. That fast GCD and weaving off GCD"S at full speed with greased lightning... if you can handle monk comfortably at that speed. your timing and ability to do rotations will also improve across any job you play. Monk makes other jobs feel slow by comparison.

      I spent the past week getting monk to 80 and suddenly found myself able to heal a lot better on astrologean and fully utilize all the ogcd abilities.
      Monk's always be punching approach makes it easier to always be doing something on other jobs

      I was the same way until I unlocked Dragon Kick earlier today, and now the rotation clicked super hard. Plus I'm still able to pay attention to the fight and not my x-hotbar. Plus I get Final Heaven as a Limit and Kurokami Phantom, I mean Phantom Rush as a Finisher, whilst taking my favorite DnD class in FFXIV. I'm absolutely loving Monk right now.

  • @Pravaification

    I will say that Monk has the most satisfying AoE rotation. Mechanically, it's not much different than any other melee AoE, but there's something about the animations and sound effects, followed by blasting enemies with an Enlightenment Hadouken that always feels great!

    • @XernuhtZwei
      @XernuhtZwei 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My only issue with the Monk AoE rotation is just how long it takes to get Four-point Fury. That gap drove me up the wall while levelling it.
      I still love the job, and I wish I'd followed my heart and started with PUG instead of ARC, but it's one of the weirdest feeling jobs to end up running pre-50 content with.

    • @Bravadorado
      @Bravadorado 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Idk how you can consider the monk aoe rotation satisfying. It's literally 123->repeat, which is the same as most other jobs, but only has one oGCD to throw in. Looking at the melee... NIN has a 12 combo, plus mudras including Katon, Goka, and Doton, which interacts with the combo. Hellfrog medium for consistent oGCDs, but also kassatsu, bunshin and phantom kaimaitachi, and tenchjin. SAM has a 1213 combo, with kyuten for consistent oGCDs, the iajutsu spender, tsubame, meikyo, ikishoten, ogi namikiri, and shoha 2. RPR has a 12 combo with grim swathe as a consistent oGCD, a debuff that gives you guage from killed enemies, a GCD gauge raiser, a GCD that combos with grim swathe, gluttony, harvest moon, and the entire enshroud combo. Finally DRG has a 123 combo, plus geirskogul, life surge, dragonfire dive, spineshatter dive, high jump, mirage dive, nastrond, stardiver, and wyrmwind thrust.
      So yeah, I guess this is sort of a rant but I really don't see how a basic 123 combo and a basic spammable oGCD are super satisfying, especially when every other melee has those two things and more.

    • @XernuhtZwei
      @XernuhtZwei 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@Bravadorado Gonna put this out there, maybe they're not past SB yet. A lot of the cool stuff you're mentioning only starts getting added in SB.
      DRG? Only starts getting its AoE combo in SB. Has to settle for a 30-sec and 2-min oGCD, and still needs to single-target to fully buff up.
      NIN? 1-2 and jutsu until SB. Doesn't get the fun stuff until 70 with TCJ.
      SAM? Same as NIN, but with a 1-3 as well.
      RPR? Can't unlock until Lv.70.
      MNK? Works the exact same as its single-target rotation, complete with big hits from Masterful Blitz and oGCD weaving from Howling Fist.

    • @Bravadorado
      @Bravadorado 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@XernuhtZwei that's a good point, though I think ninjas mudras still make it more interesting than monk at low levels probably. But yeah, fair enough. At 90, I think monks aoe rotation is definitely the least interesting of the melee, and imo, even the tanks have more interesting ones (excluding GNB probably). I don't play ranged or caster enough to compare those though.

    • @XernuhtZwei
      @XernuhtZwei 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Bravadorado I get it. The system they built for the mudras is neat. It lends itself to a very DRK-like opening burst (my main among mains, btw) where you spend it all right away for a huge burst, but I feel like I need TCJ to really scratch the burst output itch that MNK delivers a whole expac earlier through Perfect Balance and Masterful Blitz.

  • @kadomi
    @kadomi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    I recently leveled to 90. Loved the aesthetics, the look of the abilities. AoE rotation was perfect. But single-target made my brain melt. I would literally freeze up, trying to figure out where I was in the rotation. So I think I am with you, and think I'll be better off playing RPR or SAM.

  • @hennyzhi2261
    @hennyzhi2261 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    One of the other downsides, or strengths if you prefer it like me, is that as your leveling the speed at which you do things also increases. It's a job where you really want to practice the golden ration of 2-2-3 and know it by heart. When I was using the job exclusively through modern Stormblood I would practice that rotation, absent all other procs, until I couldn't drop it after many rotations. And arguably you'd want to practice it for longer without dropping it while also doing all the little things like riddle of earth or getting used to switching gears into Blitz rotations at 70 (alongside the insanely fun ability to move into any form at will with perfect balance). I'm hoping to god they don't simplify Dragoon too much, but I'm also thankful Monk is at this place in the game right now. I love how rewarding it feels to have all that muscle memory and raw flexibility pay off.

    something that might help monk is setting up the hotbar. I have all my Oppo-Oppo form buttons on 1, raptor on 2, and coerl on 3 stacked on top of each other. Bottom hotbar is standard combo (Bootshine, True Strike, Snap Punch), second row is buffs (Dragon Kick, Twin Snakes, Demolish), and third row is AOE. Dragon kick and twin strike every other combo and end with demolish every third combo. because of how I have my hotbar set up, it's just a question of "do I hold shift here or next combo?" instead of trying to scour my hotbar for every button
    Just some advice I wanted to pass out since I set up an extra hotbar just for monk and it has helped me a lot

    Pugilist/Monk is the first class I'm playing as a beginner to ffxiv and I feel like it's done a great job of preparing me for what ffxiv is all about. There's a lot to keep track of but the progression does a decent job of introducing you to each new ability slowly and there are lots of good videos out there that will teach you how to do it correctly. It has been intimidating especially for a controller player but it's not impossible and it's very satisfying when you get the hang of your rotations! I'm far from there yet but the journey is great 😃

I only enjoy some jobs because of shiny shiny glow, but MNK just feels reaaaally good to play, specially for someone like me who came from fighting games too. (Other jobs that I enjoy without shiny shiny is dragoon, reaper and sage. I can live and play them without getting glams because they by themselves feels good to play already.)

  • @user-gw1fm9bt9o
    @user-gw1fm9bt9o 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Monk is definitely a class that’s hard to pick up, super easy to play at a mediocre level, and hard to master.
    The biggest difficulty with starting monk once you’re used to another class is the fluidity of the rotation and buff tracking. It’s unlike any other class that has a rigid rotation, and demands that you simultaneously keep track of 3 separate buffs/debuffs with very short timers.
    Once you get down the basics of the 2-2-3 sequence, it’s really simple to understand conceptually, and just comes down to “if no leaden fist, then refresh” and “if twin snakes / demolish timer < 6 seconds, then refresh.”
    Once you get the braindead rotation down, it then becomes very difficult to master when you have to learn the Optimal Drift rotation and the 9 different possible ways to enter your 2 minute reopener, and which fight specific opener to use.

    Also this intro gave the chills. Thanks for giving Mnk a shot. Love your presentations as always!
    I can get the criticism about short timers tho. If there's tips I can offer:
    In HUD, set your Enhancements / Conditional Enhancements (if chose to separate) and Boss status effects with its Health and Cast Bar close to the other, maybe above the Boss Status Effects.
    This can help you can track Leaden Fist, Disciplined Fist and Demolish in one place, while paying attention to what the boss is doing.

      I honestly feel for you there. It's a very demanding job up front, but the cool thing is that once you get the bare essentials down with that 6 action rotation and later on the Blitz stuff it's smooth sailing going forward. They even give you considerable gaps in the second half of leveling where you'll rarely get any new actions and I partly think that's because it's meant to be time to train muscle memory with the core things that get built upon from the very start.

    • @CivilChev
      @CivilChev 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@hennyzhi2261 I don't play MNK but that makes a lot of sense. Street Fighter is a 6 button game and everything you do in the game is a combination of pressing these six buttons with a direction (or multiple) so MNK having a rotation revolving around pressing six buttons in a certain order is very much like playing Street Fighter.

No game ever will come close to the deep and amazing gameplay of real fighting games like Tekken, street fighter, king of fighters or Guilty Gear. The combos of those games need real muscle memory unlike in FF14 where you have 1,8 - 2 secs before using the next move and not 0,2 secs or a bit more

      It does kinda fit though. I mean, when you're strong enough you can actually punch someone hard enough to cause internal bleeding, and Demolish is basically that, but on multiple places of the body at a time(presumably, since you hit like 7 times). It is something people fighting bare handed would do IRL unintentionally, Martial Artist or not, those guys just hone it so that they hit specific parts to do the most damage and wear opponents out better. And funnily enough, it isn't made for the idea of the Monk, but rather the Pugilist as it is taught through the class mentor and is said to be his "trump card" and "hardest technique" he would use on the Arena.
